MLB – Major League Baseball
Last Night
Kansas City Royals 9, Detroit Tigers 2
Chicago White Sox 4, New York Yankees 1
Chicago Cubs 2, New York Mets 1 – 11 Innings (Game 1, suspended game from Tuesday)
New York Mets 10, Chicago Cubs 3 – (Game 2)

Royals 9, Tigers 2 – Mondesi homers, drives in 4 as Royals trounce Tigers 9-2
Adalberto Mondesi homered for the second straight game, this time a two-run shot as part of a four-RBI performance, and the Royals beat the Detroit Tigers 9-2 on Wednesday to sweep a two-game set.  Mondesi made his big league debut as a 19-year-old during the 2015 World Series, but he struggled the past two seasons to stick with the Royals. He seems to have broken through, though, as Kansas City begins a massive rebuilding project based around talented prospects like him.  Danny Duffy (8-11) allowed both of his hits and his only run in the first inning, when Mikie Mahtook drove in Jose Iglesias with a two-out single. The left-hander labored through the frame but breezed the rest of the way, striking out six while working around a trio of walks.

White Sox 4, Yankees 1 – LaMarre, Lopez team up on Yankees; White Sox win 4-1
The Yankees’ pursuit of the Boston Red Sox got stalled by Ryan LaMarre and Reynaldo Lopez.  LaMarre homered and drove in a career-best four runs, Lopez stifled the Yankees again despite diminished velocity and the Chicago White Sox beat New York 4-1 on Wednesday night.  LaMarre hit a pair of run-scoring doubles off starter CC Sabathia (7-5), then lifted a leadoff shot against Chad Green in the seventh. The 29-year-old had one previous homer this season and one all of last season between Triple-A and the majors.  Chicago has won five of six and 11 of 15. The rebuilding White Sox took two of three for their first series victory in the Bronx since 2005, and also have won five straight road series overall for the first time since 2004-05. That, despite being well outside the AL postseason picture.

Game 1: Cubs 2, Mets 1 (11) Game 2: Mets 10, Cubs 3 – Frazier hits grand slam, drives in 5 as Mets pound Cubs 10-3
The Chicago Cubs were pounding out lopsided victories and squeezing out tight games while putting together their longest winning streak of the season.  Todd Frazier brought it to a screeching halt. Even so, the Cubs weren’t complaining.  Frazier hit a grand slam and drove in a season-high five runs to lead the New York Mets to a 10-3 victory over Chicago on Wednesday, avenging a tough loss earlier in the day.  The Cubs had won a season-high seven in a row after pulling out a 2-1 victory earlier Wednesday on Ben Zobrist’s RBI single with the bases loaded in the 11th. That game was suspended in the top of the 10th because of rain the previous night.  The scheduled meeting didn’t go nearly as well for the NL Central leaders. They couldn’t close out a perfect homestand after sweeping the first four games against Cincinnati and taking two more from New York. But they felt charged and ready for a season-long 11-day, 11-game trip that starts Thursday at Atlanta.  Frazier gave New York a 4-0 lead in the first inning with his drive against Alec Mills and added an RBI single in a two-run ninth.  Jason Vargas (5-8) won his third straight start. The Mets pounded out 16 hits and avoided a season sweep after dropping the first six games against the NL Central leaders.

MLB – Pujols sidelined
Los Angeles Angels slugger Albert Pujols is likely to miss the rest of his 18th major league season after undergoing surgery on his left knee.  The Angels announced Wednesday that Pujols has undergone arthroscopic knee surgery. Recovery time is typically at least six weeks, and the Angels’ season likely will be over in 4 ½ weeks. Pujols is sixth in baseball history with 633 career homers after passing Ken Griffey Jr. last month. He is seventh in history with 1,982 career RBIs, just behind Lou Gehrig (1,995) and Barry Bonds (1,996), and close to becoming only the fifth member of the 2,000-RBI club.
NFL – Rodgers gets a raise
Aaron Rodgers is once again the NFL’s highest paid player after agreeing to a new deal with the Green Bay Packers. The two-time NFL MVP and the Packers have agreed on a four-year extension worth $134 million, with $100 million guaranteed. The deal keeps Rodgers under contract through the 2023 season. Rodgers’ new annual average salary of $33.5 million per year would eclipse Atlanta Falcons quarterback Matt Ryan’s five-year extension worth $30 million a year.

Serena Williams set up a third-round showdown at the U.S. Open against her older sister by hitting 13 aces and overwhelming 101st-ranked Carina Witthoeft of Germany 6-2, 6-2 in a little more than an hour.  This Williams vs. Williams matchup will be the earliest they’ve faced each other at a Grand Slam tournament in 20 years.  Venus Williams advanced to the third round with a straight-sets victory earlier Wednesday. Serena leads Venus 17-12 overall and 15-10 at majors.

NCAA – Ohio State trustees to be updated on doctor abuse inquiry
Ohio State University trustees are set to receive an update on the investigation into a former team doctor now accused of sexual misconduct against scores of male athletes and other students.  A law firm hired to investigate the claims has heard from more than 100 former students sharing firsthand accounts of sexual misconduct by Richard Strauss. The allegations date from 1979 to 1997, most of his two decades at Ohio State. University officials’ responses to any concerns raised also are under investigation.  University Provost Bruce McPheron is scheduled to provide an update on the nearly 5-month-old investigation to the trustees’ Audit and Compliance Committee meeting Thursday on campus.
