NCAA Basketball – Pat Summitt, winningest coach in D1 history, has died at 64
Pat Summitt, the winningest coach in Division I college basketball history who helped boost the women’s game to the big time in a 38-year career at Tennessee, has died at 64. With an icy glare on the sidelines, Summitt led the Lady Vols to eight national championships and prominence on a campus steeped in the traditions of the football-rich south until she retired in 2012. Her son, Tyler Summitt, issued a statement Tuesday morning saying his mother died peacefully at Sherrill Hill Senior Living in Knoxville surrounded by those who loved her most. Tyler’s statement said “since 2011, my mother has battled her toughest opponent, early onset dementia, `Alzheimer’s Type’… and we can all find peace in knowing she no longer carries the heavy burden of this disease. “

Cubs 11, Reds 8 – Kris Bryant hits 3 homers as Cubs, Arrieta beat Reds 11-8
Kris Bryant became the first major leaguer to hit three homers and two doubles in a game, and Jake Arrieta added a solo shot in the ballpark where he threw a no-hitter in April, leading the Chicago Cubs to an 11-8 victory over the Cincinnati Reds on Monday night. The Cubs pulled out of their 1-6 slide behind a tandem that’s had some historic moments in Cincinnati. Arrieta (12-2) threw his second career no-hitter on April 21 during a 16-0 win over the Reds. Bryant led the way with a pair of homers in that game, including a grand slam that gave him a career-high six RBIs. Arrieta struggled in his return to Cincinnati, giving up a season-high five runs in five innings, but Bryant drove in six runs again to help the right-hander pull through. Bryant’s 16 total bases were a Cubs record, and his five hits marked a career high.

MLB – Cubs’ Bryant becomes first with 3 homers, 2 doubles
The Cubs’ Kris Bryant became the first major leaguer to hit three homers and two doubles in a game on Monday night against the Cincinnati Reds. Bryant doubled home a run, hit a solo shot, had a three-run homer, doubled again and had another solo homer in the eighth as the Cubs pulled ahead 10-7. His 16 total bases set a club record. The three homers and five hits were a career high. His six RBIs matched his career high. He drove in six runs during Jake Arrieta’s 16-0 no-hitter at Great American Ball Park on April 21, hitting two homers including a grand slam. Arrieta was on the mound Monday and had a solo homer of his own before leaving after five innings.

MLB – Cubs call up Peralta to help struggling bullpen
The Chicago Cubs have brought up reliever Joel Peralta from the minors for some bullpen help. The Cubs signed the 40-year-old right-hander this month after he was released by Seattle. The Cubs’ bullpen has struggled during its slump last week. Gerardo Concepcion was optioned to Triple-A Iowa.

MLB –  Losses to Cleveland leave Tigers in a hole
When the Detroit Tigers won the AL Central every year from 2011-14, the title often seemed to come down to a handful of head-to-head matchups between the champions and their closest challengers. The Tigers consistently won those games during that impressive stretch, but so far this year, the roles are reversed. Detroit’s 9-3 loss to Cleveland on Sunday dropped the Tigers to 0-9 against the first-place Indians this season. Cleveland has outscored the Tigers 60-20 in those games, and because of that ineptitude against the AL Central’s top team, Detroit is seven games out of first place as it heads into a series against Miami starting tonight.  Mike Pelfrey is set to start tonight’s series opener in Detroit for the Tigers.

NBA – Bulls’ Hoiberg insists he can work with All-Star Butler
Chicago Bulls coach Fred Hoiberg insists he can still work with Jimmy Butler. Hoiberg was adamant they can coexist even though the two-time All-Star guard called him out last season and did not embrace his offense. Hoiberg said “absolutely, I can” when asked if he can coach Butler. He spoke Monday during a news conference to introduce first-round draft pick Denzel Valentine. The Bulls missed the playoffs at 42-40 in a difficult first season under Hoiberg and traded 2011 MVP Derrick Rose to New York last week. Hoiberg says he met with Butler and other players a few weeks ago in Los Angeles and saw him again in Chicago last week. Hoiberg says they have been in “constant communication” and Butler is “in a great frame of mind right now.”

NHL – Red Wings bringing back F Drew Miller on 1-year deal
The Detroit Red Wings have re-signed forward Drew Miller to a one-year deal. The 32-year-old Miller will make $1.025 million, plus up to $350,000 in bonuses. Miller has 51 goals and 49 assists in 449 games with the Red Wings since joining them in 2009-10. He played for Tampa Bay and Anaheim prior to that. Miller had only two points in 28 games for the Red Wings last season. He broke his jaw in early December and played only two games for Detroit after that. Miller did play 82 games in each of the previous two seasons.  The Red Wings announced Miller’s deal Monday.

Hockey Hall of Fame – Class of 2016 named
The Hockey Hall of Fame class of 2016 has been announced and Eric Lindros is finally a Hall of Famer. The class also includes Soviet star Sergei Makarov and goaltender Rogie Vachon. The late Pat Quinn made it, too. Because concussions and other injuries cut his career short, Lindros was passed over for the Hall of Fame six previous times. Makarov was more than a point-a-game scorer for the Soviet national team and he won the Calder Trophy as rookie of the year with Calgary in 1991. Vachon won the Vezina Trophy and was part of two Stanley Cup winners in Montreal.

Olympics – Ledecky heading to Rio, wins 400 free at US Olympic trials
Katie Ledecky earned her spot for the Rio Olympics, winning the 400-meter freestyle at the U.S. swimming trials Monday night. The only thing that didn’t go her way was another world record.  Ledecky set a blistering pace over the first half of the race, putting her more than 2 seconds ahead of the pace from her record-setting performance at the 2014 Pan Pacific Championships in Australia. But Ledecky tired a bit over the final 200, another world mark slipping away when she touched in 3 minutes, 58.98 seconds. Michigan swimmer Miranda Tucker of Plymouth finished fourth in her semifinal heat in the 100-meter breaststroke, with her time of 1:07.60 fast enough to get her into the finals. Ali DeLoof of Grosse Point finished second in her semi in the 100-meter backstroke and moves on to the finals with a time of 1:00.11.

Olympics – U.S. men’s hoops squad set
Kevin Durant and Carmelo Anthony are among the 12 players who have been selected to represent the U.S. men’s basketball team at the Rio Olympics. Durant and Anthony are the only players selected by USA Basketball with previous Olympic experience after a number of stars decided to skip the upcoming Summer Games.  The U.S. roster includes Warriors starters Klay Thompson, Draymond Green and Harrison Barnes, along with Kyle Lowry and DeMar DeRozan of the Raptors. Cleveland’s Kyrie Irving, Indiana’s Paul George and Chicago’s Jimmy Butler also made the team, as did Sacramento’s DeMarcus Cousins and DeAndre Jordan of the Clippers.
