Michigan 68, Rutgers 57 – Michigan keeps Rutgers winless in Big 10 with 68-57 victory
Duncan Robinson scored 10 of his 18 points in the first half to help Michigan build a double-digit lead Wednesday night, and the Wolverines went on to beat Rutgers 68-57. Michigan (16-5, 6-2 Big Ten) has won three straight.  The Scarlet Knights (6-15, 0-8) are winless in the conference. Rutgers had only single-digit scorers until midway through the second half when Corey Sanders dunked to pull his team within five points. Mike Williams scored 17 and Sanders finished with 15 points. Michigan’s Derrick Walton scored 14, Aubrey Dawkins had 11 points, Mark Donnal added 10 while Zak Irvin had eight points, 12 rebounds and eight assists. The Wolverines were sluggish early, getting held scoreless for three-plus minutes and falling behind 6-0. The Scarlet Knights were ahead until there was 5:27 left in the first half when Dawkins tied the game with a 3-pointer.

NCAA Basketball – Maryland makeup game against Michigan St set for Feb 5
Maryland will make up its snowed out home game against Michigan State on Feb. 5. The Terrapins were scheduled to host the Spartans last Saturday before a major snowstorm caused both schools and the Big Ten to postpone the game. The makeup was initially rescheduled for Monday, but officials quickly realized the snow would not be sufficiently cleared by then. Maryland is currently ranked fifth. Michigan State is No. 18. Maryland became the 14th Division I program to reach the 900-win mark last week at Wisconsin.

NCAA – AP sources: Warde Manuel agrees to be Michigan’s AD
Two people familiar with the situation say Warde Manuel has agreed to be Michigan’s next athletic director.  Both spoke to The Associated Press on Wednesday night on condition of anonymity because they were not authorized to share details about the search. Two high ranking Connecticut officials told The AP earlier in the day that the school’s athletic director, Manuel, had been offered the same job at his alma mater. The officials spoke on condition of anonymity because Michigan has made no official announcements about the opening. UConn President Susan Herbst confirmed that Manuel is a finalist for the job at Michigan, adding that she expects an announcement is coming from that school in the next couple days.

She scored six of the first 10 Spartan points of the second half to extend their lead to 47-28. Pistons 110, 76ers 97 – Drummond’s 25 points, 18 boards rally Pistons past 76ers
Andre Drummond had 25 points and 18 rebounds, and the Detroit Pistons rallied to beat the Philadelphia 76ers 110-97 on Wednesday night. Drummond, who came into the game having gone 1 for 14 from the line in the last two games, even hit seven of his 12 free throws. Reggie Jackson added 27 points, while rookie Stanley Johnson had 18 off the bench. Jeremi Grant scored 21 points for the Sixers, while Nerlens Noel had 20. The 76ers played without starters Jahlil Okafor and JaKarr Sampson, who both missed their second game in two nights with the flu. Without them, the Sixers didn’t have the legs to keep up with Detroit down the stretch. A victory would have given Philadelphia its first two-game winning streak of the season.

NBA – Bulls’ Mirotic has appendix out, expected back after break
The Chicago Bulls expect forward Nikola Mirotic to be sidelined until after the All-Star break following surgery Wednesday to remove his appendix. The team says Mirotic was diagnosed with acute appendicitis and that the operation at Chicago’s Rush University Medical Center “went as expected.” Mirotic did not accompany the Bulls to Los Angeles, where they start a seven-game trip against the Lakers on Thursday night. He figures to miss at least eight games, with the All-Star break scheduled for Feb. 12-14. The 6-foot-10 Mirotic has been inconsistent this season, averaging 10.6 points while shooting 38.6 percent. But he played well the past two games against Cleveland and Miami, averaging 16 points and shooting 11 of 20. The Bulls (25-19) are fourth in the Eastern Conference.

NBA – James denies working against coaches
In the wake of the firing of David Blatt as head coach of the Cavaliers and stories that LeBron James is a “coach killer,”, the four-time NBA MVP has expressed his views. Following a team shootaround, James said the criticism that he undercuts coaches is unfair. The 31-year old said he has never disrespected a coach and that he “always respected what they wanted to do.”

MLB – Tigers send Marte to Angels for Eaves in infielder swap
The Detroit Tigers have acquired Kody Eaves from the Los Angeles Angels in exchange for Jefry Marte in a swap of infielders. The 22-year-old Eaves spent last season with Single A Inland Empire, playing in 134 games and hitting .248 with 17 doubles, 11 triples, 11 home runs and 71 RBIs. The 24-year-old Marte was designated for assignment by the Tigers last week after spending most of last season with Triple A Toledo, hitting .275 with 25 doubles, three triples, 15 home runs and 65 RBIs. He appeared in 33 games with the Tigers, hitting .213 with nine runs scored, four doubles, four home runs and 11 RBIs. The deal was announced Wednesday.
