Tigers 7, Athletics 3 – Cabrera homers twice, lifts Tigers to 7-3 win over Athletics
Miguel Cabrera hit two home runs, Jordan Zimmermann’s scoreless innings streak ended after center fielder Tyler Collins appeared to direct an obscene gesture at fans and the Detroit Tigers snapped a skid with a 7-3 win over the Oakland Athletics on Monday night. Zimmermann (4-0) gave up a run for the first time with the Tigers following 24 1/3 scoreless innings, and Collins seemed to take the brunt of the blame from fans. Collins extended the middle finger on his left hand and waved it from right to left, and also appeared to yell an obscenity, as he appeared to react angrily to the booing crowd. He seemed to lose Oakland’s Marcus Semien flyball in the lights, and an error charged to left fielder Justin Upton allowed Semien to reach third. Semien scored after Billy Burns, the next batter, hit a single to end Zimmermann’s unblemished start.

White Sox 7, Blue Jays 5 – Frazier drives in go-ahead run, White Sox beat Blue Jays 7-5
Todd Frazier doubled home the go-ahead run in a five-run seventh inning and the Chicago White Sox rallied to beat the Toronto Blue Jays 7-5 on Monday night. Frazier went 2 for 3 with three RBIs, Jimmy Rollins had three hits, and Adam Eaton had two hits and two RBIs as the White Sox overcame a four-run deficit to win their fourth straight. Zach Putnam (1-0) pitched 1 1/3 innings for the win. Dan Jennings got one out, Matt Albers worked the eighth and David Robertson finished for his eighth save. Troy Tulowitzki made the final out when he was hit by Michael Saunders’ infield hopper while running from first to second. Brett Cecil (0-4) took the loss.

MLB – Tigers OF Tyler Collins directs obscene gesture at fans
Detroit Tigers center fielder Tyler Collins directed an obscene gesture at booing home fans after losing a ball in the lights Monday night. “To be at home and to hear boos after that play hit a trigger inside of me and I lashed out completely inappropriately,” Collins said after Detroit beat the Oakland Athletics 7-3. “I’m absolutely embarrassed it happened and I’m very sorry to everybody in Detroit.” Collins extended the middle finger on his left hand and waved it from right to left, and also appeared to yell an obscenity at the fans. He said he could not see the flyball hit by Oakland’s Marcus Semien, and an error charged to left fielder Justin Upton allowed Semien to reach third, bringing on the boos. “Clearly, it’s something that can’t happen,” Tigers manager Brad Ausmus said. “I spoke to Tyler immediately in the dugout, in the tunnel, after it happened and I spoke to him after the game. He regrets it.” Semien scored after Billy Burns, the next batter, hit a single to end pitcher Jordan Zimmermann’s scoreless streak at 24 1/3 innings. Collins entered batting .100 with one RBI. He has appeared in 88 games over three seasons with the Tigers.

NFL – Court rules Brady must serve 4-game suspension
A federal appeals court in New York has ruled that Patriots quarterback Tom Brady must serve the four-game “Deflategate” suspension imposed by the NFL. The ruling overturns a lower judge and sides with the NFL in a battle with the players union. The decision by a three-judge panel may end the legal battle over the scandal that led to months of football fans arguing over air pressure and the reputation of one of the league’s top teams and players. The ruling can be appealed to the full 2nd Circuit or to the U.S. Supreme Court, but it would likely be a steep and time-consuming climb even if the courts took the unusual step to consider it. The NFL Players Association says it is disappointed in the ruling. The union says it will “consider all” its options in the matter.

Blues 3, Blackhawks 2 – Brouwer puts Blues over top, eliminates Blackhawks
Troy Brouwer tapped in his own rebound to snap a third-period tie and the St. Louis Blues advanced to the second round of the playoffs for the first time in four seasons, eliminating the defending Stanley Cup champion Chicago Blackhawks 3-2 in Game 7 of their Western Conference quarterfinals series Monday night.  Brouwer, who played for the Blackhawks’ Cup winner in 2010 and was among the veteran additions to a team trying to break through, swiped in a backhander. The goal at 8:31 was his first in 24 postseason games since 2013. Jori Lehtera scored his first career playoff goal and rookie defenseman Colton Parayko also scored for the Blues, who avoided another inglorious finish. They led 2-0 early before the Blackhawks tied it in the second period. Chicago just missed a chance to tie it when Brent Seabrook’s shot went off both posts with about 3:30 left.

NBA – NBA: No foul on Jackson’s shot to end Cavs’ win over Pistons
The NBA says Reggie Jackson was not fouled on the final play of Detroit’s loss to Cleveland, when the point guard complained after the game that referees should be penalized for mistakes. Jackson rushed up the floor and missed a jumper under heavy pressure from Kyrie Irving as the Cavaliers finished off a 100-98 victory Sunday that gave them a four-game sweep. Jackson called for “fines, suspensions, being fired” for referees, adding: “Make bad plays or questionable, you’re not really being productive to the sport. Things should have consequences, just like the players.” But the NBA ruled Monday in its report about the last 2 minutes of the game that Irving maintained legal guarding position and made no contact with Jackson as he initially reached in for the steal, and that Jackson initiated the contact on the shot attempt by jumping sideways.

NBA – Curry out two weeks
That slip on the floor the other night will sideline Golden State superstar Stephen Curry two weeks with a sprained knee ligament. Curry will miss the rest of the first round of the playoffs and likely at least four games in round two if the Warriors advance.

NBA – Paul leaves Game 4 with broken bone in right hand
Los Angeles Clippers guard Chris Paul broke a bone in his right hand midway through the third quarter and left Game 4 against the Portland Trail Blazers.  It was not clear exactly how Paul was injured, but it appeared he may have bent the wrist awkwardly when defending Portland’s Gerald Henderson on a layup.  Paul retreated to the bench and was attended to by team trainers before leaving for the locker room. He angrily kicked at a seat cushion on the court as he left.  The Clippers later reported Paul fractured the third metatarsal in his right hand.

ESPN/NBC – AP Source: Mike Tirico leaving ESPN this summer for NBC
A person familiar with the move says Mike Tirico is leaving ESPN and ABC Sports this summer when his contract expires to work for NBC. The person spoke Monday night to The Associated Press on condition of anonymity because neither network had made an announcement about the broadcaster. SportsBusiness Journal was first to report the news. Tirico began working at ESPN in 1991 and became its “Monday Night Football,” play-by-play announcer in 2006. He seamlessly transitions to call the action for major golf and tennis tournaments, NBA and college basketball and college football. The Ann Arbor, Michigan, resident was raised in Queens, New York, and graduated from Syracuse.
