Tigers 4, Angels 0 – Farmer shines again for Tigers in 4-0 win over Angels
Buck Farmer outlasted Alex Meyer in an unexpected pitchers’ duel, and Justin Upton hit a three-run homer in the eighth inning to help the Tigers beat the Los Angeles Angels 4-0 on Wednesday night. Farmer worked into the seventh and has not allowed a run in either of his two starts this year.  Farmer (2-0) allowed three hits in 6 2/3 innings, and Detroit pushed across an unearned run in the third. Upton gave the Tigers some insurance with a drive to left off reliever Yusmeiro Petit.  Detroit has won five of six.

Rays 3, White Sox 1 – Rays’ Faria beats White Sox 3-1 in major league debut
Pitching on the sixth anniversary of the day the Rays selected him in the 10th round of the 2011 amateur draft, Jacob Faria walked two and struck out five in 6 1/3 innings, settling down after falling behind three batters into the game to help his team end a season-high four-game losing streak with a 3-1 win over the Chicago White Sox.  Relievers Tommy Hunter, Jose Alvarado and Alex Colome finished the combined four-hitter.

Marlins 6, Cubs 5 – Ozuna, Realmuto homer as Marlins beat Cubs 6-5
Marcell Ozuna hit his 15th homer, J.T. Realmuto went deep and the Miami Marlins hung on to beat the Chicago Cubs 6-5 and avoid a three-game sweep on Wednesday night.  Solo homers by Realmuto in a three-run fourth and Ozuna in the fifth against John Lackey (4-6) helped stake Miami to a 5-2 lead.  Dee Gordon’s aggressive play on the bases made it 6-3, and the Marlins won for the eighth time in 11 games. They also stopped the Cubs’ season-high win streak at five.  Kyle Schwarber homered and had two doubles for Chicago. Ian Happ also went deep. Anthony Rizzo added two hits and two RBI.

Last Night

Warriors 118, Cavaliers 113 – Warriors rally to take 3-0 lead over Cavs
Kevin Durant made a go-ahead 3-pointer with 45 seconds left and the Golden State Warriors took a 3-0 in the NBA Finals by beating the Cleveland Cavaliers 118-113 on Wednesday night.  Durant scored 31 points and Klay Thompson had 30 for the Warriors, who improved to 15-0 in the postseason and are on the brink of the first undefeated finish in the NBA. Stephen Curry had 26 points, 13 rebounds and six assists.  LeBron James had 39 points, 11 rebounds and nine assists for the Cavaliers, and Kyrie Irving added 38 points. Blown out in the first two games, the Cavaliers were much better in Game 3, but just not good enough to beat a team that could go down as one of the best ever.  Golden State closed out the game on an 11-0 scoring run.  Game 4 is Friday night.

Griner, averaging 22 points, was 9 of 13 shooting in the first half for 23 points, but she played limited minutes in the third quarter because of foul trouble. The Fever turned it over 21 times, but made 36 of 38 free throws.

NCAAFB – Stoops abruptly retires
Bob Stoops had been the longest-tenured active head football coach. Not anymore.  Stoops has retired after 18 seasons at Oklahoma. Stoops was 190-48 with the Sooners, winning 10 Big 12 titles and the 2000 national championship. The 56-year-old Stoops says the time is right to step down, but adds his health had nothing to do with his decision.  The Sooners moved quickly to name a replacement, elevating offensive coordinator Lincoln Riley. The 33-year-old Riley becomes the youngest head coach in the Bowl Subdivision.

NCAAFB – First two Spartans appear in court
Two Michigan State football players charged in the sexual assault of a woman in a bathroom during an on-campus party in January have appeared in court. East Lansing District Court records show Donnie Corley Jr. and Josh King — both 19 — were arraigned one day after Demetric Vance. A woman told police she was raped and forced to perform oral sex.

Tennis – Semis set at French Open
The French Open men’s semifinals will have top seed Andy Murray versus No. 3 Stan Wawrinka and fourth seed Rafael Nadal against No. 6 Dominic Thiem. Murray won his quarterfinal match in four sets on Wednesday. Wawrinka and Thiem each earned straight-sets victories, and Nadal was leading 6-2, 2-0 before Pablo Carreno Busta retired because of an abdominal injury. Second seed Karolina Pliskova and No. 3 Simona Halep were quarterfinal winners on the women’s side.

NFL – Manning helping to develop new helmets
Former Indianapolis Colts quarterback Peyton Manning will be advising helmet manufacturer Riddell on product development. The five-time NFL MVP who retired after the 2015 season wore Riddell’s helmets and shoulder pads throughout his career. Now, he will also work with the company as its first brand ambassador through its grass-roots initiative “Smarter Football.”

USA Football starting new development program
USA Football is introducing a new developmental pilot program in 11 youth leagues this fall. Participants in Rookie Tackle leagues will play on a 40-by35-yard field and with six to eight players on each team. Offensive and defensive linemen will start each play in a two-point stance.  Players will compete at multiple positions, and there will be no special team plays. USA Football believes the skill development will be similar to youth baseball leagues.

Sporty hijabs encourage Muslim girls to hit field of play
Muslim student athletes at one U.S. high school no longer have to be slowed down by worries that their headscarves might fall off. Deering High School in Portland, Maine, is providing sport hijabs with the goal of making Muslim girls comfortable. The lightweight scarves stay put and are less bulky than other hijabs, garments that cover the hair and are worn by many Muslim women to express their faith.   The co-captains of the school’s tennis team raised more than $800 online to buy the hijabs. They solicited private donations to avoid criticism for using taxpayer funds on religious apparel, and ended up with enough to outfit all teams. The high school is believed to be the first in the U.S. to provide hijabs for Muslim athletes.
