Tigers 12, Yankees 11 – Yanks blow 6-run lead, lose 12-11 to big league-worst Tigers
Jordy Mercer capped a comeback from a six-run deficit with a game-ending single off Chance Adams in the ninth inning, and the Detroit Tigers overcame six home runs by the Yankees to beat New York 12-11 on Tuesday night.  Brett Gardner and Didi Gregorius each homered twice, and Gleyber Torres and Edwin Encarnación also went deep for the Yankees, whose 276 homers tied Minnesota for the major league lead.  New York, with a 95-51 record to Detroit’s big league-worst 43-100, led 6-0 in the second inning. But the Tigers tied the score with six runs in the third, aided by an error by Torres at second base.  With the Yankees ahead 6-2, Torres dropped a throw from Gregorius at shortstop on what appeared to be an inning-ending double play by Dawel Lugo off Luis Cessa, who had just replaced Nelson Cortes Jr. Christin Stewart hit a sacrifice fly, Travis Demeritte added a RBI single and Grayson Greiner hit a two-run single.  Greiner doubled with one out in the ninth off Chance Adams (1-1) and Mercer’s single to the gap in right-center scored and pinch-runner Willi Castro. Tigers closer Jiménez (3-8) pitched a perfect ninth.

White Sox 7, Royals 3 – Jiménez slam helps White Sox power past Royals 7-3
Rookie Eloy Jiménez hit his first career grand slam, Yoán Moncada launched a monster two-run homer and the Chicago White Sox beat the Kansas City Royals 7-3 on Tuesday night.  Adam Engel added a solo shot for as the White Sox won their second straight, but just their fourth in 14 games.  Adalberto Mondesi, Alex Gordon and Ryan O’Hearn went deep for the Royals on a warm night where the ball carried well and every run was scored on a homer.  Ivan Nova (10-12) allowed three runs in 5 2/3 innings to snap his three-game losing streak. The right-hander yielded six hits, including the Royals’ three solo shots, while walking none and striking out five.

Padres 9, Cubs 8 – 10 Innings – Cubs’ wild-card lead cut, Padres walk off 9-8 in 10th
Manuel Margot drew a four-pitch, bases-loaded walk with one out in the 10th inning and the San Diego Padres overcame an impressive power display by Kris Bryant and Jason Heyward to beat the Chicago Cubs 9-8 Tuesday night.  The Cubs’ lead for the second NL wild-card spot was cut to one game over Milwaukee and two over Philadelphia.  Bryant hit a pair of two-run home runs and Heyward also homered twice and drove in three runs for the Cubs.  After Steve Cishek loaded the bases on a single and two walks in the 10th, the Cubs brought in right fielder Nicholas Castellanos to play first base and give them a five-man infield. It didn’t matter, though as Cishek (3-6) walked Margot to bring in Luis Urias with the winning run.  Urias started the winning rally when he beat out an infield single to shortstop with one out. Austin Hedges and Travis Jankowski walked to load the bases and bring up Margot.  Michel Baez (1-1) pitched the 10th for the win.

MLB – Yelich breaks kneecap, out for season
Brewers star Christian Yelich broke his right kneecap on a foul ball Tuesday night and will miss the rest of the regular season, an injury that overshadowed Milwaukee’s 4-3 win over the Miami Marlins.  The Brewers didn’t say whether the reigning NL MVP might be able to return for the playoffs that begin Oct. 1 if they make it that far. Yelich will return to Milwaukee on Wednesday for further evaluation.  Milwaukee, which won its fifth in a row, began the day two games behind the Chicago Cubs for the second NL wild-card spot.  Yelich fouled a ball off his leg in the first inning. He was down on the ground for several minutes before limping off the field.  Yelich hit .329 with 44 home runs and 97 RBIs along with 30 stolen bases this season. The outfielder was leading the majors in slugging percentage and OPS when he was hurt.

NFL – Antonio Brown faces rape accusations by former trainer
New England Patriots wide receiver Antonio Brown is facing rape accusations by a former trainer. According to a lawsuit filed Tuesday in the Southern District of Florida, Britney Taylor says Brown sexually assaulted her on three occasions. Brown has denied the allegations. Darren Heitner, a lawyer representing Brown, told The Associated Press his client plans to countersue. Heitner said Brown and Taylor had "a consensual personal relationship." Taylor also said in the statement she will cooperate with the NFL and any other agencies. A spokesman for the NFL declined comment, but the Patriots say the league told the team it will launch an investigation.

Olympics – SKorea asks IOC to ban ‘rising sun’ flag at Tokyo Olympics
South Korea has formally asked the International Olympic Committee to ban the Japanese “rising sun” flag at next year’s Tokyo Games, calling it a symbol of Japan’s brutal wartime past.  South Korea’s Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism on Wednesday said it sent a letter to IOC President Thomas Bach expressing “deep disappointment and concern” over Japanese plans to allow the flag in stadiums and other facilities. South Korean Olympic officials last month urged the local organizing committee to ban the flag, but Tokyo organizers responded by saying it was widely used in Japan, was not considered a political statement and “it is not viewed as a prohibited item.” The flag, portraying a red sun with 16 rays extending outward, is resented by many South Koreans, who still harbor animosity over Japan’s 1910-1945 colonial rule of the Korean Peninsula.
