Lions 32, Dolphins 21 – Johnson’s 158 yards rushing help Lions beat Dolphins
Kerryon Johnson rushed for 158 yards and the Detroit Lions looked unstoppable Sunday by repeatedly mounting long scoring drives to beat the Miami Dolphins 32-21. Matt Stafford was 18 for 22 for 217 yards and two touchdowns. Detroit had 457 total yards and 248 on the ground, with scoring drives covering 64, 85, 75, 65, 75, 63 and 44 yards.  The Lions (3-3) punted once and had no turnovers to win on the road for the first time. They’ve climbed back to .500 after being outscored 78-44 in their first two games.   Johnson carried 19 times and needed barely a quarter to reach 100 yards. The rookie ran for 24 on Detroit’s first play and found a gaping hole on a draw for a 71-yard gain, the Lions’ longest running play since 2011, to set up a field goal.  Detroit averaged 7.1 yards per rush. Michael Roberts, who had missed the past three games with a knee injury, caught touchdown passes of 15 and 4 yards.

Patriots 38, Bears 31 – Brady throws 3 TDs, Patriots hang on to beat Bears 38-31
The New England Patriots were able to earn their fourth straight win since a 1-2 start, but they came about 36 inches from blowing a lead at the end of regulation. Kevin White was stopped at the New England 1 on the final play after grabbing a 54-yard pass from Mitchell Trubisky, preserving the Patriots’ 38-31 victory over the Bears at Chicago’s Soldier Field. Some Bears players tried to push White across, but he was stopped just short of the goal line. Tom Brady is 5-0 lifetime against the Bears after throwing for 277 yards and three touchdowns despite the absence of Rob Gronkowski, who missed the game with ankle and back issues. Josh Gordon caught four passes for 100 yards, including a 55-yard grab that set up James White’s two-yard touchdown grab with 8:40 remaining. Trubisky was 26 of 50 for 333 yards, two touchdowns and two interceptions for the 3-3 Bears.

Colts 37, Bills 5 – Colts, Luck use efficient air show to blow out Bills 37-5
Andrew Luck threw four touchdown passes and Marlon Mack had his first rushing scores of the season as the Indianapolis Colts blew out Buffalo 37-5 on Sunday. The Colts (2-5) snapped a four-game losing streak and finally won their 300th game since moving to Indianapolis from Baltimore in 1984. Adam Vinatieri scored five points to move within five of breaking Morten Andersen’s NFL career record (2,544). The Bills (2-5) lost their second straight, playing this one without injured
starting quarterback Josh Allen.

Lightning 6, Blackhawks 3 – Lightning beat Blackhawks 5-1, take 33 shots in 2nd
The Tampa Bay Lightning played Sunday as if they were coached by Paul Westhead instead of Jon Cooper. The Lightning set an NHL record by firing 33 shots on Cam Ward in the second period of a 6-3 win at Chicago. Braydon Point had a goal and two assists for the Lightning, who scored three times during their second-period onslaught. Nikita Kucherov (KOO’-cheh-rahv) and Victor Hedman each had a goal and assist for Tampa Bay, which ended up with a team-record 55 shots on goal. NCAAFB – OSU drops to 11th, Clemson back at No. 2
Clemson is back at No. 2 in The Associated Press college football poll behind top-ranked Alabama, moving up to where it started, after a
convincing victory and Ohio State’s first loss of the season. Alabama is a unanimous No. 1, with all 61 first-place votes, for the first time this season. The Tigers trailed only Alabama in the preseason rankings, but a couple of close wins in September _ combined with seemingly impressive performances by other highly ranked teams _ dragged Clemson to as low as No. 4. Coming off a lopsided win against North Carolina State, Clemson rose a spot this week. Notre Dame is No. 3 and LSU is No. 4, setting the stage for a top-five matchup between the Tigers and Crimson Tide in Baton Rouge, Louisiana, on Nov. 3. Both have an open date this week. Michigan is No. 5 and Ohio State dropped to No. 11 after being upset by Purdue. No. 25 Appalachian (ap-ah-LA’-chihn) State is ranked in the AP poll for the first time in school history.

NCAAFB – Saturday – Patterson leads Michigan over MSU
Shea Patterson threw two touchdown passes and No. 6 Michigan earned a desperately needed 21-7 win over No. 24 Michigan State. The Wolverines had lost eight of 10 against their in-state rivals and those setbacks have led to them not winning a Big Ten title since 2004. The Spartans were held to 94 yards of offense and failed to convert any of its 12 third downs. Patterson’s 79-yard pass to Donovan Peoples-Jones put Michigan ahead late in the third quarter.

MLB – Angels hire Ausmus, Reds pick Bell to run their dugouts
The Los Angeles Angels and Cincinnati Reds have hired new managers. Angels general manager Billy Eppler has announced the hiring of Brad Ausmus (AWS’-muhs), who served as his special assistant last season. Ausmus managed the Tigers from 2014-17, going 314-332 and winning the AL Central in his first season with the team. Ausmus replaces Mike Scioscia (SOH’-shuh), who left the club earlier this month after 19 seasons in charge.  David Bell is the Reds’ manager and takes over a franchise that finished last in the NL Central this year at 67-95 under Bryan Price and Jim Riggleman. Bell was a minor league manager for the Reds from 2009-12 and spent three years as the Cardinals’ bench coach. He was San Francisco’s vice president of player development last season. Bell and his father Buddy are the fourth father-son duo to serve as major league managers.

NASCAR – Elliott wins at Kansas
Chase Elliott will carry the momentum into the third round of NASCAR’s playoffs after winning at Kansas Speedway.  The win bookended his victory at Dover, which opened the second round of the playoffs. Kyle Busch was second, followed by Kyle Larson, Erik Jones and Martin Truex Jr.   Also advancing into the third round were Truex, Kyle Busch, Kurt Busch, Kevin Harvick, Clint Bowyer, Aric Almirola and Joey Logano.  Kyle Larson needed a victory to make it into the third round and was frantically chasing Elliott in the closing laps before finishing third. Ryan Blaney, Brad Keselowski and Alex Bowman were also eliminated.
