#1 Kansas 92, #10 Michigan State 87 – No. 1 Kansas holds off No. 10 Michigan State 92-87 in opener
Quentin Grimes scored 21 points in his college debut and Dedric Lawson added 20 points and 14 rebounds to lead No. 1 Kansas past No. 10 Michigan State 92-87 in the season-opening Champions Classic on Tuesday. The Jayhawks won their third straight in one of college basketball’s premier events.  Michigan State was led by Joshua Langford with 18 points and Kenny Goins with 17 points and 11 rebounds. The Spartans are now 4-21 all-time against No. 1 teams. The game pitted two power-conference preseason favorites against each other, and the finish was every bit as intriguing as expected. After Kansas was in control for most of the game, the Spartans frantically trimmed a 10-point deficit to 90-87 with 34 seconds left. They had a chance to make it a two-point game when Devon Dotson missed the second of two free throws with 15 seconds left. But Cassius Winston missed a layup for Michigan State, Kansas grabbed the rebound and Grimes sealed it by making 1 of 2 free throws. It sure didn’t look like it would be so close after Kansas withstood Michigan State’s early 3-point flurry. The Jayhawks went on a 13-3 run midway through the first half to turn an 18-16 lead into a 30-17 advantage, extended the lead to 44-27 and never let the Spartans get closer than seven until the final minutes.

#19 Michigan 63, Norfolk State 44 – Teske scores 13, No. 19 Michigan beats Norfolk State 63-44
Jon Teske took a step toward being the aggressive player coach John Beilein wants him to be for No. 19 Michigan. Teske had 13 points, eight rebounds and a career-high four blocks as the Wolverines beat Norfolk State 63-44, giving Beilein his 800th career coaching victory on Tuesday night. The 7-foot-1 Teske showed some flashes of promise last season as Moe Wagner’s backup, averaging 3.4 points and 12.3 minutes a game. Following requests from Beilein and teammates, the junior center was much more aggressive offensively in the opener. Michigan’s Charles Matthews scored 10 points, but was 0 of 4 on 3-pointers and 0 of 5 on free throws. Before the game, the Wolverines raised Final Four and Big Ten championship banners earned by last season’s team.

Notre Dame 84, UIC 67 – Laszewski leads young Notre Dame team past UIC 84-67
Freshmen Nate Laszewski, Robby Carmody and Dane Goodwin were among five Notre Dame players to score in double figures as the youthful Fighting Irish cruised by Illinois-Chicago 84-67 Tuesday night’s season opener.  The 6-foot-10 Laszewski led the way with 12 points and a game-high nine rebounds in 19 minutes off the bench.  Carmody _ who became the first freshman to start an opener for Notre Dame since Torin Francis in 2002 _ added 11 points in 14 minutes. Goodwin finished with 10 points. Junior John Mooney and sophomore D.J. Harvey also scored 10 for the Irish.

WMU 89, UDM 76 – Dugan’s double-double sends WMU past Detroit Mercy 89-76
Seth Dugan scored a career-high 32 points along with a career-high 22 rebounds and Western Michigan beat Detroit Mercy 89-76 in Tuesday night’s season opener for both teams. Nine of Dugan’s 22 boards came on the offensive end where he shot 12 of 18. Dugan became the first player to grab at least 20 rebounds in the Broncos’ program since 1994. Overall, the Broncos had a 56-38 rebounding advantage against the Titans. Josh Davis also had a double-double with 15 points and 10 rebounds.

Jimmy Howard stopped 40 shots before denying Elias Pettersson, Nikolay Goldobin and Bo Horvat in the tiebreaker. Pettersson and defenseman Ben Hutton scored for Vancouver, which had its three-game winning streak snapped. Jacob Markstrom made 28 saves.  Nyquist tied the game at 2 just 1:37 into the third period. His shot went off Markstrom’s pad and in off the leg of Canucks defenseman Troy Stecher for his second goal. NHL – Quenneville dismissed by Blackhawks
The second all-time winningest head coach in NHL history has been shown the door. Joel Quenneville (KWEHN’-vihl) has been dismissed after 10-plus seasons, three Stanley Cups and 452 wins with the Chicago Blackhawks. He was replaced by Jeremy Colliton, who was promoted from Rockford of the AHL to become the team’s 38th head coach. Quenneville was a major part of the greatest decade in franchise history, winning three Cups from 2010-2015 to double the team’s all-time total. The 60-year-old Quenneville is 890-532-77 behind an NHL bench, trailing only Scotty Bowman on the all-time wins list. Colliton was in his second season as head coach of Rockford. He led the IceHogs to a 40-28-4-4 record and a third-round appearance in the playoffs last season.
