Last Night
Kansas City Royals 5, New York Mets 4 – 14 Innings                    (KC Leads 1-0)

Royals 5, Mets 4 – F/14 Innings – Royals outlast Mets to win marathon opener
In the longest World Series Game 1 ever, the Kansas City Royals outlasted the New York Mets 5-4 in 14 innings to gain the early edge in the 111th Fall Classic. Eric Hosmer hit a sacrifice fly that scored Alcides Escobar from third base to end it and give the Royals a 1-0 lead in the best-of-seven Series. The game took 5 hours, 9 minutes. The losing pitcher was 42-year-old Bartolo Colon, who escaped a bases-loaded jam in the 12th before running out of luck in the 14th inning. Kansas City forced extra innings when Alex Gordon homered off Mets closer Jeurys Familia with one out in the ninth to tie it. Familia had not blown a save since July 30 before Gordon sent a 97 mph pitch over the center field fence.

NHL – National Hockey League
Last Night
Carolina Hurricanes 3, Detroit Red Wings 1

Hurricanes 3, Red Wings 1 – Rask, Hainsey lead Hurricanes past Red Wings, 3-1
Victor Rask and Ron Hainsey both scored to lead the Carolina Hurricanes to a 3-1 victory over the Detroit Red Wings on Tuesday night. Eric Staal added an empty-net goal with 30 seconds left to cap the scoring for the Hurricanes, and Cam Ward stopped 24 shots. Carolina is now 2-1 against Detroit this season, with both wins coming on the road, but just 1-5 against the rest of the league.  Jakub Kindl scored and Petr Mrazek stopped 18 shots for Detroit. Hainsey’s slap shot beating a screened Mrazek for the tiebreaking score at 4:36 of the third.

NBA – National Basketball Association – Season Opener
Last Night
Chicago Bulls 97, Cleveland Cavaliers 95
Detroit Pistons 106, Atlanta Hawks 94

Hurricanes 3, Red Wings 1 – With Obama watching, Bulls hold off Cavaliers 97-95
Nikola Mirotic scored 19 points and Derrick Rose added 18 to lead the Chicago Bulls to a season-opening 97-95 victory over LeBron James and the Cleveland Cavaliers with President Barack Obama watching on Tuesday night. Pau Gasol blocked a potential tying layup by James in the closing seconds. Jimmy Butler then broke up an inbounds pass intended for James as time expired. The president sat courtside for most of the game as his beloved Bulls knocked off the defending Eastern Conference champions and gave coach Fred Hoiberg a narrow win in his first game. James scored 25 points and grabbed 10 rebounds for Cleveland, but the Cavaliers came up short against the team they knocked out in the conference semifinals last season.

Pistons 106, Hawks 94 – Pistons surprise Hawks on opening night, winning 106-94
Kentavious Caldwell-Pope scored 21 points to lead all five Detroit starters in double figures, carrying the Pistons to a surprising 106-94 victory over the Atlanta Hawks on Tuesday night and ruining the home opener of the team with the best record in the Eastern Conference last season.  The Pistons, who haven’t had a winning season since 2008 and finished 28 games behind the Hawks a year ago, began to pull away just before halftime. They led by double figures through most of the final two quarters and held on despite missing 20 of their last 22 shots from the field. Atlanta was looking to build on last season’s franchise-best record of 60-22 and run to the conference final. Instead, the Hawks picked up where they left off in a sweep by the Cleveland Cavaliers, losing again in familiar fashion. The Pistons had a commanding 59-40 edge on the boards.

Chicago Bulls at Brooklyn Nets, 7:30 p.m.

NFL – Roethlisberger to return
Ben Roethlisberger is ready to return for the Steelers when they take on unbeaten Cincinnati Sunday. The two-time Super Bowl-winning quarterback has missed four games for 4-3 Pittsburgh with a sprained knee and bruised leg. Roethlisberger initially feared the worst after he left in the third quarter of a September win at St. Louis, but he was relieved to learn the injury didn’t end his season.

NFL – JPP returns to Giants
Defensive end Jason Pierre-Paul and the New York Giants have agreed to a contract more than three months after he damaged his right hand in a fireworks accident in Florida. It’s a one-year deal, heavy with incentives. Pierre-Paul met with the team over the past two days and was given the OK to play by team doctors.

NFL – Mallett gets the ax
Houston has released quarterback Ryan Mallett after he missed the team’s charter flight to Florida for the Dolphins game last weekend.  Mallett says he missed the flight because of traffic and instead took a commercial flight to meet the team in Miami.
