NFL – National Football League – Week 6
Last Night
Green Bay Packers 23, Detroit Lions 22

Packers 23, Lions 22 – Packers get the calls, Crosby hits late FG to beat Lions
Mason Crosby nailed a 23-yard field goal as time expired, and the Green Bay Packers benefited from some questionable officiating to edge the Detroit Lions 23-22 on Monday night.  Aaron Rodgers completed 24 of 39 passes for 283 yards and two touchdowns, including a beautiful 35-yard throw to Allen Lazard for his first career score. Rodgers linked up with Jamaal Williams for the other score. Williams finished with 104 yards on 14 carries for Green Bay, which captured its first win in five tries against its NFC North rival. The Packers might not have pulled it off if not for two penalties for illegal hands to the face against Detroit’s Trey Flowers, the second of which allowed Green Bay to run the clock down to 2 seconds before Crosby’s game-winner. In both cases, replays showed Flowers’ hands on the neck or shoulder of a Packers lineman. Matt Prater was good from 26, 22, 41, 51 and 54 yards for the Lions (2-2-1). Matthew Stafford finished 18 of 32 for 265 yards and was sacked three times. Kerryon Johnson scored the lone touchdown for the Lions from 1 yard out in the first quarter.

NHL – National Hockey League

Blackhawks 3, Oilers 1 – Crawford lead Blackhawks to 1st win, 3-1 over Oilers
Patrick Kane and Alexander Nylander scored, Corey Crawford stopped 27 shots, and the Chicago Blackhawks beat the Edmonton Oilers 3-1 Monday night for their first win of the season.  Brandon Saad added an empty-netter with 32.7 seconds left to seal the win for Chicago, which went 0-2-1 in its first three games. Crawford lost a bid for his 26th career shutout when James Neal scored his NHL-leading eighth goal on a power-play with 2:11 remaining. Mike Smith finished with 32 saves for Edmonton, which had opened the season with five wins.

NHL – Red Wings executive Jim Devellano undergoes brain surgery
Detroit Red Wings senior vice president Jim Devellano has had surgery to remove a non-cancerous brain tumor.  The surgery was Monday and the Red Wings say it was successful, adding Devellano is resting comfortably in a hospital and is expected to have a full and speedy recovery. The 76-year-old executive is in his 38th season with the franchise and 53rd season in the NHL. He helped the Red Wings win four Stanley Cups after playing a part in the New York Islanders winning three NHL titles. Devellano was inducted into the Hockey Hall of Fame in 2010 as a builder.

Nationals 8, Cardinals 1 – Strasburg Ks 12, Nats top Cards 8-1; 1 win from World Series
The National League Championship Series could end as soon as Tuesday evening. The Nationals have grabbed a three-games-to-none lead with another stifling pitching performance in an 8-1 thrashing of the St. Louis Cardinals. Stephen Strasburg provided the latest gem by a Nats starter, striking out 12 and allowing an unearned run and seven hits over seven innings. Strasburg’s performance leaves Washington starters with an ERA of zero over 21 2/3 innings in the series. He also lowered his career postseason ERA to 1.10 over 41 innings. Howie Kendrick doubled three times and had three RBIs for the Nationals, who are one win away from the first National League pennant in franchise history.

NASCAR – Blaney wins at Talladega
Ryan Blaney has become the second driver to secure a spot on the third round of NASCAR’s Cup playoffs by holding off Ryan Newman at Talladega Superspeedway. Blaney earned his first win of the season by beating Newman in a door-to-door race to the finish line. Blaney was the leader on a restart with two laps remaining, but he fell behind Newman before receiving a push from fellow Ford driver Aric Almirola. It was the sixth-smallest margin of victory ever at the 50-year-old track. Blaney joins Kyle Larson in the round of eight, with six spots sill available. Denny Hamlin was third, followed by Almirola and Michael McDowell as Ford took four of the top five spots.
