Tigers 5, Angels 0 – Verlander takes no-hit bid into 9th, Tigers beat Angels 5-0
Justin Verlander lost a bid for his third no-hitter when Chris Iannetta lined a leadoff double in the ninth inning that landed barely fair on the left-field line, and the Detroit Tigers beat the Los Angeles Angels 5-0 Wednesday night. Trying to become the sixth major leaguer to throw three no-hitters, Verlander settled instead for a one-hit shutout. He was an inch away from so much more.  Iannetta’s shot kicked up chalk and rolled into the left-field corner. Verlander attempted to will it foul with body English, then arched his back in disappointment after the ball hit right on the line. Nick Castellanos had a solo home run and Migeul Cabrera had a 2 run home run for the Tigers.

Red Sox 3, White Sox 0 – Porcello pitches Red Sox past Sale, White Sox 3-0
Rick Porcello pitched seven sparkling innings in his return from a triceps injury, leading the Boston Red Sox to a 3-0 victory over the Chicago White Sox on Wednesday night. Porcello and Chris Sale had nearly identical lines, but Travis Shaw hit a two-run homer off Nate Jones (1-1) with two outs in the eighth. Robbie Ross Jr. then got three outs for the Red Sox before Junichi Tazawa finished the six-hitter for his third save in nine chances. Porcello (6-11) allowed five hits, struck out five and walked none in one of his best starts in a disappointing debut season with Boston. The right-hander was acquired in a December trade with Detroit, and then agreed to an $82.5 million, four-year contract in April.

Giants 4, Cubs 2 – Peavy shuts down Cubs as Giants earn 1st win in series, 4-2
Buster Posey followed Brandon Belt’s leadoff triple in the sixth with a go-ahead double, Jake Peavy won for the second time in six starts, and the San Francisco Giants beat the Cubs 4-2 on Wednesday night to stop Chicago’s six-game winning streak. Kelby Tomlinson added an RBI double of his own in the sixth against Kyle Hendricks as the Giants ended a three-game slide with their second victory in seven games. Nori Aoki homered for San Francisco. With their first win in six meetings this month against the Cubs, San Francisco avoided its first six-game skid in the series since 1993-94. Peavy (4-6) allowed five hits and two runs, struck out three and walked three in 6 1-3 innings to beat the Cubs for the second time in his last six outings against them.

Sparks 81, Fever 79 – Dabovic, Parker lead Sparks to 3rd straight road win
Ana Dabovic scored nine of her 18 points in the fourth quarter as the Los Angeles Sparks beat Indiana 81-79 on Wednesday night. Marissa Coleman and Briann January made back-to-back 3-pointers for Indiana to tie it at 79 with 28 seconds left. Dabovic hit a pullback jumper and Indiana’s Shavonte Zellous missed two free throws with 1.9 remaining.

NHL – Chico Maki dies
Longtime Chicago Blackhawks right wing Ron “Chico” Maki has died at 76. Maki appeared in three All-Star games during a 15-year NHL career spent entirely with the Hawks. He helped Chicago reach the 1971 and `73 finals after appearing in one playoff game with the 1961 Stanley Cup champs. Maki had 143 goals and 435 points in 841 regular-season games from 1961-76.

NFL – Lions trade Michael Williams to Patriots for draft pick
The Detroit Lions have traded tackle Michael Williams to the New England Patriots for a draft pick. The Lions took Williams in the seventh round of the 2013 draft, but he has not played in an NFL game. Williams played tight end at Alabama, catching 51 passes in four seasons and even returning a handful of kickoffs. But he was considered more of a throwback blocking end when he came into the NFL. Lions offensive coordinator Joe Lombardi said a couple of weeks ago that Williams had significantly improved his quickness and technical ability. The Lions signed offensive lineman Joe Madsen and they also put linebacker Kevin Snyder on injured reserve. The Lions initially said in a release that they received a 2016 draft pick for Williams, but a team spokesman later said the pick is undisclosed.

NFL – Cutler and the Bears thin at receiver as season nears
Chicago Bears quarterback Jay Cutler finds himself throwing to third- and fourth-team players after a hip injury pushed veteran receiver Eddie Royal to the sidelines for Wednesday’s practice _ if not longer. The Bears are already without receivers Alshon Jeffery (strained calf), Marquess Wilson (hamstring) and Kevin White (shin surgery). Royal is the fourth Bears wide receiver to go down with an injury in preseason. Cutler says he’s never seen anything like that happen before.

NFL – Former, current Niner indicted
A Santa Clara County grand jury has indicted former San Francisco 49ers defensive lineman Ray McDonald on one count of rape of an intoxicated person.  The indictment stems from an incident last Dec. 15 at McDonald’s home. Current 49ers linebacker Ahmad Brooks has also been charged by the Santa Clara County District Attorney’s Office with misdemeanor sexual battery for an alleged assault the same day involving the same victim. The case against Brooks also was announced Wednesday.

NCAA – Looking to future, more NCAA athletes seek own trademarks
Some big stars in college football are getting trademarks for their names, nicknames and taglines.  Ohio State University’s Ezekiel Elliott applied for trademarks to use his nicknames “Zeke” and “Eze” on merchandise this month. At Mississippi State University, Dak Prescott filed for trademarks on “Dak Attack,” “Who Dak” and his name. Others to pursue trademarks while in college include NFL quarterbacks Johnny Manziel and Jameis Winston, both Heisman Trophy winners.  The NCAA forbids athletes from cashing in on their athletic success while in school, but experts say that landing a trademark in college can pave the way for lucrative licensing deals later. It also stops merchandise companies from selling goods without the athletes’ permission. The practice is common in professional sports, and some experts said it’s a sign that the line between college and pro sports is eroding further.

NCAA – Indiana administration expects athletes to behave better
Indiana President Michael McRobbie has seen too many legal problems in the athletic department. So has athletic director Fred Glass. On Wednesday, Glass told reporters that he and McRobbie delivered a clear, stern message to coaches during a recent all-staff meeting. Afterward, the school released a transcript of McRobbie’s remarks, in which he said he doesn’t want to see “any more stories of repeated student misbehavior.” The growing consternation has arisen from an 18-month series of off-the-field incidents. Two basketball players and one football player have been kicked off their teams and several other players have been suspended.

Olympics – LA bid stumbles
Los Angeles’ 2024 Olympics plan has stalled amid questions about potential runaway costs and the impact on neighborhoods already strangled by traffic and congestion.  The City Council had been expected to vote on a proposal to give Mayor Eric Garcetti broad authority to execute agreements linked to the bid. But the vote has pushed backed until at least Friday, 2 1/2 weeks before a Sept. 15 deadline for the USOC to enter a bid with the IOC for the 2024 Games.
