Indians 9, Tigers 3 – Indians tag Verlander, top Tigers again 9-3 for 9th straight
Lonnie Chisenhall had four hits, including one of Cleveland’s four home runs off Justin Verlander in the fifth inning, and the streaking Indians won their ninth straight game Sunday by beating Detroit 9-3 to remain unbeaten in nine meetings with the Tigers this season. Juan Uribe, Tyler Naquin and Mike Napoli also went deep for the Indians. Chisenhall was 4 for 4 with a triple and three RBIs. Cleveland overcame three homers by former teammates, including two by Victor Martinez, to sweep Detroit for the third time this year. The Indians have outscored the Tigers 60-20 in nine games. Only once before had Verlander allowed four homers in a start _ also against the Indians in 2007. According to the Elias Sports Bureau and Fox Sports Detroit, he became the first pitcher in franchise history to give up four in one inning.  Verlander (7-6) allowed eight runs on nine hits and two walks in 4 2/3 innings.

White Sox 5, Blue Jays 2 – Sale pitches White Sox past Blue Jays 5-2
Chris Sale pitched eight innings of two-run ball to become the majors’ first 13-game winner, and the Chicago White Sox beat the Toronto Blue Jays 5-2 Sunday. Tim Anderson and J.B. Shuck homered to help Chicago take two of three from slumping Toronto, which has dropped five of seven. The White Sox returned to .500 (38-38) with their fifth win in seven games. Sale (13-2) allowed five hits, struck out seven and walked two in his fourth straight victory. The ace left-hander matched his win total from all of 2015 when he was 13-11.

Marlins 6, Cubs 1 – Fernandez fans 13 and Marlins take series from Cubs, 6-1
Jose Fernandez delivered another gem at Marlins Park, allowing one run in seven innings and striking out 13 Sunday to help Miami beat the faltering Chicago Cubs 6-1. The Marlins won three of four from the injury-depleted Cubs, who went 1-6 for the week but still have baseball’s best record. Fernandez improved his career record at home to 24-1 with a 1.48 ERA, and this year the right-hander has been pretty good everywhere _ he’s 10-3 with a 2.28 ERA and 138 strikeouts. Giancarlo Stanton doubled and scored the go-ahead run in the sixth for the Marlins, who went 7-3 on their homestand. At 41-35, they’re six games above .500 for the first time since June 2012, their first season in Marlins Park.

NCAA Women’s Basketball – Past few days `difficult’ for former Tennessee coach Summitt
The family of Pat Summitt says the last few days have been difficult for the former Tennessee women’s basketball coach as her Alzheimer’s disease progresses. Amid reports of Summitt’s failing health, her family issued a statement Sunday asking for prayers and saying that the 64-year-old Summitt is surrounded by the people who mean the most to her. They also asked for privacy.  Former Tennessee player Tamika Catchings was flying to Knoxville instead of returning to Indiana with the WNBA’s Fever to visit the coach. Summitt stepped down as Tennessee’s coach in 2012, one year after announcing her diagnosis of early onset dementia, Alzheimer’s type. Summitt went 1,098-208 with eight national titles. She has the most career wins of any Division I men’s or women’s basketball coach.

NASCAR – Stewart takes first
Tony Stewart has earned his first Sprint Cup victory since 2013. Stewart ended an 84-race losing streak by holding off Denny Hamlin over the final lap of Sunday’s event at Sonoma Raceway. The 45-year-old Stewart took the lead on fuel strategy during a caution with 24 laps to go and held on after another yellow flag stalled the race. The final restart came with 14 laps remaining before he fought off a trio of Toyota drivers for his third career victory at Sonoma. Joey Logano was third, followed by pole-sitter Carl Edwards and Martin Truex Jr.

Hurley entered the tournament as the 607th-ranked player before posting a three-shot win over Vijay Singh. The 34-year-old Hurley closed with a 2-under 69 for a 17 under total in his hometown tournament. The Naval Academy graduate earned over $1.2 million and a spot in next month’s British Open.

Golf – LPGA – Ko leads the way
Top-ranked Lydia Ko is the winner of the LPGA’s Walmart Northwest Arkansas Championship.  Ko followed Saturday’s 62 with a 3-under 68 to end up 17 under, three shots ahead of Morgan Pressel and Candie Kung. Soccer – Chile beats Argentina on penalty kicks
Chile has won the Copa America by defeating Argentina 4-2 on penalty kicks following a scoreless tie at the Meadowlands.  Francisco Silva converted Chile’s final shot to give La Roja their second straight Copa America title. Argentina star Lionel Messi put his penalty kick over the crossbar. The five-time FIFA Player of the Year has won four Champions League titles and eight La Liga crowns with Barcelona but has never taken a trophy with Argentina’s senior team.  Messi said during an interview following the loss that he will retire from international competition with the Argentine National Team.

Olympics – IOC official says unclear doping lab will be ready in time
A top International Olympic Committee official says it’s unclear if the suspended anti-doping laboratory for the Rio de Janeiro Olympics can be re-opened before the games start in under six weeks. Olympic Games Executive Director Christophe Dubi says “this is something that is doable, but there are a number of steps that need to be taken.” The World Anti-doping Agency announced Friday it had suspended the lab. Dubi said Sunday the suspension was for “wrongly interpreting” test results and producing “false positives.” Thousands of blood and urine tests will need to be shipped abroad if the lab remains closed. Officials of the lab said Friday they expected “operations to return to normal in July.” Brazil’s anti-doping authority, known as ABCD and run by the sports ministry, shared the same view.
