Yankees 13, Tigers 4 – Yankees pound Price, Tigers in 13-4 rout
The New York Yankees scored six runs off David Price in the first inning amid swirling snow flurries, and Mark Teixeira added a three-run homer in the seventh to cap a 13-4 rout of the Detroit Tigers on Wednesday night. Price (1-1) allowed eight runs and 10 hits in 2 1-3 innings, his second straight terrible start against the Yankees. Detroit has lost back-to-back games for the first time this season. Adam Warren (1-1) allowed four runs in the bottom of the first, walking four of the first five batters he faced, but he was fine after that. He ended up allowing five hits in 5 2/3 innings, and New York kept padding its lead. The Yankees (8-7) moved above .500 for the first time this year. Gregorio Petit hit a three-run double during that first inning, when Price threw 51 pitches on a 38-degree night at Comerica Park.
Pirates 4, Cubs 3 – White Sox shut out Indians 6-0
Jeff Samardzija threw six shutout innings to outduel Cy Young Award winner Corey Kluber and the Chicago White Sox beat the Cleveland Indians 6-0 on Wednesday. First baseman Jose Abreu’s first-inning solo home run gave Samardzija early run support. The two-out homer was his second in two days. Abreu finished 2 for 4 with three RBIs. Samardzija (1-1) faced the Indians for the first time in his career and allowed six hits, walked two and struck out three. It was Samardzija’s first shutout since going eight innings on Sept. 17, 2014, for the Oakland A’s in a 6-1 loss to the Texas Rangers. Abreu added a two-run double in the seventh to chase Kluber (0-2). Kluber gave up a career-high 13 hits and six earned runs. He struck out six, walked one and had two wild pitches.
Cubs 9, Pirates 8 – Polanco, Worley help Pirates hold off Cubs
Gregory Polanco hit his first home run of the season and Vance Worley got through 5 2-3 shaky innings for his second straight win as the Pittsburgh Pirates held off the Chicago Cubs 4-3 on Wednesday night. Polanco’s leadoff home run in the bottom of the fifth inning off Jason Hammel increased the Pirates’ lead to 4-1. It came after Polanco made a fine running catch of a fly ball hit by rookie star Kris Bryant with the bases loaded to end the top of the inning. Worley (2-1) allowed an unearned run on six hits and five walks. He also struck five in a 106-pitch outing. Tony Watson got the final six outs for his first save of the season and fifth of his five-year career. Hammel (1-1) gave up four runs, three earned, and six hits in five innings with five walks and no strikeouts.

MLB – Tigers reliever Nathan feels `pop’ during rehab appearance
Tigers reliever Joe Nathan left a rehab outing Wednesday after pitching less than an inning, and Detroit manager Brad Ausmus says the 40-year-old right-hander felt a “pop” while throwing a fastball. Ausmus says Nathan was being evaluated. He was pitching for Triple-A Toledo while trying to work his way back from a right elbow strain. Nathan struck out the only batter he faced in Detroit’s season opener this month, but he hasn’t pitched in the majors since. His stint on the 15-day disabled list began April 7. The Tigers signed Nathan before last season, and he struggled in 2014, finishing with 35 saves in 42 chances but posting a 4.81 ERA. Joakim Soria is the closer for Detroit and has converted all five of his chances this season.
MLB – Price pounded amid swirling snow flurries in Detroit
David Price had to battle both the New York Yankees and the swirling snow in the first inning yesterday. Price allowed six runs in the top of the first while snow flurries blew around him. Price hit Jacoby Ellsbury in the chest to start the inning. The New York leadoff hitter fell to the ground in pain before taking his base. Price went on to allow five hits and two walks.

NBA – Bulls’ Mirotic out for Game 3 at Milwaukee
Chicago Bulls forward Nikola Mirotic will miss Thursday’s playoff game at Milwaukee because of an injured left knee. The Bulls ruled Mirotic out for Game 3 and listed veteran guard Kirk Hinrich (left knee) as questionable. Chicago leads the first-round series 2-0. Coach Tom Thibodeau says Mirotic was feeling better Wednesday. He rode the stationary bike during practice and did some light shooting afterward, although he was not moving much or jumping. Mirotic strained his quadriceps and bruised his knee in a scrum for a loose ball with Milwaukee’s Zaza Pachulia late in Monday’s victory, leading to a heated exchange and technical fouls for both players. Pachulia was also called for one about a minute earlier for elbowing Mirotic in the head. The second technical resulted in his ejection.

NFL – Detroit Lions schedule includes 6 nationally televised games
The Detroit Lions schedule includes a franchise-record six nationally televised games, including an appearance on NBC’s “Sunday Night Football” against the Denver Broncos. The team on Tuesday released its full 2015 schedule. It includes a Thanksgiving Day game against the Philadelphia Eagles. Detroit will open the season on the road against the San Diego Chargers on Sept. 13 and begin its home season against the Broncos on Sept. 27. When the Lions host Denver, it will be the first time that “Sunday Night Football” has aired live from Ford Field. Detroit travels to Seattle in Week 4 and New Orleans in Week 15 to face the Seahawks and Saints, respectively, on ESPN’s “Monday Night Football.” The Lions play the Kansas City Chiefs at Wembley Stadium in London on Nov. 1.
NFL – Judge approves potential billion dollar deal
A federal judge has approved a potential $1 billion plan to resolve thousands of NFL concussion lawsuits filed by retired players. The NFL expects 6,000 of nearly 20,000 retired players to suffer from Alzheimer’s disease or moderate dementia someday. The settlement approved by a federal judge would pay them an average $190,000. The awards could reach $1 million to $5 million for younger men diagnosed with Parkinson’s or Lou Gehrig’s disease, or for chronic brain trauma-related deaths. The lawsuits accuse the league of hiding what it knew about concussion risks. The NFL denies the claims.
Olympics – Bird, Papi on board of Boston Olympic bid committee
Larry Bird and David Ortiz are members of the board that will try to bring the 2024 Olympics to Boston. The Boston basketball and baseball stars will be joined by two dozen other athletes and business leaders on the committee. Among them are two-time Olympic medalist Michelle Kwan, 2014 Boston Marathon champion Meb Keflezighi and Celtics Hall of Famer Jo Jo White. Boston was selected as the U.S. bid city. Since its selection, it has been dogged by questions from residents about the potential cost of hosting the Summer Games. The bid committee has committed to a statewide referendum to determine whether there is support. Boston will compete against Rome and Hamburg, Germany, along with expected bids from Paris and Budapest, Hungary. The IOC will make the decision in 2017.

NBADL – Fort Wayne, Santa Cruz set for D-League Finals rematch
The Fort Wayne Mad Ants go for their second straight championship, while the Santa Cruz Warriors will try again for their first when the NBA Development League Finals begin Thursday night. It’s a rematch of last year, when the Mad Ants swept the Warriors 2-0 as part of their league-record, 10-game postseason winning streak. They went 6-0 last year and have won all four games in this postseason, sweeping Maine and Canton. Fort Wayne hosts Game 1 and the Warriors would host Game 2 and 3, if necessary. All the games will be televised on ESPN U. The Warriors have reached the finals in all three seasons of their existence, falling to Rio Grande Valley in 2013.
