Tigers 7, Indians 1 – Tyler Collins’ 3-run homer helps Tigers top Indians 7-1
Tyler Collins hit a three-run homer and Daniel Norris gave up only one run, helping the Detroit Tigers open a series against the Cleveland Indians with a 7-1 victory Monday night.  Nicholas Castellanos and Victor Martinez hit RBI doubles on consecutive pitches in the first inning. Collins sent a full-count pitch in the second over the right-center fence to put Detroit up 5-0. Alex Avila’s two-run single in the fifth inning gave the Tigers a six-run cushion. That was plenty of run support for Detroit’s pitcher.  Norris (2-2) allowed five hits _ including Edwin Encarnacion’s RBI single in the third inning _ four walks and struck out a season-high eight over six innings. Alex Wilson and Anibal Sanchez combined for three innings of scoreless relief as the Tigers won their second straight game. Trevor Bauer (2-3) gave up seven runs on seven hits and five walks in four-plus innings.

Royals 6, White Sox 1 – Hosmer, Bonifacio homer as Royals end 9-game losing streak
Eric Hosmer and Jorge Bonifacio hit two-run homers, and the Kansas City Royals snapped a nine-game losing streak with a 6-1 victory over the Chicago White Sox on Monday night. Bonifacio homered with two outs in the fourth after Alex Gordon doubled. It was his second home run in eight games since being promoted April 21 from Triple-A Omaha. Hosmer’s two-out homer in the seventh inning with Christian Colon aboard finished the night for White Sox rookie starter Dylan Covey (0-2).  Salvador Perez’s single in the fifth struck the third base bag and scored Alcides Escobar and Mike Moustakas with two outs. Left-hander Jason Vargas (4-1) allowed one run on five hits and three walks over six innings to pick up the win. Vargas has a 1.42 ERA in five starts.

Phillies 10, Cubs 2 – Joseph, Phillies strike early and rout Cubs 10-2
Tommy Joseph hit an early three-run homer, Aaron Altherr had three RBIs and the Philadelphia Phillies routed the Chicago Cubs 10-2 on Monday night. Michael Saunders and Freddy Galvis also homered in support of starter Vince Velasquez (2-2) to help the Phillies stop a three-game losing streak. Chicago opened a seven-game homestand with its fourth loss in five games. After rain delayed the start for 85 minutes, Philadelphia jumped on Brett Anderson (2-1) for seven runs on seven hits and one walk in 1 1/3 innings. The start was his shortest since August last year with the Los Angeles Dodgers. Cesar Hernandez singled to open the game before Altherr doubled him home. Maikel Franco walked and, one out later, Joseph lined a hanging slider into the left-field bleachers for a 4-0 lead.

MLB – Tigers’ Miguel Cabrera expected to come off DL on Tuesday
Miguel Cabrera says he feels good. He looked good, perhaps great, when swinging before the Detroit Tigers hosted the Cleveland Indians on Monday night. Detroit manager Brad Ausmus says he expects Cabrera to come off the disabled list on Tuesday to face Cleveland. The superstar slugger hasn’t played since April 21 because of a groin injury. Cabrera crushed some pitches in batting practice Monday, hitting one off the metal awning that covers TV cameras beyond the center-field wall and another that went deep into the left-field seats. He jogged to first to test his injury and rounded the base and went to second base once. Cabrera went on to field grounders at first base and to hit more pitches in the team’s indoor batting.

NBA – For 2nd time, Hall-of-Famer Bird resigns as Pacers president
Larry Bird made it official Monday and announced his resignation as the Indiana Pacers president of basketball operations. It’s the second time in five years he has walked away from Indiana’s top front office position. General manager Kevin Pritchard will replace Bird as the Pacers’ top decision-maker. Bird says simply that he wanted to step away from the full-time job. He says it has nothing to do with his health or the team. The move had been in the works since last week when word leaked that Bird was planning to leave the organization for the third time. He also resigned in 2000 after three seasons as Indiana’s coach. The 60-year-old Hall-of-Famer is the only person in league history to collect the league’s MVP, coach of the year and executive of the year awards.

WNBA – WNBA will stream games via Twitter
The WNBA will stream 20 games a year over the next few seasons on Twitter in a deal announced Monday night. WNBA President Lisa Borders calls league officials “are thrilled to bring live WNBA games to Twitter, which will allow us to further showcase our league to a global audience.” It’s the first women’s sport to be live-streamed on Twitter.

NFL – Pentagon: Academy athletes must serve before going pro
The U.S. Defense Department has rescinded its 2016 policy allowing military service academy athletes to go straight to the pros upon graduation. Athletes such as Air Force wide receiver Jalen Robinette, the NCAA’s leader in yards per catch in 2016, will have to serve two years of active duty before applying for reserve status to pursue a career in professional sports.  Pentagon chief spokesman Dana W. White said in a statement Monday: “Our military academies exist to develop future officers who enhance the readiness and the lethality of our military services. … Upon graduation, officers will serve as military officers for their minimum commitment of two years.”

NCAAMBB – Michigan’s Donnal heading to Clemson
Former Michigan forward Mark Donnal is going to play his final season at Clemson.  The 6-foot-9 Donnal posted on Twitter that he had a “great” four years with the Wolverines, but was excited about an opportunity with Clemson men’s basketball.  Donnal, whose post included a photo of him in a cap and gown, can play immediately as a graduate transfer. Donnal will add size to a team that lost its top two rebounders in Sidy Djitte and Jaron Blossomgame.  Donnal averaged 12 minutes, 3.9 points and two rebounds in 38 games. He had 12 blocks, the third-highest total on the team.   Donnal will be the second transfer suiting up for the Tigers next season after David Skara, a 6-8 forward from Valparaiso who sat out this past season.
