Cassius Winston scored 23 points, Nick Ward had 21 points with 10 rebounds and sixth-ranked Michigan State blew past No. 19 Iowa 82-67 on Thursday night, extending its winning streak to 13 games. Matt McQuaid added three second-half 3-pointers for the Spartans (18-2, 9-0 Big Ten), who used a 24-2 run just after halftime to secure a school-record 21st consecutive league victory. Tyler Cook scored 11 points in the first four minutes of the second half to give Iowa a 50-42 lead. But he was soon matched by the unflappable Winston, who hit three 3s in a row to help the Spartans retake the lead, 53-50. Ward’s three-point play pushed the run to 14-0 and put Michigan State ahead 56-50. McQuaid’s 3 and three more points from Winston, this time at the foul line, gave the Spartans a 66-52 edge. Luka Garza scored 20 points and Tyler Cook had 17 for Iowa (16-4, 5-4), which won its previous five games. The Hawkeyes entered leading the nation in free throw attempts and makes, but they hit just eight. Michigan State went 20 of 21 from the line.

Jackie Young had a triple-double and Arike Ogunbowale scored 28 points as No. 1 Notre Dame rallied in the second half to beat Tennessee 77-62 on Thursday night. Young had 16 points, 12 rebounds, 10 assists and only two turnovers for the seventh triple-double in Notre Dame history. Ogunbowale scored 24 of her 28 points in the second half to help Notre Dame (18-1) earn its 12th consecutive victory.

Three players scored 14 points and freshman Nia Clouden tied her career high with 11 assists and No. 23 Michigan State took control early Thursday night en route to a 77-60 win over Illinois. Shay Colley, Taryn McCutcheon and Jenna Allen each had 14 points for the Spartans (14-5, 4-4 Big Ten), who improved to 11-0 at home. Brandi Beasley scored 15 points for the Illini (9-10, 1-7), who have lost five straight overall and seven-straight to MSU

Jaelynn Penn scored a career high 28 points, going 6 of 7 from beyond the arc to lead Indiana over Michigan 70-60. Brenna Wise added 12 for the Hoosiers (16-4, 5-3 Big Ten). Naz Hillmon and Nicole Munger each had 16 points for Michigan (12-8, 3-5).

NBA – Pacers lose All-Star Victor Oladipo to season-ending injury
The Indiana Pacers have lost All-Star guard Victor Oladipo with a season-ending ruptured quad tendon in his right knee. Oladipo was injured during Wednesday night’s 110-106 victory over Toronto and left the court on a stretcher with 4:05 left in the first half. Coach Nate McMillan says he is unsure when Oladipo would have surgery or whether he would be ready for the start of next season. Oladipo led the Pacers in scoring at 19.2 points per game, was a first-team all-NBA defensive selection last season and one of the Pacers’ co-captains.

NFL – Pagano sees opportunity of lifetime leading Bears’ defense
Chuck Pagano is ready to embrace the “opportunity of a lifetime” as the Chicago Bears’ defensive coordinator. He inherits a group that ranked among the best in the NFL and helped Chicago win the NFC North after four straight last-place finishes. The Bears made the playoffs for the first time in eight years in their first season under coach Matt Nagy. Pagano vowed not to jam “square pegs into round holes” with a defense featuring three All-Pros, including edge rusher Khalil Mack. He will continue to run the 3-4 as Chicago did under Vic Fangio and combine his philosophy with the system in place.

MLB – Cabrera, Fulmer sound optimistic about their health
Miguel Cabrera and Michael Fulmer expect to be ready for the start of spring training. The two Detroit standouts sound pleased with their progress after injuries interrupted the 2018 season. Cabrera played only 38 games before season-ending biceps surgery. Fulmer has dealt with knee issues. The Tigers are holding their annual winter caravan this week, and both Cabrera and Fulmer were in attendance Thursday. The 35-year-old Cabrera says he’s feeling great and hopes he can stay healthy all season. He’s played more than 130 games just once in the past four years. Fulmer says he’s looked into some mechanical issues that may have caused his knee problems.
MLB – AP source: reliever Brach agrees to $4.35M deal with Cubs
A person familiar with the situation says free agent reliever Brad Brach and the Chicago Cubs have agreed to a one-year contract that guarantees $4.35 million. The person spoke on the condition of anonymity because the deal has not been announced.
MLB – Union: Dead time in free-agent market `threat to our game’
The head of the baseball players’ association expressed concern over a second straight offseason that has seen Bryce Harper, Manny Machado and many other free agents remain without deals less than a month before spring training. Wanting to increase the pace of games and concerned about a drop in offense, management has made proposals to the union that include a pitch clock and rules changes. The players’ association says it will respond, and unlike last year the union appears open to discuss the issues. This year’s free agents still available include Harper, Machado, pitcher Dallas Keuchel and closer Craig Kimbrel.

- Samantha Jenkins poured in a game high 26 points to lead Lake Michigan College to a 69-51 MCCAA Western Conference win over Lansing. The Red Hawks opened the game on a 7-0 run and never trailed. Jayla Bibbs also finished in double figures with 21 points for LMC. Lansing was paced by Jaylynn Williams’ 16 points. The win lifts the Lady Red Hawks to 14-4 on the season and 6-1 in the MCCAA West. Lansing falls to 5-13 and 1-6 in the conference.

Lansing Community College 88, Lake Michigan College 75
- Lansing pulled away late to post an 88-75 win over Lake Michigan College. With the game tied at 71, the Stars outscored the Red Hawks 17-4 down the stretch. Sheddrick Porter finished with 20 points in the loss for LMC, Khaire Williams added 18. Lansing got a game high 25 points from freshman Tevin Ali. With the loss, the Red Harks fall to 3-15 on the season and 1-6 in the MCCAA West. Lansing improves to 7-10 on the season and 5-2 in the conference.
