Johnny Cueto tossed a two-hitter and the Kansas City Royals put together a couple of big rallies to beat the New York Mets 7-1 and take a two-games-to-none lead in the World Series. Cueto didn’t allow a hit after Lucas Duda poked an RBI single in the fourth inning. Alcides Escobar and Eric Hosmer each had two hits and two RBIs for the Royals, who went ahead with a four-run fifth off loser Jacob deGrom before scoring three times in the eighth off the Mets’ bullpen.

Pistons 92, Jazz 87 – Pistons top Jazz 92-87, improve to 2-0 on season
Reggie Jackson put Detroit ahead on a driving layup with 17 seconds left, and the Pistons held on to beat the Utah Jazz 92-87 on Wednesday night for their second consecutive victory to start the season. It’s the first time the Pistons have been two games over .500 since they were 33-31 in March of 2009, according to STATS.  The Jazz scored seven consecutive points late in the fourth quarter and took an 87-86 lead on Gordon Hayward’s driving bank shot with 23 seconds to play. After a timeout, Jackson got to the basket quickly and scored to put Detroit ahead to stay. Andre Drummond had 18 points and 10 rebounds for the Pistons, going 8 of 11 on free throws.

Bulls 115, Nets 100 – Bulls beat Nets 115-100 for 2-0 start
Jimmy Butler scored 24 points, Nikola Mirotic had 18 and the Chicago Bulls won for the second time in two nights to open the season, beating the Brooklyn Nets 115-100 on Wednesday night. Pau Gasol added 16 points and Derrick Rose 15 for the Bulls, who followed their season-opening victory over Cleveland by shooting 54 percent and leading by as many as 19. They built a big early lead, blew most of it with a defenseless second quarter and quickly pulled away again in the third.  Brook Lopez had 26 points and Andrea Bargnani had 17. The Nets opened their 40th season in the NBA by falling into a quick 7-0 hole and trailing the rest of the way. They missed all nine 3-point attempts. The Nets had won their first home game in all three seasons since moving to Brooklyn. Seven of their first 10 games this season are on the road, including a back-to-back this weekend at San Antonio and Memphis.

Luis Scola, who didn’t score against his former team, was the only Raptors starter not to reach double figures.  Toronto has won its last five games against Indiana. Paul George had 17 points, 12 rebounds and eight assists for the Pacers, who led by 16 in the second quarter but couldn’t hold on. George Hill scored 19 points, and C.J. Miles had 18.

NFL – QB has meeting coming up with league
Browns coach Mike Pettine says quarterback Johnny Manziel has an “imminent” meeting scheduled with NFL investigators.  The league is looking into whether Manziel violated the league’s personal conduct policy after an incident involving his girlfriend. According to a police report, Colleen Crowley accused Manziel of hitting her and pushing her head against his car’s window during an argument. Pettine says Manziel’s status for Sunday’s game against Arizona is uncertain. The Browns may need the second-year pro as starter Josh McCown is suffering from a sore right shoulder.

NCAA Basketball – Louisville’s Lewis: AD says Pitino `going to be our coach’
Louisville graduate transfer Trey Lewis says athletic director Tom Jurich has assured players that Hall of Famer Rick Pitino will remain the Cardinals coach amid escort allegations. Speaking during the Atlantic Coast Conference media day Wednesday, Lewis says Jurich “explained to us that coach Pitino is going to be our coach.” Lewis also says Pitino has told them “that he’s going to be here for a long time,” so players aren’t worried about his future. Pitino isn’t attending the media day on the advice of counsel. Lewis says he prays for Pitino all the time, but the coach is handling the turmoil well. Allegations emerged earlier this month that an ex-staffer hired an escort and other dancers to strip and have sex with players and recruits from 2010-14.

Olympics – Los Angeles mayor charms Olympic delegates in 2024 bid race
It’s hard to miss Los Angeles Mayor Eric Garcetti in the crowd of conference delegates.  He seems to be everywhere _ meeting the constituents, pressing the flesh, oozing the charm in the lobby, hallways and bars of a Washington hotel. There he is at a reception in downtown Washington, exchanging pleasantries and business cards with everyone around him. This is no ordinary political campaign, though. It’s the real launch of Garcetti’s quest to bring the Olympics to Los Angeles in 2024. Garcetti and Los Angeles bid chairman Casey Wasserman have been in the thick of the action during a gathering of the Association of National Olympic Committees, a conference which has brought more than 1,200 delegates from 200-plus countries to the nation’s capital.
