Saints 43, Redskins 19 – Brees breaks NFL passing record in blowout win
Drew Brees became the NFL’s career leader in passing yards while leading the New Orleans Saints to a 43-19 romp over the Washington Redskins. Brees broke Peyton Manning’s all-time record by hitting Tre’Quan Smith for a 62-yard touchdown late in the first half. Brees was 26 of 29 for 363 yards and three TDs in the Saints’ fourth consecutive win.

NFL – Ajayi done for season
The defending Super Bowl champs have lost their No. 1 running back for the season. The Philadelphia Eagles have placed running back Jay Ajayi (ah-JY’-ee) on injured reserve with a knee injury suffered in Sunday’s 23-21 loss to Minnesota. A person familiar with the situation says Ajayi tore an ACL and will miss the rest of the season.  Ajayi has a team-high 184 yards rushing on 45 carries in four games this year, including three starts. He also had 184 yards in three postseason games to help the Eagles win their first NFL championship since 1960.

NFL – Bears place backup linebacker Acho on IR, sign OL Witzmann
The Chicago Bears have placed backup linebacker Sam Acho on injured reserve because of a torn pectoral muscle and signed offensive lineman Bryan Witzmann.  Coach Matt Nagy said last week that Acho will miss the remainder of the season. He was injured against Tampa Bay on Sept. 30.  Witzmann started 13 games for Kansas City last season. He was released by Minnesota on Friday.  The NFC North-leading Bears (3-1) announced the moves on Monday. Chicago — coming off a bye — visits Miami this week.

The Los Angeles Dodgers have advanced to the National League Championship Series for the third straight year by beating the Braves, 6-2 in Atlanta. Manny Machado hit a three-run homer and had four RBIs for the Dodgers, who trailed 2-1 until pinch-hitter David Freese laced a two-run single in the sixth. The Los Angeles bullpen worked 4 2/3s innings of scoreless relief to close out the series in four games.

Red Sox 16, Yankees 1 – Red Sox Brock and roll over Yankees
Brock Holt became the first player in major league postseason history to hit for the cycle as the Boston Red Sox crushed the New York Yankees, 16-1 to take a 2-1 lead in the American League Division Series. NBA – Three players fined for shoving match
The NBA has fined Boston Celtics guard Marcus Smart and forward Aron Baynes and Cleveland Cavaliers forward J.R. Smith for an on-court shoving match in their exhibition game. NBA discipline boss Kiki VanDeWeghe fined Smart $25,000 for escalating the altercation and Smith $15,000 for shoving. Baynes was assessed $15,000 for initiating it.  The league announced the fines Monday. In the first quarter of Saturday’s game in Cleveland, Smith and Baynes got tangled up while boxing out under the Boston basket. Smith gave Baynes a two-handed push, and Smart ran in from near mid-court to retaliate with a shove of his own. Smart was given a technical foul and ejected. Smith was given a technical.

NBA – Suns fire GM McDonough
The Phoenix Suns have fired general manager Ryan McDonough barely a week before the season begins. James Jones and Trevor Bukstein will share the GM duties on an interim basis for the Suns. Jones is the team’s vice president of basketball operations and Bukstein was assistant GM under McDonough, who had been in Phoenix since 2013 and was under contract through 2020. Suns owner Robert Sarver said Monday he made the decision to fire McDonough “after much thought and a long evaluation of our basketball operations.” The Suns took Deandre Ayton with the No. 1 overall pick in this year’s draft and gave Devin Booker a $158 million extension during the offseason. Phoenix has had four straight losing seasons and no playoff berths since 2010.

CFL – Manziel has 250 yards in Alouettes’ 12-6 loss
Johnny Manziel went 18 for 29 for 250 yards and an interception in the Montreal Alouettes’ 12-6 loss to the Calgary Stampeders on Monday. Manziel, who’s still looking for his first CFL victory, had one of his best offensive performances of the season. The loss eliminated Montreal (3-12) from playoff contention and guaranteed the Hamilton Tiger-Cats a playoff berth in the CFL East.  Running back Terry Williams scored his first touchdown of the season for Calgary, which clinched home-field advantage in the West Final. Bo Levi Mitchell was 20 of 34 for 199 yards and three interceptions as Calgary (12-2) extended its winning streak to three games.  Boris Bede kicked two field goals for the Alouettes. Montreal has failed to make the playoffs for a franchise-record four consecutive seasons. The Alouettes have not made the postseason since 2014.
