White Sox 3, Cubs 1 – Jiménez homers in 9th to power White Sox past Cubs, 3-1
Eloy Jiménez hit a tiebreaking two-run homer in the ninth inning in his first game against his first major league organization, helping the Chicago White Sox beat the Chicago Cubs 3-1 on Tuesday night.  The 22-year-old Jiménez was a top prospect for the Cubs before he headlined a rare trade with the White Sox for veteran left-hander José Quintana in July 2017. The Jiménez deal will live on in sports bars all over Chicago for many years to come, and the rookie added another wrinkle with one big swing in his first game at Wrigley Field.  James McCann hit a leadoff single before Jiménez drove a 1-0 pitch from Pedro Strop (1-3) over the wall in left for his 12th homer. Considered one of baseball’s top young sluggers, Jiménez has gone deep six times in his last nine games.  Evan Marshall (3-0) got two outs for the win and Alex Colomé worked the ninth for his 15th save in 15 chances. Four White Sox relievers combined for four scoreless innings after Iván Nova turned in one of his best starts of the season.  The slumping Cubs kicked off a 10-game homestand with their fourth loss in their last five games. Kyle Schwarber connected for his 16th homer and Cole Hamels pitched seven sparkling innings, but that was it for the North Siders.

Tigers 5, Pirates 4 – Tigers slip by sloppy Pirates 5-4, snap 4-game losing streak
Nicholas Castellanos trotted home when a potential double play in the eighth turned into an RBI fielder’s choice thanks to some indecisiveness by Pittsburgh second baseman Adam Frazier, allowing the Detroit Tigers to edge the Pirates 5-4 on Tuesday night.  The Tigers loaded the bases off Kyle Crick (2-3) with one out when Brandon Dixon hit a grounder that rolled under Crick’s glove right to Frazier. Detroit’s shaky bullpen made it stand up, barely. Buck Farmer (4-4) earned the win despite giving up Newman’s tying RBI triple in the seventh. Joe Jiménez survived a bases-loaded jam in the eighth. Shane Greene earned his American League-leading 21st save by getting Josh Bell to hit into a game-ending double play as the Tigers snapped a four-game losing streak.  Miguel Cabrera had two hits in his first start at first base since May 31 as Detroit beat the Pirates for just the second time in their last 10 meetings.

MLB – White Sox plan to extend netting at Guaranteed Rate Field
The Chicago White Sox plan to extend the protective netting all the way to the foul poles at Guaranteed Rate Field, becoming the first major league team to take such a step in the wake of a couple of high-profile fan injuries.  The White Sox and Illinois Sports Facilities Authority, which owns the ballpark, are hoping to complete the project this summer. They say they will announce more details at a later date.  Following recommendations from Major League Baseball, by the start of the 2018 season all 30 teams had expanded their protective netting to at least the far ends of the dugouts after several fans were injured by foul balls in 2017.  But a liner off the bat of Chicago Cubs outfielder Albert Almora Jr. struck a young girl in Houston in May, and a woman was hit by a foul ball from White Sox outfielder Eloy Jiménez in Chicago on June 10. Each of the incidents occurred in the stands beyond the dugout on the third base side.

MLB – Ortiz’s condition upgraded to ‘good’
Former Boston Red Sox star David Ortiz has been upgraded from “guarded“ to “good“ condition by his doctors at a Massachusetts Hospital as he recovers from gunshot wounds. The Red Sox issued a statement on behalf of his wife saying Ortiz continues to make progress after being shot in his native Dominican Republic on June 9. Meanwhile, authorities in Santo Domingo announced the arrest of an 11th suspect. The 10 others have already been ordered to spend a year in preventive detention as the investigation continues.

NBA – Police continue Raptors rally shooting investigation
Police in Canada are looking for a fourth person and haven’t recovered the gun involved in a shooting at a rally for the NBA champion Raptors that left four people wounded and sent thousands fleeing. Police arrested three people who are now facing firearms charges for the shooting, but the shell casings at the scene didn’t match two guns seized.

NBA – Deputy considering lawsuit against Raptors president
A lawyer for a deputy involved in an altercation with Raptors president Masai Ujiri (muh-SY’ oo-JEER’-ee) said his client is considering a lawsuit. The attorney says the deputy has a jaw injury after Ujiri made contact with him as he tried to join his team on the court to celebrate their NBA championship. A sheriff’s spokesman says the deputy was checking court-access credentials after the game Thursday in Oakland when Ujiri shoved the deputy and struck him in the side of head with his arm. The team has said it was cooperating with the investigation and gathering information on its own.

NFL – NFL teams up with NCAA for next round of safety improvements
The NFL is teaming up with the NCAA to make football safer. Two of the league’s top medical experts, Jeff Miller and Dr. Allen Sills, spent Monday and Tuesday in Indianapolis meeting with NCAA officials, college team doctors and trainers. Both told The Associated Press they hope it’s just the first of many meetings. The focus until now has been primarily on concussions. But Miller and Sills are now placing even more attention on the prevention and treatment of lower-body injuries such as sprained ankles, strained hamstrings and knee problems. League officials have been collecting data about cleat traction and how cleats release from different playing surfaces in an effort to keep players healthy. They also believe college researchers can help expedite the process.
