NCAAMBB – Beilein leaving Michigan for Cavaliers’ job
Michigan’s John Beilein has agreed to become head coach of the Cleveland Cavaliers. The winningest coach in the history of the Michigan program, Beilein went 278-150 in 12 seasons with the Wolverines and reached the Final Four in 2013 and 2018. He now takes over a rebuilding project in Cleveland. Beilein got a five-year deal with the Cavs, who believe he can make the successful leap from campus. The team has had six other coaches since 2009. Beilein has built a strong reputation for developing young players and teams.

Astros 8, Tigers 1 – Astros extend win streak to 6 with 8-1 win over Tigers
Aledmys Diaz, Robinson Chirinos, Jake Marisnick and Alex Bregman homered for Houston, and the Astros beat the Detroit Tigers 8-1 on Monday night, extending their winning streak to six games.  Brad Peacock (4-2) allowed a run and three hits in five innings for Houston, which has won nine of its last 10 games. The AL West-leading Astros knocked Matthew Boyd (4-3) out of the game in four innings, the shortest start of the season for the Detroit lefty. He allowed three runs and five hits and threw 96 pitches.  Houston got homers from its No. 6, 8 and 9 hitters before Bregman added his 13th of the year. The Astros scored three runs in a three-batter span in the second inning, then added two more in the seventh and three in the ninth.

White Sox 5, Indians 2 – Moncada, López lead White Sox past Indians 5-2
Yoán Moncada hit two of Chicago’s four solo homers and Reynaldo López pitched 7 2/3 effective innings, helping the White Sox beat the Cleveland Indians 5-2 on Monday night.  José Abreu and Welington Castillo also connected for Chicago, which earned its third straight win. The White Sox improved to 4-3 against the Indians this season after they went 5-14 against the Tribe last year.  López (3-4) allowed one earned run and two hits, struck out six and walked two. It was the right-hander’s first win since he fanned 14 in a 4-1 victory over Detroit on April 28.  Francisco Lindor hit his 13th career leadoff homer for Cleveland, which lost for the third time in four games. Lindor also hit a sacrifice fly in the third, singled in the sixth and walked in the eighth, but that was pretty much it for the light-hitting Indians.

MLB – White Sox say Rodon, Jones out for season
Carlos Rodon and Nate Jones will miss the rest of the season with arm injuries, leaving the rebuilding Chicago White Sox without two key pitchers. Rodon is scheduled for elbow-ligament replacement surgery Wednesday in Los Angeles. The left-hander was selected by Chicago with the No. 3 pick in the 2014 amateur draft, but his career has been hampered by injuries.  Jones had surgery Monday to repair a flexor mass tear in his right forearm. The 33-year-old has struggled with injuries since he had a 2.29 ERA in 71 appearances in 2016. While Rodon and Jones have been ruled out for the year, top prospect Eloy Jimenez could return to the White Sox before they go out on a seven-game trip next week. General manager Rick Hahn says Jimenez will begin a rehab assignment with Triple-A Charlotte on Tuesday. The 22-year-old Jimenez sprained his right ankle when he crashed into the wall in left trying to make a play during a 12-11 victory over Detroit on April 26.

MLB – Ross on 10 day IL
Detroit put RHP Tyson Ross on the 10-day injured list, retroactive to Saturday, with right ulnar nerve neuritis. The Tigers also reinstated INF Josh Harrison from the injured list, optioned INF Harold Castro to Triple-A Toledo and recalled RHP Zac Reininger from Toledo.

Dunn’s second goal of the postseason gave the Blues a 2-0 lead and Bortuzzo then added his first career playoff goal late in the period after Couture had tied the game.

NFL – Judge: Kraft’s prosecutors cannot use massage parlor video
A Florida judge has blocked prosecutors from using video that allegedly shows New England Patriots owner Robert Kraft engaging in paid sex at a massage parlor.  Judge Leonard Hanser ruled Monday that Jupiter police did not follow proper procedures after installing the hidden cameras that secretly recorded Kraft visiting the Orchids of Asia Day Spa twice in January. Hanser wrote that detectives did not do enough to minimize the invasion of privacy of customers who did not commit crimes. Prosecutors argued during a recent hearing that the warrant obtained to install the cameras was legal and aimed at stopping a felony-level prostitution operation. They are expected to appeal. The 77-year-old Kraft has pleaded not guilty to misdemeanor solicitation of a prostitute.

NFL – Longtime NFL coach Gunther Cunningham dies at 72
Longtime NFL coach Gunther Cunningham, who emigrated from postwar Germany as a child and then dedicated his life to football, has died after a brief illness. He was 72.  Cunningham’s wife, Rene, said in a statement that he died Saturday.  Cunningham spoke no English when his family arrived in the U.S., and he was ridiculed for both his accent and ancestry as a child. But he developed into a standout prep football player in California and earned a scholarship to play linebacker at Oregon. He eventually coached the Ducks along with Arkansas, Stanford and California before spending time in the CFL. He arrived in the NFL as an assistant with the Colts in 1982, then worked with the Chargers and Raiders before making a name for himself with the Kansas City Chiefs.  He went 16-16 during two years as their head coach.  Cunningham also worked as an assistant with the Detroit Lions from 2009-2016.

Golf – PGA – Justin Thomas withdraws from PGA with wrist injury
Justin Thomas has withdrawn from the PGA Championship with a wrist injury, the first time he has missed a major since his rookie season. Thomas won the PGA Championship two years ago at Quail Hollow, the start of his rise to No. 1 in the world. He now is ranked No. 5. The nature of his injury was not disclosed. Thomas withdrew from the Wells Fargo Championship two weeks ago, hopeful he would be ready for the second major of the year. He said in a text message then that he had not hit balls since the Masters, where he tied for 12th.
