Ward stopped 37 shots in his return to PNC Arena, Jonathan Toews scored a deflected goal and Alex DeBrincat added a goal, but the Blackhawks lost their eighth straight. Carolina’s Scott Darling made 33 saves against his former team, in regulation coming up with a slick glove save to stop Patrick Kane on a 2-on-1 and making a left pad save to stop Nick Schmaltz on a breakaway.

NHL – Seattle group remains confident arena will be ready for 2020
The potential owners of an NHL expansion franchise in Seattle remain confident arena renovations will be completed in time for the 2020-21 season.  NHL Seattle said Monday that ownership recognizes the ability to start play in 2020 is dependent on KeyArena renovations being finished on time. The group says it will work closely with the NHL to keep the league informed of progress. Deputy Commissioner Bill Daly told reporters in Toronto that he expects the Board of Governors to decide on Seattle expansion during a meeting in Sea Island, Georgia, on Dec. 3-4. But Daly said he’d heard the arena was targeted for completion in November 2020, which would be too late because the league does not have interest in the team beginning play at an alternate rink.

MLB – MLB rookie honors
Los Angeles Angels two-way star Shohei Ohtani has been voted American League Rookie of the Year after becoming the first player since Babe Ruth with 10 homers and four pitching wins in the same season. Atlanta outfielder Ronald Acuna Jr. was an overwhelming pick for the National League honor, easily beating Washington outfielder Juan Soto.

NCAAMBB – Duke is on top of latest poll
Duke has supplanted Kansas atop the new AP Top 25 poll after its dominating win against Kentucky, giving the Blue Devils a record number of appearances at No. 1. The Blue Devils jumped from fourth to first in Monday’s first regular-season poll. That allowed Duke to set a record with its 135th week at No. 1, breaking a tie with UCLA for most all-time.  Duke claimed 48 of 65 first-place votes after beating then-No. 2 Kentucky by 34 points in their opener. It was impressive enough to bump the preseason No. 1 Jayhawks, who fell to No. 2 despite a quality win of their own against then-No. 10 Michigan State.  Gonzaga was third, followed by Virginia and Tennessee to round out the top 5.

NCAAWBB – Women’s top 5 remain unchanged
Lindsay Whalen has Minnesota in the AP Top 25 women’s basketball poll.   The first-year coach became the 39th person to play and coach a team that was ranked when her alma mater entered the women’s basketball poll Monday at No. 25. Whalen is the 12th to accomplish the feat at the same school. Minnesota won its opening game in front of about 14,000 fans Friday night.  The top five remained unchanged with Notre Dame, UConn, Oregon, Baylor and Louisville leading the way. The Irish are no longer a unanimous choice by the 31-member national media panel. They lost one first-place ballot to Oregon, which rallied to beat No. 18 Syracuse at home on Saturday. Top 25 teams went 39-1 against unranked opponents this past week with then No. 21 Duke suffering the only loss with a defeat at Northwestern.
