Indians 10, Tigers 1 – Reyes homers in six-run seventh, Indians beat Tigers 10-1
Franmil Reyes hit a three-run homer to highlight a six-run seventh inning, and the Cleveland Indians beat the Detroit Tigers 10-1 on Tuesday night.  The Indians have won 12 straight against the Tigers and are 13-1 against them this season. Carlos Santana had three hits and scored three times for Cleveland, while four pitchers combined for 15 strikeouts. Detroit is now 17-44 at Comerica Park and needs to win five of the final 20 home games to avoid becoming the first team since at least 1908 to lose 60 at home. The Tigers also lost Miguel Cabrera, who left the game after two at-bats with tightness in his left biceps — the same one he tore to end his 2018 season in June. Spencer Turnbull (3-13) allowed four runs and seven hits, needing 98 pitches to get through five innings. He is tied for third in the majors in losses, one behind Brad Keller and Aaron Sanchez.

Twins 3, White Sox 1 – Gonzalez, Schoop homer, Pineda solid as Twins top White Sox
Marwin Gonzalez and Jonathan Schoop hit solo homers in the second inning, Michael Pineda pitched five sharp innings and the Minnesota Twins beat the Chicago White Sox 3-1 on Tuesday night.  Eddie Rosario knocked in an insurance run in the eighth as the AL Central-leading Twins won their third straight to remain 3 1/2 games ahead of Cleveland. Tim Anderson’s 14th homer accounted for the only run off Pineda (10-5), who won his third straight start and fourth straight decision. Lucas Giolito (14-7), who shut out the Twins in a three-hitter while striking out 12 and walking none in Minneapolis last week, wasn’t as crisp this time. The White Sox ace gave up two runs and four hits with three walks in six innings, while striking out nine to reach 203 for the season.

Cubs 5, Mets 2 – Darvish, Báez lead Cubs past Mets 5-2 in series opener
Yu Darvish pitched eight masterful innings, Javier Báez homered and drove in three runs, and the Chicago Cubs topped the New York Mets 5-2 Tuesday night to take the opener of a pivotal three-game series in the National League wild-card race. Báez and Addison Russell each hit a two-run homer off Marcus Stroman. Both middle infielders finished with three hits, and Báez had an eventful game all over the field.  The flashy shortstop made a tough grab to thwart a potential New York rally, contributed three extra-base hits and a walk on a perfect night at the plate — and was thrown out twice being overaggressive on the bases. New York dropped its fourth straight, all at home, and fell three games behind Chicago for the second NL wild card. Philadelphia began the night one game back of the Cubs, who trailed first-place St. Louis by three games in the NL Central.

Golf – Woods has surgery on left knee for minor cartilage damage
Tiger Woods says he has had arthroscopic surgery on his left knee to repair what he describes as minor cartilage damage.  The surgery was not believed to be serious, and Woods says on Twitter he
expects to return to practice. Woods had the surgery last week during the Tour Championship. He won the Masters in April for his 15th major but did not finish among the top 30 in the FedEx Cup who qualified for the final event at East Lake.

Tennis – US Open – Osaka avoids upset, Gauff rallies
There were moments on Tuesday when Naomi Osaka looked nothing like a No. 1 seed or a defending U.S. Open women’s singles champion. She fell behind 3-0 and wasted a match point in the second set while displaying questionable body language. But Osaka eventually found her rhythm and completed a 6-4, 6-7, 6-2 victory over Anna Blinkova despite finishing with 50 unforced errors, more than double Blinkova’s total of 22 in the opening-round match. American Sloane Stephens is out of the U.S. Open in the first round, just two years after winning the title. The No. 11 seed was stunned, 6-3, 6-4 by the 127th-ranked Anna Kalinskaya. Coco Gauff has won her U.S. Open debut with a comeback effort against Anastasia Potopova. The 15-year-old Gauff lost the first set and was down a break before posting a 3-6, 6-2, 6-4 victory. Gauff got a wild-card entry from the U.S. Tennis Association after making a surprising run to the fourth round at Wimbledon last month, her first Grand Slam event.  There were a trio of top-10 upsets on the men’s side as fourth seed Dominic Thiem was dispatched by Thomas Fabbiano in four sets. Eighth seed Stefanos Tsitsipas was beaten in five sets by Andrey Rublev and No. 10 Roberto Bautista-Agut dropped a five-setter to Mikhail Kukushkin.

NFL – Lions sign QB Luis Perez, cut QB David Fales, RB Zach Zenner
The Detroit Lions have signed quarterback Luis Perez and cut quarterback David Fales, giving them another option behind Matthew Stafford. Detroit made the move Tuesday, two days before playing its final preseason game at Cleveland. Later in the day, the Lions released running back Zach Zenner. He ran for 685 yards and eight touchdowns in 36 games over four years in Detroit.  Perez is a former Texas A&M-Commerce standout who was on the Los Angeles Rams’ practice squad for part of last season as an undrafted rookie and was with the Philadelphia Eagles during the offseason. He played for the Birmingham Iron of the now-defunct Alliance of American Football.  Detroit signed Tom Savage to likely be its No. 2 quarterback, but his preseason was impacted by a concussion. The Lions also have quarterback Josh Johnson on the roster. Johnson has started eight NFL games, including three last year with Washington.
