Jake Arrieta pitched the sixth no-hitter in the majors this season and second against the Los Angeles Dodgers in 10 days, leading the Chicago Cubs to a 2-0 victory Sunday night. Arrieta (17-6) became the first 17-game winner in the big leagues by throwing baseball’s third no-hitter in less than three weeks. Astros right-hander Mike Fiers blanked the NL West-leading Dodgers 3-0 on Aug. 21. Los Angeles had never been no-hit twice in a season. Arrieta struck out a season-high 12 _ one off his career high _ and walked one to help the Cubs snap a four-game skid on the last night of their six-game West Coast trip. He finished August with a 6-0 record, tying Boston’s Joe Kelly as the only pitchers with that many wins in the month.

Toronto’s 45 home runs in August are the most in the majors. The Blue Jays have hit three or more in six of their past 11 games. Mark Buehrle (14-6) allowed two runs in six-plus innings as the Blue Jays improved to 21-5 in August, matching the team record for wins in a month. Toronto went 21-9 in May 2014.

The Kitasuna Little League team, also the winner in 2001 and 2012, gave Japan its 10th title. Pennsylvania scored 10 times and sent 14 batters to the plate in the bottom of the first after falling behind 2-0. But Japan, which had given up a total of 10 runs in its other tournament games, responded with seven runs in the second, four in the third inning and five in the sixth. Masafuji Nishijima had four hits and six RBIs, and Shingo Tomita hit two home runs. Tokyo’s third pitcher, Nobuyuki Kawashima, held Pennsylvania in check most of the game, giving up just one run and two hits over five innings.

Tennis – US Open – Sharapova withdraws
The U.S. Tennis Association says Maria Sharapova has pulled out of the U.S. Open on the eve of the tournament because of a leg injury. It’s the second time in three years that the 2006 champion has withdrawn from the year’s final Grand Slam event. Sharapova has not played a match since losing to Serena Williams in the Wimbledon semifinals in July. She withdrew from hard-court tournaments in Toronto and Cincinnati in August, citing a right leg strain.

NFL – Goodell, Brady due in court for ‘Deflategate’ case
New England Patriots quarterback Tom Brady and NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell are expected in court after failing to settle the “Deflategate” scandal.  Both sides are to appear before a federal court judge in Manhattan Monday for a status conference. The dispute centers on the legality of the NFL’s four-game suspension of Brady after Goodell concluded he conspired with Patriots ball handlers to deflate footballs at January’s AFC championship game victory. The NFL Players Association has asked the judge to void the suspension.  Federal Judge Richard Berman has urged both sides to agree to a deal. He warned the NFL earlier this month he can erase Brady’s suspension if it fails to negotiate a deal.  Berman has said he hopes to decide the case by Sept. 4 if there’s no settlement.

NFL – Bears terminate cornerback Tim Jennings’ contract
The Chicago Bears terminated two-time Pro Bowl cornerback Tim Jennings’ contract Sunday and placed safety Ryan Mundy on season-ending injured reserve because of a hip problem. The 31-year-old Jennings had a guaranteed base salary of $4.4 million this year. Jennings led the NFL with nine interceptions in 2012 and had four in 2013, earning Pro Bowl honors in both seasons. He started all 16 games last season and had arthroscopic knee surgery in the offseason.  The Bears also moved Kevin White, the wide receiver from West Virginia drafted in the first round, to the reserve/physically-unable-to-perform list because of a stress fracture in his left shin; waived tight ends Kevin Greene and Chris Pantale, wide receivers Jeremy Kelley, Levi Norwood and John Chiles, safety Malcolm Bronson, cornerback Al Louis-Jean, offensive tackle Cameron Jefferson, defensive end Olsen Pierre, and long snapper Rick Lovato; and terminated running back Daniel Thomas’ contract. The moves cut the roster to 76.

IndyCar – Scott Dixon snatches IndyCar championship away from Montoya
Scott Dixon captured a fourth IndyCar championship by winning the season finale Sunday to snatch away the title from Juan Pablo Montoya.  Montoya led the points from the season-opening race right until the final lap Sunday. But he finished the race in sixth, which allowed Dixon to tie him in the standings.  Dixon was awarded the title based on wins; Sonoma Raceway was his third victory, while Montoya had only two. Montoya’s day was made difficult on lap 39 when he hit Team Penske teammate Will Power. It sent him to pit lane for repairs and he was mired in the middle of the pack for the bulk of the race.  Although he picked off a few positions, his hard charge to move up to fifth fell one position short.

Arena Football – San Jose four-time champion
Erik Meyer led San Jose to its fourth ArenaBowl victory, throwing four touchdown passes and running for two more scores in the SaberCats’ 68-47 victory over the Jacksonville Sharks.
