Last Night
New York Yankees 10, Detroit Tigers 2
Chicago White Sox 4, Minnesota Twins 3
Chicago Cubs 9, Cincinnati Reds 3

Yankees 10, Tigers 2 – Sanchez homers again, Yankees rout Tigers 10-2
Gary Sanchez continued his power surge with his third homer in two games as New York rolled past Detroit.  Sanchez hit a solo homer in the first inning and added a two-run single in the third. He has homered in six of the past nine games, and he has nine long balls over the past 14 contests, giving him 26 for the season. Luis Severino (11-5) collected a victory for the sixth time in his last seven starts. He limited the Tigers to one run on six hits and a walk while striking out eight in 6 2/3 innings.

White Sox 4, Twins 3 – Tim Anderson’s hit in 9th gives Chicago 4-3 win over Twins
Tim Anderson lined a single to left to score Avisail Garcia with the winning run as Chicago claimed a walk-off victory over Minnesota. The White Sox shortstop sent a 1-0 pitch from Trevor Hildenberger (2-2) with one out in the ninth inning for his first career game-ending hit. Danny Farquhar (3-2) worked a scoreless inning for the victory. Garcia led off the bottom of the ninth with a single to right and reached second on Kevan Smith’s sacrifice bunt. An intentional walk to Yolmer Sanchez set the stage for Anderson.

Cubs 9, Reds 3 – Schwarber homers, Cubs stay hot with 9-3 win over Reds
Kyle Schwarber hit a three-run homer and Tommy La Stella added a two-run shot as Chicago won its fifth straight.  Mike Montgomery (4-6) allowed four hits in six shutout innings. The Cubs played without third baseman Kris Bryant, who was hit on the hand by a pitch during the ninth inning on Tuesday night. He was replaced by La Stella, who reached base four times. The Reds’ Joey Votto hit a solo homer in the ninth, his 33rd homer of the season, off Hector Rondon. Cincinnati wasn’t finished with Rondon, who allowed back-to-back homers by Eugenio Suarez and Scott Schebler before recording the final out.

MLB – Pirates ruin Hill’s no-hit bid with walk-off HR
Josh Harrison ended Rich Hill’s no-hit bid with a walk-off home run in the 10th inning, giving the Pittsburgh Pirates a 1-0 victory over the Los Angeles Dodgers on Wednesday night.  Harrison lifted a 2-1 pitch over the left-field wall. After Hill (9-5) began with eight perfect innings, third baseman Logan Forsythe committed an error with no outs in the ninth, allowing Jordy Mercer to reach. Hill threw 99 pitches, 75 of them strikes.  Josh Bell nearly broke up the no-hit attempt twice earlier. In the second inning, he was called safe when he seemingly beat first baseman Adrian Gonzalez’s throw to Hill. After a challenge, however, the call was reversed. Then, in the eighth inning, Bell sharply struck a ball toward center field, but second baseman Chase Utley robbed him with a diving catch.

MLB – Former MLB GM Klein dies after heart surgery complications
Former major league general manager Joe Klein has died at 75.  Klein had two-year stints as GM of the Rangers, Indians and Tigers from 1982-95. NFL – NAACP wants to talk with NFL about Kaepernick
The NAACP wants a meeting with the NFL commissioner to discuss the fate of Colin Kaepernick. The former San Francisco 49ers quarterback who refused to stand for the national anthem is a free agent now, and no club has signed him. The NAACP says in a letter to the football commissioner, Roger Goodell, that it’s apparently “no sheer coincidence” that Kaepernick hasn’t been picked up. The NAACP’s interim president and CEO, Derrick Johnson, says “no player should be victimized and discriminated against because of his exercise of free speech.”

NCAA Football – Ohio State backup QB Burrow sidelined with broken hand
Ohio State backup quarterback Joe Burrow will be sidelined indefinitely after breaking his throwing hand in practice. An Ohio State spokesman says Burrow, a redshirt sophomore, had surgery after breaking a bone in his right hand during practice on Monday. Burrow backed up J.T. Barrett last season and was competing for the job with Dwayne Haskins in preseason camp. After redshirting the 2015 season, Burrow played in five games last season in mop-up duty. He completed 22 of 28 passes for 226 yards and two touchdowns.

NCAA Basketball – Ball State player Zach Hollywood found dead in apparent suicide
Ball State basketball player Zach Hollywood has been found dead in what an Indiana coroner says was an apparent suicide. The 6-foot-9 forward was found dead in an off-campus apartment on Tuesday. The 19-year-old redshirted last season as a freshman and had four years of eligibility remaining.

Golf – Masters – Billy Payne retires as Masters chairman
Billy Payne is retiring as chairman of Augusta National Golf Club and the Masters after 11 years of substantial change that included the club inviting female members and supporting the game’s growth with two international amateur tournaments. Payne officially retires Oct. 16 when the club opens for a new season. He will be succeeded by Fred Ridley, a former USGA president and U.S. Amateur champion who heads the Masters competition committee. Ridley will be the first chairman who played in the Masters.

LLWS – Greenville advances
Greenville, North Carolina, has advanced to the U.S. title game at the Little League World Series. Greenville pulled out a 2-1, seven-inning win over Lufkin, Texas. The result puts Lufkin into Thursday’s play-in game against Fairfield, which cruised to a 12-2 win over Jackson, N.J.  Tokyo now prepares for Saturday’s International championship game after crushing White Rock, British Columbia, 10-0.

NCAA Rowing – Northwestern crew member who drowned couldn’t swim
A member of Northwestern University’s crew team who drowned in April after falling overboard during a practice didn’t know how to swim. Illinois State Police investigated freshman Mohammed Ramzan’s death and interviewed a teammate who said Ramzan revealed his lack of swimming skills a few days before his death. The information was contained in a state police report obtained by the Chicago Tribune under a Freedom of Information Act request. The report also quotes several team members who said they didn’t have to pass a swim test before being allowed on the water. The guidelines of the sport’s governing body call for participants to demonstrate their swimming ability. A Northwestern spokesman said the team has since instituted a “safety exam” for its members but would not say if that includes a swim test. A crew team with the 19-year-old Ramzan of Auburn, Washington was practicing on the North Shore Channel in the Chicago suburb of Lincolnwood when he fell in.
