White Sox 12, Royals 1 – Davidson sparks 8-run 6th as White Sox rout Royals 12-1
Matt Davidson had two hits and three RBIs in an eight-run sixth, Chicago’s highest-scoring inning in five years, and the White Sox routed the struggling Kansas City Royals 12-1 on Monday night.  Miguel Gonzalez (3-0) lowered his ERA to 2.00, allowing an unearned run and two hits in eight innings. Davidson set a career-high with three hits and tied his best with four RBIs. Melky Cabrera, Todd Frazier and Tyler Saladino drove in two runs each for the White Sox, who out-hit the Royals 15-2.  Chicago put together its high-scoring inning since a nine-run fifth against Texas on July 3, 2012. The Royals have lost five straight and scored a major league-low 47 runs. Jason Vargas (3-1) gave up four runs, three earned, and seven hits in five innings. His ERA rose from a big league-best 0.44 to 1.40.

Cubs 14, Pirates 3 – Cubs keep rolling, crush Pirates 14-3
Addison Russell set a career high with four hits, Jason Heyward homered for the third time in four games and drove in four runs as the Chicago Cubs jumped on the Pittsburgh Pirates early in a 14-3 victory on Monday night. Ben Zobrist added three RBIs for Chicago as the defending World Series champions won for the fifth time in six games. Anthony Rizzo had three hits to extend his hitting streak to 13 games. Kyle Schwarber, Kris Bryant and Miguel Montero all had two hits apiece for the Cubs. Chicago scored four runs with two outs in the first inning off Chad Kuhl (1-2) and added five more in the second to give Brett Anderson (2-0) all the breathing room he would need. Anderson struggled at times with his command, walking six in six innings while striking out three and allowed three runs, one earned.

MLB – Twins’ Sano suspended 1 game for benches-clearing role
Minnesota’s Miguel Sano has been suspended for one game and fined by Major League Baseball for what the sport termed “aggressive actions” that caused benches to clear during a game against Detroit last weekend. Detroit’s JaCoby Jones was hit in the face by a pitch from Justin Haley in the third inning of the Tigers’ 5-4 victory Saturday. Two innings later, Detroit’s Matthew Boyd threw behind Sano, who pointed his bat toward Boyd and yelled out at the mound. Tigers catcher James McCann intervened and appeared to put his mitt in the face of Sano, who reacted immediately with a right hand to McCann’s mask. Joe Torre, MLB’s chief baseball officer, announced Sano’s suspension Monday. The players’ association appealed, allowing Sano to continue playing until the appeal is heard and decided.  Boyd was fined after MLB concluded he intentionally threw a pitch at Sano.

NHL – Blackhawks fire assistant coach Mike Kitchen
The Chicago Blackhawks have fired assistant coach Mike Kitchen. Kitchen joined coach Joel Quenneville’s staff in July 2010. He helped the Blackhawks win the Stanley Cup in 2013 and 2015. The team announced the move on Monday. General manager Stan Bowman says in a release they “believe this decision is best for our organization moving forward.”  The Blackhawks won the Central Division this season with a 50-23-9 record, finishing with the most points in the Western Conference. But they were swept by Nashville in the first round of the playoffs, managing just three goals in the series.

NBA – Bulls to start Canaan at point guard in Game 5 vs Celtics
The Chicago Bulls will start seldom-used point guard Isaiah Canaan in Game 5 of their first-round playoff series against the Boston Celtics. The Bulls are in a desperate spot after back-to-back losses at home. The series is now tied 2-2 heading into Game 5 at Boston on Wednesday.

NCAAFB/NFL – Jake Long retires after 9 seasons hampered by injuries
Jake Long, the first overall pick in the 2008 draft and a four-time Pro Bowl left tackle for the Miami Dolphins, has decided to retire after a torn Achilles tendon ended his ninth NFL season early with the Minnesota Vikings. Long announced Monday on his Twitter account that a lack of progress on his latest rehabilitation has outweighed his desire to continue playing. He appeared in four games with the Vikings last year before getting hurt. Long performed as advertised for the Dolphins after a standout college career at Michigan, but he was ultimately waylaid by serious injuries. Long tore his ACL in both 2013 and 2014 with the St. Louis Rams, and he played sparingly for the Atlanta Falcons in 2015.

NCAAFB – Ex-Spartan football player returning to Michigan in sex case
Former Michigan State defensive end Auston Robertson has waived extradition and will be returned to Michigan from Indiana to face a third-degree criminal sexual conduct charge. Ingham County Chief Assistant Prosecutor Lisa McCormick says Monday that the 19-year-old Robertson could be arraigned as early as Tuesday. A police task force arrested Robertson on Saturday at a relative’s home in Fort Wayne, Indiana. Robertson comes from Fort Wayne. He was being held Monday in the Allen County Jail in that city. Robertson is accused of forcing a woman to have sex with him at her Meridian Township apartment on April 8. Shortly after prosecutors announced the charge on Friday, Michigan State said Robertson had been dismissed from the football team. McCormick says Robertson doesn’t yet have a lawyer.

NCAA Hockey – Michigan hires Michigan Tech’s Pearson as new hockey coach
Michigan has hired Mel Pearson as its new hockey coach. The school announced the move Monday. Pearson replaces Red Berenson, who retired earlier this month after more than three decades at the helm. Pearson says he is looking forward to building on the Michigan program’s rich tradition. He spent the past six seasons as the coach at Michigan Tech but was previously an assistant at Michigan from 1988-2011. Pearson went 118-92-29 at Michigan Tech, including a 75-34-14 mark over the last three seasons.  Berenson calls Pearson “a great fit for Michigan hockey.”

NASCAR – Jimmie Johnson grabs rare Bristol win after Larson mishap
Jimmie Johnson has won consecutive races for the 11th time in his career with a rare victory at Bristol Motor Speedway.  The seven-time NASCAR champion doesn’t consider Bristol to be his best track, and Monday’s victory was only the second at Thunder Valley in his career. But Johnson’s Chevrolet for Hendrick Motorsports was strong enough to contend with Kyle Larson, the points leader and most dominant driver of the day. A speeding penalty on Larson late in the race allowed Johnson to make it look easy in the end.  Clint Bowyer finished second and Stewart-Haas Racing teammate Kevin Harvick was third in the race postponed a day by rain.  Matt Kenseth was the highest finishing Toyota driver with a very quiet fourth. Joey Logano in a Ford was fifth for Team Penske and Larson rallied to sixth.
