The Chicago Cubs expect Yu Darvish to go on a minor league rehab assignment, assuming he experiences no setbacks after pitching a simulated game on Tuesday. President of baseball operations Theo Epstein says the Japanese right-hander is “just about ready for the next step” after throwing about 55 pitches. The Cubs will see how he feels on Wednesday. Sidelined because of triceps and elbow injuries, Darvish has not pitched since he won at Cincinnati on May 20. NFL – Bears sign first-round draft pick after holdout
The Chicago Bears have signed first-round draft pick Roquan Smith after a holdout by the linebacker over his contract. A person familiar with the situation said Smith has agreed to a four-year contract that guarantees $18.5 million and includes an $11.5 million signing bonus. The person spoke Monday night on condition of anonymity because the deal had not been announced. The Bears have not disclosed terms. Smith was the No. 8 overall selection in April’s draft after starring at Georgia. Smith is the final pick from this year’s NFL draft class to reach an agreement. He and the Bears disagreed over whether the team would be allowed to take back guaranteed bonus money if he was suspended for disciplinary reasons, including a violation of the league’s new rule preventing players from leading with their helmet. Smith participated in offseason activities, but has been absent since Chicago reported to camp on July 19 and has missed two preseason games. The Bears visit Denver on Saturday. Chicago has finished last in the NFC North four straight years and fired coach John Fox and replaced him with Matt Nagy after last season.

The team has announced a new, pre-game program called "Silver Savings" that will run for thefirst hour after the Ford Field gates open. It’s sort of like "Happy Hour" at a bar orrestaurant. The deals include two-dollar sodas, two-dollar hot dogs, three dollar beersand three-dollar well drinks. Beer will be five-dollars at every concession stand once the game starts.

NCAAFB – Maryland parts ways with assistant coach after player death
Maryland has parted ways with its strength and conditioning coach and has acknowledged that “mistakes were made” in the treatment of offensive lineman Jordan McNair, who collapsed on the practice field and subsequently died. Athletic director Damon Evans said Tuesday that Rick Court is no longer associated with the program. Evans added that a decision on the status of head coach DJ Durkin, who is on administrative leave, will come “as additional information comes forward.”  Evans says “mistakes were made” in the treatment of McNair after he fell ill during a conditioning drill. Evans and university President Wallace Loh met with McNair’s parents on Tuesday to apologize.

NCAAWBB – UConn, Lady Vols to renew rivalry in 2019-20, 2020-21
Connecticut and Tennessee plan to face each other in women’s basketball during the 2019-20 and 2020-21 seasons, renewing a storied rivalry that hadn’t been staged since 2007. UConn will host Tennessee during the 2019-20 season, with a portion of the proceeds benefiting the Pat Summitt Foundation and Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame. The two teams will meet again in Knoxville in 2020-21 with portions of the proceeds benefiting the Pat Summitt Foundation, Naismith Memorial Hall of Fame and Women’s Basketball Hall of Fame.  Exact dates for the games haven’t been set. UConn and Tennessee have combined for 19 national titles. The two programs produced one of the fiercest rivalries in college sports in the 1990s and 2000s but haven’t met since 2007. UConn leads the series 13-9.

FIFA – Qatar says Nepali worker dies building World Cup stadium
Qatar says a Nepali worker has died while helping to build a stadium for the 2022 FIFA World Cup in the Arab nation. Qatar’s Supreme Committee for Delivery and Legacy said in a statement Tuesday the 23-year-old worker died at its Al Wakrah Stadium project site.  It offered no cause of death, though the committee said both Qatari and Nepali authorities were notified. An investigation into the death is underway. The committee says it “shares its deepest condolences with the family at this time.” Qatar has faced criticism for worker conditions as it prepares for the World Cup. A British worker, Zachary Cox, died after falling nearly 130 feet in January 2017 at the Khalifa International Stadium. A British coroner blamed dangerous working practices for his death.
