Red Wings 3, Stars 2 – OT – Pavel Datysuk scores in overtime, Red Wings beat Stars 3-2
Pavel Datsyuk scored a power-play goal in overtime and the Detroit Red Wings beat the Dallas Stars 3-2 on Monday night for their third straight victory. Datsyuk put a rebound past goalie Antti Niemi at 2:33 of overtime while Mattias Janmark was off for hooking. Detroit moved into third place in the Atlantic Division, one point ahead of Boston. Rookie center Andreas Athanasiou scored Detroit’s first two goals, and goalie Jimmy Howard won for the first time since Dec. 3.  Dallas’ Vernon Fiddler put in his own rebound to tie the score with 1:31 to play in the third period. The Stars had an extra skater on after pulling Niemi. Fiddler also assisted on Colton Sceviour’s second-period goal. Howard made 39 saves, and Niemi had 30.

NCAA Basketball – Kansas back on top of in AP men’s Top 25
Kansas is back on top of the men’s college basketball poll by The Associated Press. Villanova had been No. 1 the past three weeks. The Jayhawks are 25-4 and were No. 1 for two weeks in January. On Monday, they were a runaway choice, receiving 63 first-place votes from the 65-member national media panel. Michigan State is 24-5 and was No. 1 for a season-best four weeks. The Spartans drew the other two first-place votes. Villanova lost to Xavier last week and fell two spots to third. The Wildcats were followed in the top 10 by Virginia, Xavier, Oklahoma, Miami, North Carolina, Oregon and West Virginia. This is Oregon’s first appearance in the top 10 this season. California was ranked in three polls earlier this season and is the week’s only newcomer at No. 25. The Bears replace Notre Dame, which fell out from 23rd.

Tigers 7, Moccasins 2 – Tigers prospect Jones homers in 7-2 win over Fla Southern
Detroit infield prospect JaCoby Jones hit a tiebreaking three-run homer in the seventh inning, and the Tigers beat Florida Southern 7-2 on Monday for their 11th straight victory over the Moccasins. Florida Southern is located in Lakeland, where the Tigers hold spring training. Detroit played most of its expected opening day lineup but pulled regulars early. Ian Kinsler had a single in his only at-bat to open the game for the Tigers. The Tigers didn’t use any of their top pitchers. Kevin Ziomek started and pitched two innings with two strikeouts. Detroit acquired Jones from Pittsburgh last year when the Tigers traded reliever Joakim Soria. During the offseason, Jones was suspended 50 games following a positive test for a drug of abuse under baseball’s minor league drug program.

NCAA Football – Unconcerned with critics, Harbaugh and Michigan bask in sun
Jim Harbaugh says he doesn’t care about critics of Michigan’s spring practice trip to Florida nor does the coach understand all the fuss about the Wolverines being snowbirds for a week. Michigan held the first of four scheduled practices Monday at the IMG Academy under blue skies with feathery clouds that provided pleasant cover from the sun. The Wolverines worked out for four hours in 70-degree temperatures and then went to the beach. Back home in Ann Arbor, Michigan, skies were gray and it was 48 degrees. Snow was expected Tuesday.  The Wolverines trip has drawn criticism from the commissioners of both the Southeastern Conference and Atlantic Coast Conference because it falls during spring break, when players usually have off.

NBA – Pistons partnering with non-profit to help Detroit schools
The Detroit Pistons are partnering with City Year to try to grow the nonprofit group’s reach throughout Detroit public schools over the next three years. The Pistons say financial commitments by owner Tom Gores, Palace Sports and Entertainment executive Arn Tellem and the Detroit Pistons Foundation will support a team of City Year members working with students at Osborn High School in Detroit.

Ben Wallace to be inducted into Michigan Sports Hall of Fame
The Michigan Sports Hall of Fame announced Monday night that Ben Wallace will be a part of its next class. Wallace, a four-time NBA Defensive Player of the Year, helped the Detroit Pistons win the 2004 NBA title. He will be inducted Sept. 9 along with former Detroit Red Wings Brendan Shanahan and Chris Osgood. The class also includes former University of Detroit and Detroit Pistons standout John Long, former Detroit Lion Robert “Bob” Mann, former Flint Powers High School basketball coach Kathy McGee, Oakland University swimming coach Pete Hovland, and baseball writer Tom Gage. Former New York Yankees star Derek Jeter and Hockey Hall of Famer Mike Modano, both of whom are from Michigan, will be honored after being unable to attend their induction ceremony last year.

NFL – Bears place franchise tag on top receiver Alshon Jeffery
The Chicago Bears have placed the franchise tag on top receiver Alshon Jeffery.  With the move announced Monday, Jeffery is due just under $14.6 million next season. He has until July 15 to reach a multiyear deal with the Bears, or he must play next season under the tag. The move comes on the heels of an injury-plagued year in which he led the team with 807 yards despite being limited to nine games. Jeffery played in all 16 games the previous two years, finishing with 1,421 yards in 2013 and 1,133 in 2014.

NFL – Ramsey gets leg up on Hargreaves at NFL scouting combine
Jalen Ramsey finished the 40-yard dash in 4.41 seconds Monday, easily beating Vernon Hargreaves as they vie to become the first cornerback selected in this year’s NFL draft. Hargreaves, who played at Florida, was clocked at 4.50 in the final workouts at the league’s scouting combine. Ramsey, of Florida State, also had the best vertical jump, 41 ½ inches, and the longest broad jump, 11 feet, 3 inches, among defensive backs. NFL teams are trying to determine whether the 6-foot-1, 209-pound Ramsey will play cornerback or safety. The biggest surprise Monday may have been Purdue’s Anthony Brown, who ran a 4.35 in the 40 and did 19 reps on the bench press to finish among the top three in both categories.

NFL – Report: A new contract for Brady
Tom Brady has reportedly agreed to a two-year contract extension with the Patriots. The deal will significantly lessen Brady’s salary cap hit for the team for 2016. The 38-year old has said for years that he would like to play into his 40’s, and it appears he may get what he wanted. The agreement was first reported by ESPN.

Golf – Bohn: Lucky to be alive
Jason Bohn says he’s lucky to be alive after suffering a major heart attack Friday at the Honda Classic.  He told SiriusXM PGA Tour Radio that doctors discovered his left anterior descending artery was 99 percent blocked and gave him a “hell of a mulligan” by putting him on the proper blood thinners in time.  Bohn is still hospitalized and has no idea when he’ll be able to return to competition.
