(8) Notre Dame 77, (4) Duke – Grant sparks No. 8 Notre Dame to 77-73 victory over Duke
Jerian Grant had 23 points and 12 assists and No. 8 Notre Dame made two shots in the final 67 seconds as the shot clock ran out to beat No. 4 Duke 77-73 Wednesday night.  Grant lost control of the ball, picked it up at the free throw line and got a shot off just in time to give the Irish a 73-70 lead with 67 seconds left. After Quinn Cook hit a pair of free throws, Grant looked as though he was holding for a shot. But he fired it over to Steve Vasturia in the corner for a 3-pointer, giving the Irish a 76-72 lead. Grant thenblocked a layup attempt to end the threat by Duke.  The win keeps Notre Dame (20-2, 8-1 Atlantic Coast Conference) in second-place in the league. l Duke (17-3, 4-3) is off to its worst start in league play since opening the 1995-96 season 3-4.

Kings 4, Blackhawks 3 – Toffoli, Muzzin score late, LA Kings rally past Chicago 4-3
Jake Muzzin scored the tiebreaking goal with 3:37 to play, Jeff Carter had two goals and an assist, and the Los Angeles Kings roared back in the final minutes to snap their four-game losing streak with a 4-3 victory over the Chicago Blackhawks on Wednesday night. Tyler Toffoli tied it with 6:11 left for the defending Stanley Cup champions, who made a dynamic rally in their first game back after stumbling into the break in ninth place in the Western Conference after losing seven of eight. Andrew Shaw scored the tiebreaking goal early in the third period for the Blackhawks, who had won four straight regular-season games over Los Angeles. Jonathan Quick made 26 saves, thwarting a huge Blackhawks surge in front of Los Angeles’ net in the final minute.

Robert Covington scored 19 points, Michael Carter-Williams had 14 points and 10 assists, and the Philadelphia 76ers snapped a six-game losing streak with an 89-69 win over the Detroit Pistons on Wednesday night. JaKarr Sampson had 13 points and Luc Mbah a Moute added 12 for the Sixers (9-37). Carter-Williams, back after missing the Sixers’ last game due to an upper respiratory infection, finished one rebound shy of a triple-double. Greg Monroe led the Pistons (17-30) with 20 points, and Jodie Meeks scored 19 off the bench. Detroit shot just 2 of 20 from 3-point range in a matchup of slumping squads missing their top scorers. The Pistons have lost four straight, and three since leading scorer Brandon Jennings ruptured his left Achilles in a 101-86 loss to Milwaukee on Saturday. Super Bowl XLIX – Countdown continues
It’s cold and flu season and apparently even Super Bowl quarterbacks aren’t impervious to getting sick. Patriots’ signal-caller Tom Brady says he’s been dealing with a cold for about four days now but adds he will be ready for Sunday’s Super Bowl 49.  Seahawks defensive back Richard Sherman reacted by laughing and saying, “His arm doesn’t have a cold.” Brady went through a full practice on Wednesday despite his cold. He’s listed as probable on the injured report with an ankle problem.  Patriots starting center Bryan Stork practiced on a limited basis Wednesday. Stork is listed as questionable for Sunday’s game, along with cornerback Brandon Browner, linebacker Dont’a Hightower, defensive tackles Chris Jones and Sealver Siliga and receiver Brandon LaFell. Safety Earl Thomas is the only player listed as questionable on the Seahawks’ injury report. Thomas participated in full practice as he tries to play through a dislocated shoulder suffered in the NFC title game.

NFL – Feely says Trestman, Cutler lacked leadership
Veteran NFL kicker Jay Feely says the Chicago Bears lacked leadership from quarterback Jay Cutler and former coach Marc Trestman. Feely, who signed with Chicago in December and filled in for the injured Robbie Gould, praised Trestman as a “very smart” offensive coach but said he did not command the locker room in an interview with Sirius XM’s Mad Dog Sports Radio. He said Trestman was “a little awkward” when he addressed the team. Feely also said Cutler “doesn’t like to lead,” which created a vacuum in that area, and that it’s up to the front office to surround him with players who fill that role. Chicago fired general manager Phil Emery and Trestman after going 5-11. The Bears replaced them with Ryan Pace and John Fox.

MLB – White Sox agree to $2M deal with Beckham, cut Viciedo
Infielder Gordon Beckham has agreed to a $2 million, one-year contract with the Chicago White Sox, who cleared a roster spot by designating outfielder Dayan Viciedo for assignment. Beckham has spent almost all of his six big league seasons with the White Sox, who traded him to the Los Angeles Angels on Aug.  21. He made $4,175,000 last season, when he hit .226, and Los Angeles declined to offer him a contract by the Dec. 2 deadline, making him a free agent. Drafted with the eighth pick overall by the White Sox in 2008, Beckham is a career .245 hitter. The 25-year-old Viciedo hit .231 with 21 homers and 58 RBIs in 2014. Chicago has 10 days to trade him, send him outright to the minor leagues or place him on waivers. Viciedo agreed Jan. 12 to a $4.4 million, one-year contract, and Chicago would be responsible for $721,311 in termination pay if he’s released.

Tennis – Australian Open – Williams, Sharapova to meet in Australian Open final
Serena Williams weathered a barrage of big serves and heavy groundstrokes in the first set before beating 19-year-old Madison Keys 7-6 (5), 6-2 to set up an Australian Open final against Maria Sharapova. Williams dominated the second set of the all-American semifinal, breaking Keys’ serve twice. Keys saved seven match points on serve in the penultimate game before Williams closed with an ace on her ninth match point. Sharapova beat fellow Russian Ekaterina Makarova 6-3, 6-2 earlier Thursday. Williams, an 18-time major winner, is back in the final here for the first time since winning her fifth Australian title in 2010.  The win ensured Williams will retain the top ranking, regardless of the outcome against No. 2 Sharapova. The American has a 16-2 record against Sharapova, including the last 15.
