NBA – Bulls All-Star guard Butler to get second opinion on knee
Bulls All-Star guard Jimmy Butler is getting a second opinion on his injured left knee. Coach Fred Hoiberg says Butler is scheduled to visit orthopedist Dr. James Andrews and will miss Thursday’s game at San Antonio. Butler sat out Monday’s win over Milwaukee because of swelling in the same knee that had sidelined him for 11 games. He had returned to score 24 points while playing 34 minutes in Saturday’s win over Houston but experienced stiffness in his back the following day. He then developed swelling in his knee on Monday.  Hoiberg says the swelling has gone down, and exams have not revealed any structural damage. The Bulls have been consulting with Andrews since Butler was hurt, and with some lingering pain, he will meet with the doctor.

NFL – Free agent period opens
The window for NFL teams to spend on the acquisition of free agents has opened and the flurry of activity has begun. The defending Super Bowl champ Denver Broncos find themselves without a quarterback now that Brock Osweiler has agreed to a deal with Houston, according to a source familiar with the negotiations.  He went 5-2 as a starter with the Broncos last season when Peyton Manning was injured.  Osweiler was considered the successor to the five-time NFL MVP, who retired on Monday.

NFL – Chiefs busted for tampering
The Kansas City Chiefs have been penalized for having impermissible contact with wide receiver Jeremy Maclin during last year’s free agency. The Chiefs have been stripped of their third-round pick this April and sixth-round pick next year and fined $250,000. Chiefs coach Andy Reid was also fined $50,000 and general manager John Dorsey fined $25,000. Chiefs chairman Clark Hunt said in a statement the club intends to appeal the penalties. NHL – Blues-Blackhawks set for Winter Classic at Busch Stadium
Outdoor hockey is coming to St. Louis. The NHL said Wednesday night before the St. Louis Blues’ game against the Chicago Blackhawks that the teams will play in the Winter Classic at Busch Stadium on Monday, Jan. 2. St. Louis will be the eighth franchise to host the Winter Classic. The game is usually held on Jan. 1, but the league is pushing it back a day as it did in 2012 to avoid going head-to-head with the NFL. It will be the first outdoor game in Blues history.
