Phillies 3, Tigers 2 – 15 Inn. – Phillies outlast Tigers 3-2 in 15 innings
Scott Kingery tripled to lead off the 15th inning and scored on a single by Rhys Hoskins as the Philadelphia Phillies outlasted the Detroit Tigers 3-2 in a game that finished early Wednesday morning. Kingery, who had struck out four times, hit a drive to deep right off Daniel Stumpf (1-1) to start the winning rally. Hoskins followed with a clean single to right.  Detroit nearly won it in the 14th against Jose Alvarez (1-2), but left fielder Brad Miller threw Nicholas Castellanos out at the plate when he was trying to score on Brandon Dixon’s one-out single. Roman Quinn homered for Philadelphia, which is a half-game behind St. Louis for the National League’s last playoff spot.  Quinn’s two-run homer gave the Phillies the lead in the second. Castellanos tied it with an RBI double in the sixth. The game started after a 38-minute rain delay.

Marlins 5, White Sox 1 – Smith sparkles through seven, Marlins top White Sox 5-1
Caleb Smith retired his first 17 batters and cruised through seven innings of two-hit ball, and the Miami Marlins beat the Chicago White Sox 5-1 Tuesday night.  Curtis Granderson hit a two-run homer to cap Miami’s four-run fourth inning against Dylan Covey (1-6). Harold Ramirez added a solo shot in the fifth as the NL-worst Marlins ended a four-game skid. Smith (6-4) worked perfectly through a depleted White Sox lineup before walking Adam Engel and Leury García with two outs in the sixth. Jon Jay followed by grounding a single to right for Chicago’s first hit and only run. The left-handed Smith struck out nine — including five straight over the fifth and sixth innings — in his fourth start after missing a month with left hip inflammation. Since returning, the 27-year-old is 3-0 with a 3.00 ERA.

Giants 5, Cubs 4 – 13 Inn. – Pablo Sandoval homer in the 13th lifts Giants past Cubs 5-4
Pablo Sandoval homered with one out in the 13th inning, sending the San Francisco Giants past the Chicago Cubs 5-4 on Tuesday night.  Sandoval just cleared the left-field fence with his first-pitch drive off Brad Brach (3-3) that went to replay and was upheld to formally finish the 3-hour, 45-minute game. Sam Coonrod (1-0), San Francisco’s fifth reliever, pitched the 13th for his first career victory. The Giants had missed a chance in the 10th when Sandoval grounded out with the bases loaded. Madison Bumgarner struck out seven over seven innings in another strong start without a win to show for it, then San Francisco won playing its fifth extra-inning game in the last eight and fourth of the homestand. The Giants had a 16-inning victory Bumgarner’s last time out. Jason Heyward hit a tying single in the eighth for the Cubs, who have lost 10 of the last 14 in San Francisco.

NCAA – NCAA punishes DePaul for basketball recruiting violation
The NCAA has suspended men’s basketball coach Dave Leitao for the first three games of the regular season, saying he should have done more to prevent recruiting violations by his staff. The NCAA also put the Big East program on three years of probation, issued a $5,000 fine and said an undetermined number of games will be vacated because DePaul put an ineligible player on the floor. An unidentified former associate head coach is also facing a three-year show cause order for his role in the violations. According to an NCAA infractions committee decision, the associate head coach arranged for the assistant director of basketball operations to live with a prospect to help ensure the player did the work necessary to meet NCAA eligibility requirements. That arrangement violated recruiting rules. DePaul officials did not immediately return emails seeking comment Tuesday.

NFL – Bears begin camp, still with questions at kicker
The Chicago Bears have begun training camp for their 100th season trying to solve an old problem at kicker, and a new one with safety Ha Ha Clinton-Dix out due to a knee sprain. Practices begin Friday as the dominant Bears defense tries to adjust to a new coordinator in Chuck Pagano.

NHL – Calgary Flames set with arena plans to replace Saddledome
The Calgary Flames have a tentative agreement for a new arena to replace the Saddledome.  The city, NHL team and the Calgary Stampede have agreed in principle to terms. The Stampede, a rodeo exhibition, owns the land.  The deal was to be presented to the City Council on Monday and then put to a vote. Calgary citizens would then have a week to voice their opinion before a council vote next week to ratify the deal.  The Saddledome is almost 36 years old. The cost of the event center is $550 million to $600 million. It is to have a seating capacity of about 20,000 for sports and would be the heart of a larger revitalized commercial and residential district.

Cycling – Defending champion crashes again
Defending Tour de France champion Geraint Tomas has crashed for the third time since the start of the race. With the peloton riding at moderate speed, Thomas fell to the ground early during Tuesday’s Stage 16 around Nimes after appearing to hit the curb when going through a curve. The Welshman appeared unscathed and continued racing with a few scratches on his left elbow. The Ineos team leader was then helped back in the main pack by a couple of teammates. Thomas, who is second in the overall standings, 1 minute, 35 seconds behind race leader Julian Alaphilippe, had already been caught in pile-ups during the first and eighth stage of the three-week race.

Olympics – Shaun White pushes forward on Olympic skateboarding track
Shaun White is pressing forward with plans to shoot for the Summer Olympics in skateboarding. White said on NBC’s “Today“ show that he’ll compete at world championships in September “and see what happens“ before deciding whether to try to earn a spot on the U.S. team for skateboarding’s Olympic debut next summer in Tokyo. The three-time Olympic snowboarding champion has won five of his 23 X Games medals on the summer side in skateboarding. But when snowboarding became an Olympic sport, and with no similar option on the Summer Games side, White focused on the Winter Games. He’s expected to focus on the park version, which mixes vertical jumps like those seen on the halfpipe with street features like rails and stairs.
