Last Night
Chicago White Sox 5, Detroit Tigers 3
Washington Nationals 5, Chicago Cubs 4 – 12 Innings

White Sox 5, Tigers 3 – Sale wins MLB-best 11th as White Sox beat Tigers, 5-3
Chris Sale allowed three runs in seven innings to become the first 11-game winner in the majors, leading the Chicago White Sox to a 5-3 victory over the Detroit Tigers Wednesday night.  Rookie Tim Anderson had three hits and three runs scored, and Todd Frazier drove in the go-ahead run as Chicago won two of three in the series between AL Central rivals. Sale (11-2) was 1-2 with a 6.75 ERA in his last four starts after beginning the season by winning his first nine. He survived a shaky third inning in which he allowed all three runs and five of the six hits he surrendered. Nate Jones worked a perfect eighth inning and David Robertson pitched the ninth for his 16th save in 18 chances. Jose Iglesias had a two-run home run for the Tigers. Mike Pelfrey (1-7) allowed four runs in six innings.

Nationals 5, Cubs 4 – F/12 – Nationals outlast Cubs in 12 innings, 5-4
Jayson Werth singled in the winning run with two outs in the 12th inning, giving the Washington Nationals a 5-4 victory over the Chicago Cubs on Wednesday long after starters Stephen Strasburg and Jason Hammel dueled to a scintillating draw. Facing Adam Warren, Werth hit a liner off the wall in center field to score Michael Taylor, who hit an RBI single against Trevor Cahill (0-2) earlier in the inning. Addison Russell had given the Cubs the lead with a run-scoring single off Yusmeiro Petit (2-0) in the top half. A sellout crowd of 42,000, largest of the season in Washington, watched the deciding matchup of a three-game series between first-place teams. Strasburg gave up one run in seven innings for the Nationals, and Hammel did the same for Chicago. After they departed, both teams received shoddy bullpen work.

NHL – Gordie Howe’s life and legacy celebrated at Detroit funeral
Hundreds of people, including Bobby Orr, Wayne Gretzky and Gary Bettman, bid farewell to Gordie Howe at a packed, two-hour funeral service in Detroit. Gordie Howe’s son, Murray, began the service with a eulogy Wednesday that emphasized his father’s toughness and generosity. The service was held at the Cathedral of the Most Blessed Sacrament, about six miles from the home of Howe’s longtime team, the Detroit Red Wings. Dozens of fans stood in line a couple hours before the funeral, which was streamed online by the Red Wings. The cathedral, which hosted Pope John Paul II in 1987, has a capacity of about 900.  Murray Howe has said his father’s remains will be cremated. The family requested donations be made to the Gordie Howe Traumatic Brain Injury Initiative, the Howe Foundation or the Gordie Howe Fund for Alzheimer’s Research.

NHL – Hurricanes acquire Teravainen, Bickell from Blackhawks
The Carolina Hurricanes have acquired forwards Teuvo Teravainen and Bryan Bickell from the Chicago Blackhawks in exchange for two draft picks. Carolina sent a second-round pick in the 2016 draft, the 50th overall, and a third-round pick next year to Chicago, which saves significant salary-cap space. Teravainen had 13 goals and 22 assists for 35 points in his first full NHL season. He had four goals and six assists during the Blackhawks’ Stanley Cup run a year ago. The 21-year-old Finn is considered one of the top prospects in hockey. Bickell, who split time between Chicago and the AHL’s Rockford last season, has one year left on his contract, at a cap hit of $4 million. He was considered a buyout candidate with the window opening Wednesday.

NCAA Football – Permanent lighting coming to Michigan State’s stadium
Michigan State University’s football stadium will install permanent lighting in time for the 2017 season. The university’s governing board on Wednesday approved the new lighting project for Spartan Stadium. The project could cost between $2.2 million and $2.5 million. University president Lou Anna K. Simon says the project won’t cost students anything because the athletic department’s budget is “self-sufficient,” meaning it doesn’t come from the East Lansing school’s general budget. The university currently rents lights from other stadiums, one of the few Big Ten schools to do so. Simon says all Big Ten stadiums are now required to have permanent lights.

NCAA Football – Concussions end career of Notre Dame WR Corey Robinson
Notre Dame wide receiver Corey Robinson has decided to walk away from football because of the lingering effects of a concussion. Robinson, son of NBA Hall of Famer David Robinson, released a statement Wednesday saying he won’t play anymore because he has sustained multiple concussions. He said he will continue to work with the team as a student assistant and is looking “forward to a great senior year.” The 6-foot-5, 215-pound receiver from San Antonio, Texas would have been Notre Dame’s most experienced returning receiver, with 65 catches for 896 yards and seven touchdowns. The Irish lost four of their top five receivers from last season, with Torii Hunter Junior the only returner with more catches than Robinson. Coach Brian Kelly says Robinson sets “a remarkable example” for Irish players.

NASCAR – NASCAR fines Larson’s crew chief, punishes team and owner
Kyle Larson interim crew chief Philip Surgen has been fined $25,000 and the Chip Ganassi Racing team has lost 15 driver points and 15 owner points for infractions at the race in Michigan last weekend. The No. 42 Chevrolet failed a post-race inspection, violating rules relating to actions detrimental to stock car racing and vehicle inspection measurements.

IndyCar – Driver injured in Belle Isle crash in fair condition
Australian driver Matt Mingay remains hospitalized in Detroit over a week after crashing in a trucks race at Belle Isle. Mingay has been at Detroit Receiving Hospital. The Stadium Super Truck Series, citing a hospital spokesperson, said Wednesday that Mingay was upgraded to fair condition. He crashed June 4th and was in serious but stable condition
