White Sox 9, Indians 1 – Anderson chases Bauer after tweet; ChiSox rout Indians 9-1
Yoan Moncada had a two-run homer and four RBIs, and the Chicago White Sox routed Cleveland Indians 9-1 Monday night to stop a three-game losing streak.  Bauer (4-2) matched career highs by allowing eight runs and seven earned runs in five-plus innings, and his ERA rose from 2.45 to 3.42. He had been 3-0 in his previous four starts. Chicago ended his streak of starts allowing four earned runs or fewer at 60, the second-longest in the major leagues since 1970 behind Greg Maddux’s 106 from 1991-94.  Moncada homered in the first, had a sacrifice fly in the third and an RBI double in the fifth. Leury García had three singles, and James McCann added a solo homer for Chicago.  Iván Nova (1-3) allowed one run and eight hits in seven innings for his first win since beating Milwaukee for Pittsburgh on Sept. 21. He had been 0-3 in his prior eight starts.  Jason Kipnis drove in Cleveland’s run with a fifth-inning single and also doubled.

Marlins 6, Cubs 5 – Cubs bullpen goes wild, Marlins rally in 9th to win 6-5
Pedro Strop walked three batters in the ninth inning and the Miami Marlins took advantage, rallying for three runs to pull out a 6-5 victory Monday night that ended the Chicago Cubs’ winning streak at seven games.  Jon Berti hit his first major league homer, a solo shot off Cole Hamels in the sixth to tie it at 3 after the Cubs had jumped ahead 3-0 against Sandy Alcantara in the first.  Chicago led 4-3 entering the ninth, but Strop (1-2) issued two walks and then a yielded a single to pinch-hitter Neil Walker as Miami loaded the bases. Strop walked Rosell Herrera to force in the tying run with nobody out. Berti came home from third to put Miami ahead 5-4 when Miguel Rojas grounded out against Kyle Ryan.  Martin Prado hit a comebacker to Ryan, who looked Walker back toward third. But when Ryan threw to first to retire Prado, Walker sprinted home with the third run of the inning.  Adam Conley (1-3) pitched a scoreless eighth for the win. Sergio Romo worked around a solo homer by Kris Bryant and single by Anthony Rizzo in the 9th to earn his 6th  save.

NHL – Red Wings hire Verbeek as assistant GM
The Detroit Red Wings have hired Pat Verbeek as assistant general manager to work with Steve Yzerman. Verbeek joins Yzerman, the longtime Red Wings captain who was recently named GM, after working for him with the Tampa Bay Lightning. Yzerman stepped down as Lightning GM before the season. The departure of Verbeek led Tampa Bay to promote Al Murray, Jamie Pushor and Stacy Roest to assistant GMs under Julien BriseBois. The Lightning also added Mathieu Darche as director of hockey operations.  Yzerman’s hiring in Detroit moved Ken Holland upstairs as president of hockey operations. Holland has since been linked to the Edmonton Oilers’ GM vacancy

Kentucky Derby – Maximum Security loses appeal, will skip Preakness
The Kentucky Horse Racing Commission has denied the appeal of Maximum Security’s disqualification as Kentucky Derby winner for interference, saying the stewards’ decision is not subject to appeal.  Racing stewards disqualified Maximum Security to 17th place on Saturday and
elevated Country House to first after an objection filed by two jockeys. Stewards determined he impeded the paths of several horses in the race.  Owner Gary West has confirmed to The Associated Press that Maximum Security won’t run in the upcoming Preakness, saying there’s no need without a chance to compete for the Triple Crown.

NASCAR – Truex wins NASCAR race at Dover
Martin Truex Jr. has won a Monday race at Dover International Speedway for the second time in his career, 12 years after capturing his first NASCAR Cup victory at the track on a Monday.  Truex pulled away from the field down the stretch to reach victory lane for the second time in three races. He gave Joe Gibbs Racing its seventh win in 11 starts this season. Alex Bowman finished second for the second straight week, 9 ½ seconds behind Truex after starting in the back of the field because of inspection issues. Kyle Larson, Kevin Harvick and pole-sitter Chase Elliott round out the top five.

Running – Officials: Woman, 76, dies after emergency during race
Officials say a 76-year-old woman has died after having a medical emergency while running a race in southwestern Michigan. The Kalamazoo Gazette reports Kay Caskey of Kalamazoo was participating in the 10-kilometer (6.2-mile) race of the Borgess Run for the Health of It event. Race organizer Blaine Lam says Caskey had completed about 1.2 kilometers (0.75 miles) Sunday before she was taken to a hospital, where she died.  Caskey’s family told the newspaper that she had a heart condition that likely contributed to her death. Medical workers are posted along routes for the race and other related running events, which included the Borgess Half Marathon and the Kalamazoo Marathon.
