Texas Tech 63, Michigan 44 – D up: Texas Tech clamps down in 63-44 win over Michigan
More than 24 minutes into the game, the nation’s best defense had yet to allow its 20th point.  Jarett Culver’s 22 points were a mere subplot in third-seeded Tech’s 63-44 takedown of Michigan in the West Region on Thursday night — a victory that set up an intriguing Elite Eight showdown against Gonzaga, which boasts the country’s leading offense.  Only five players scored for Michigan, which was led by its brash playmaker, Iggy Brazdeikis, who finished with 17, most of which came well after the game was out of hand.  Michigan’s other double-figures scorer was Charles Matthews with 12. He’s a senior, though this roster is full of underclassmen, who offer plenty of hope for 2019-20.

Gonzaga 72, Florida State 58
Gonzaga is in the Elite Eight. The Bulldogs beat Florida State 72-58, holding off the Seminoles and advancing to face either Michigan or Texas Tech in the regional final. Rui Hachimura scored 17 points, one of four Gonzaga players with at least 14. Trent Forrest scored 20 for Florida State.

Purdue 99, Tennessee 94 – OT
Purdue is in the South Region final after outlasting Tennessee 99-94 in overtime. Carsen Edwards made two of three free throws with 1.7 seconds remaining in regulation to force OT for the Boilermakers. He followed with six more in the extra session, including a free throw with 6 seconds left to seal the game. The third-seeded Boilermakers face either No. 1 seed Virginia or No. 12 seed Oregon on Saturday.

Virginia 53, Oregon 49
Ty Jerome scored 13 points, including a go-ahead 3-pointer with 3:34 remaining, and No. 1 seed Virginia reached its second regional final in four years with a 53-49 victory over No. 12 Oregon on Thursday night in the NCAA Tournament.

MLB – Major League Baseball – Opening Day

Yesterday
Detroit Tigers 2, Toronto Blue Jays 0 – 10 Innings
Kansas City Royals 5, Chicago White Sox 3
Chicago Cubs 12, Texas Rangers 4

Tigers 2, Blue Jays 0 – 10 Inn – Zimmermann perfect into 7th, Tigers top Blue Jays 2-0 in 10
Jordan Zimmermann was in peak form on opening day.  The right-hander took a perfect game into the seventh inning, Christin Stewart hit a two-run homer in the 10th and the Detroit Tigers beat the Toronto Blue Jays 2-0 Thursday.  Zimmermann, who pitched a no-hitter for Washington on the final day of the 2014 season, came close to bookending it — Hall of Famer Bob Feller threw the only no-hitter on opening day, for Cleveland in 1940.  This bid ended when Teoscar Hernandez reached on a two-out infield single. Hernandez grounded a 1-2 pitch to the shortstop side of second base. Josh Harrison made a sliding play, but his throw to first was late and wide.  That was the only hit Zimmermann allowed in seven sparkling innings. He struck out four and threw only 70 pitches.  Niko Goodrum doubled off Blue Jays right-hander Daniel Hudson (0-1) to begin the 10th, and Stewart homered to right on an 0-2 pitch.  Victor Alcantara (1-0) pitched one inning for the win and Shane Greene finished for a save as Detroit won its opener for the seventh time in eight seasons.

Royals 5, White Sox 3 – Keller pitches Royals past White Sox 5-3 in rainy opener
Brad Keller pitched two-hit ball over seven shutout innings, Adalberto Mondesi tripled twice and the Royals held off the Chicago White Sox 5-3 Thursday after the start of their 2019 opener was delayed nearly two hours by rain.  Eloy Jimenez went 0 for 3 with an RBI in his major league debut for Chicago after signing a $43 million, six-year contract — a record high for a player under club control yet to appear in a big league game. The 22-year-old outfielder was nicked on the left toe by a pitch with the bases loaded in a three-run ninth.  Carlos Rodon (0-1) started for the White Sox and was charged with three runs — two earned — and three hits in 5 1/3 innings. He struck out six and walked one.

Cubs 12, Rangers 4 – Baez hits 2 HRs as Cubs open season with 12-4 win at Rangers
Javier Baez homered twice, Jon Lester won for the first time in his last five opening day starts and the Cubs began the season with a 12-4 victory Thursday at Texas, spoiling the debut of new Rangers manager Chris Woodward in the 26th and final opener in their current ballpark.  Kris Bryant added a two-run shot for the Cubs, opening their fifth season under manager Joe Maddon after four playoff appearances in a row that included the 2016 World Series title.  Elvis Andrus and Nomar Mazara each hit a two-run homer for Texas, which matched its most lopsided loss in a season opener.  Lester (1-0) limited Texas to two runs over six innings to win his first opening day start since 2013 with the Red Sox. The lefty lost Boston’s 2014 opener, and dropped his debut with the Cubs in 2015 before no-decisions the last two years.

Pistons 115, Magic 98 – Ellington, Griffin lead Pistons past Magic 115-98
Wayne Ellington scored 17 of his 25 points in the third quarter and Detroit defeated the Orlando Magic 115-98 in a matchup of teams battling for Eastern Conference playoff positions.  Ellington has played 21 games for the Pistons, averaging 11.3 points and hitting 41.2 percent of his 3-point attempts.  Blake Griffin had 20 points and 10 rebounds for Detroit, which was coming off a 1-4 road trip. Andre Drummond had 18 points, 18 rebounds and six blocks, and Ish Smith scored 15 points off the bench.  The Pistons won their 10th straight home game and moved into a tie with the Brooklyn Nets for the sixth seed in the conference. The Magic had won six straight to get back into playoff contention.

Detroit Red Wings 5, Buffalo Sabres 4 – OT
Chicago Blackhawks 5, San Jose Sharks 4

Red Wings 5, Sabres 4 – OT – Bertuzzi’s OT winner leads Red Wings to 5-4 win over Sabres
The playoffs may be well beyond reach, but the Detroit Red Wings are showing some fight at the end of another disappointing season.  Tyler Bertuzzi and Dylan Larkin each had two goals to lead the Red Wings to a 5-4 overtime win over the Buffalo Sabres on Thursday night. It was Detroit’s fifth win in its last six games.  Filip Hronek also scored for Detroit, and Jimmy Howard made 35 saves.  Bertuzzi scored the winner on a 3-on-2 rush in the extra session. The Red Wings showed patience before finding Bertuzzi alone in the right circle, who buried a one-timer into the net.  Larkin’s two goals gave him 30 for the season.

Blackhawks 5, Sharks 4 – DeBrincat’s 2 goals lead Blackhawks past Sharks 5-4
Alex DeBrincat scored twice to reach the 40-goal mark and the Chicago Blackhawks handed the San Jose Sharks their seventh straight loss, 5-4 on Thursday night. The 21-year-old DeBrincat started a three-goal barrage in the first 11 minutes of the game and added another in the second period. Connor Murphy, Jonathan Toews and Chris Kunitz also scored to give the Blackhawks just their second win in the past six games.  Corey Crawford made 26 saves. The recent slump has put a major dent in Chicago’s playoff hopes. The Blackhawks trail Colorado by five points with five games remaining in the race for the second wild-card spot in the Western Conference.  Tomas Hertl had one goal and two assists in his 400th career game. Lukas Radil, Gustav Nyquist and Timo Meier also scored for San Jose. Martin Jones made 22 saves.

NFL – Eagles acquire RB Jordan Howard in trade with Bears
The Philadelphia Eagles have acquired running back Jordan Howard from the Chicago Bears for a conditional sixth-round pick in next year’s NFL draft.  Howard bolsters an Eagles backfield that includes Josh Adams, who led the team in rushing with 511 yards last season, Wendell Smallwood and Corey Clement.  The draft pick could become a fifth-rounder based on conditions of the trade that was completed Thursday night.  The 24-year-old Howard ran for 935 yards last year, his lowest total in three NFL seasons. But he also tied a career high with nine touchdown runs.  A fifth-round draft pick out of Indiana in 2016, Howard has 13 100-yard rushing games in his career, tied for the third-most in the NFL in that span. He made the Pro Bowl in his first season when he set a Bears rookie record with 1,313 yards rushing.  Howard has rushed for 3,370 yards and 24 touchdowns in his career, and has 72 catches for 568 yards and a TD.
