Michigan (4-0 Big Ten) and Virginia are the only unbeaten teams in the country. The Wolverines jumped to a 7-0 lead and coasted past the overmatched Illinois (4-12, 0-5). Charles Matthews added 14 points for the Wolverines, and Jon Teske had 13 points and 11 rebounds. Ayo Dosunmu scored 23 points for Illinois. Giorgi Bezhanishvili added 15, and Trent Frazier had 13.

Iman Shumpert had 13 points and De’Aaron Fox had 12 points and six assists for the Kings, who had lost five of six. Stanley Johnson had 16 points off the bench, Reggie Bullock added 15 points and Andre Drummond had 12 points and 11 rebounds for the Pistons, who have lost four straight and 9 of 11. Griffin, Detroit’s scoring leader, got the night off after playing 37 minutes Wednesday night in a 113-100 loss at the Los Angeles Lakers. He did not have a rebound in that game, the first time that had happened in his eight-year pro career.

Arike Ogunbowale scored 30 points and No. 1 Notre Dame overcame 18 turnovers to beat No. 2 Louisville 82-68 on Thursday night. Brianna Turner added 16 points and Jackie Young had 14 for the Irish (15-1, 3-0 Atlantic Coast Conference). They regained the top spot in The Associated Press poll this week and won their eighth straight since an 89-71 loss to Connecticut. Asia Durr had 29 points for Louisville (14-1, 2-1), and Bionca Dunham added 10. The Cardinals cut a 10-point deficit to two twice in the fourth quarter, the last at 68-66 with 1:48 remaining, but Turner’s basket and Ogunbowale’s 3-pointer propelled the Irish to a 14-2 finish

NCAAFB – Harbaugh hires Gattis away from Alabama to be Michigan’s OC
Michigan hired Josh Gattis away from Alabama to be Jim Harbaugh’s offensive coordinator. Harbaugh gave Gattis a title Thursday no one had on his staff last year when he said playing-calling was a collaborative effort. The 34-year-old Gattis was a co-offensive coordinator last season for the Crimson Tide. Nick Saban has called Gattis an outstanding recruiter with a promising future. Gattis was Penn State’s wide receivers coach and passing-game coordinator and led the program’s offensive recruiting efforts the previous four seasons. Gattis, who is from Durham, North Carolina, was an All-ACC safety at Wake Forest. He had a brief career with the Chicago Bears. Harbaugh lost assistants Greg Mattison and Al Washington to rival Ohio State on consecutive days earlier this week.
NCAAFB – Salem taking over as Michigan State offensive coordinator
Brad Salem is taking over as Michigan State’s offensive coordinator after coach Mark Dantonio rearranged several roles on his staff. The Spartans did not announce any firings or new hires Thursday, but several assistants will be in different jobs. Salem moves from quarterbacks coach to offensive coordinator, and he’ll also coach running backs. Dave Warner and Jim Bollman, who have been co-offensive coordinators for Michigan State, will no longer have that duty. Warner will coach quarterbacks, and Bollman will coach the offensive line. Offensive line coach Mark Staten will move to tight ends and will help coordinate special teams. Assistant defensive backs coach Don Treadwell will move to wide receivers, and wide receivers coach Terrence Samuel will help coach the secondary. Michigan State struggled offensively last season and went 7-6.
MLB – Shane Green, Tigers agree to $4M deal, avoid arbitration
The Tigers have avoided arbitration with reliever Shane Greene, agreeing to a $4 million, one-year contract with the right-hander. Greene went 4-6 with a 5.12 ERA and 32 saves last season and earned $1.95 million. He appeared in 66 games and struck out 65 in 63 1/3 innings. Greene was mostly a starter in his debut season with the New York Yankees in 2014, and again with Detroit in 2015, but he was exclusively a reliever in 2017 and 2018. He blew six saves last season and allowed 12 home runs.
