Royals 2, Tigers 1 – F/13 – Cuthbert’s RBI single in 13th lifts Royals past Tigers, 2-1
Cheslor Cuthbert singled home Lorenzo Cain in the 13th inning to lift the Kansas City Royals to a 2-1 win over the Detroit Tigers on Sunday. The Royals won six of seven on their homestand and have the best home record in the American League at 25-8. Salvador Perez led off the 13th with a single to right off left-hander Kyle Ryan (1-2), who was just promoted from Triple-A Toledo. Cain ran for Perez and advanced to second on Miguel Cabrera’s error on Ryan’s pickoff attempt. After Kendrys Morales was walked intentionally walked, Paulo Orlando moved the runners with a sacrifice bunt. Ryan walked Brett Eibner intentionally to load the bases. Chien-Ming Wang (4-0) allowed one hit in 1 2/3 innings to pick up the victory.

Indians 3, White Sox 2 – F/10 – Ramirez’s 10th inning single gives Indians 3-2 win
Jose Ramirez’s two-out single with the bases loaded in the 10th inning scored Rajai Davis as the Cleveland Indians completed a three-game sweep of the Chicago White Sox with a 3-2 win on Sunday. Ramirez’s hit off David Robertson (0-1) skipped past first baseman Jose Abreu and into right field for Cleveland’s second last-at bat win of the series. Cleveland won Friday night’s game when Carlos Santana hit a leadoff homer in the ninth off Nate Jones. The Indians, who lead the AL Central, are 7-2 against the White Sox, including six straight wins. Davis doubled to start the 10th, his fourth hit of the game. Following Jason Kipnis’ sacrifice, Francisco Lindor and Mike Napoli were walked intentionally to load the bases. After Santana fouled out, Ramirez came through with his winning hit. Dan Otero struck out Abreu with a runner on 1st to end the 10th.

Cubs 10, Pirates 5 – Prospect Contreras homers in 1st at-bat, Cubs sweep Pirates
Prized prospect Willson Contreras crushed the first pitch he saw in the major leagues for a two-run home run, Kyle Hendricks struck out a career-high 12 in six innings and the Chicago Cubs completed a sweep of the fading Pittsburgh Pirates with a 10-5 victory Sunday night. Contreras, called up from Triple-A on Friday, pinch hit for Hendricks in the sixth and sent A.J. Schugel’s changeup an estimated 415 feet to center. The cheering crowd didn’t let up until the 24-year-old Venezuelan catcher obliged with a curtain call. Kris Bryant and Anthony Rizzo hit consecutive home runs in the third and Javier Baez added a solo shot for the Cubs, all off rookie Jameson Taillon (1-1). Addison Russell hit a two-run shot in the seventh for the Cubs, who have eight homers in two games. Josh Harrison’s solo home run was the lone blemish off Hendricks (5-6), who walked none and allowed seven hits.

NBA – 2016 NBA Finals (Best of 7)
Last Night
Cleveland Cavaliers 93, Golden State Warriors 89                              (CLE wins 4-3)

Cavaliers 93, Warriors 89 – Cavaliers make history in earning first NBA title
Cleveland’s championship drought is over. LeBron James had a triple-double, Kyrie Irving’s 3-pointer with 53 seconds left put Cleveland ahead to stay and the Cavaliers beat the Golden State Warriors 93-89 in Game 7 of the NBA Finals on Sunday night. It’s the first major championship for the city of Cleveland since the Browns in 1964. James had 27 points, 11 rebounds and 11 assists, and Irving finished with 26 points for Cleveland _ which erased a 3-1 series deficit to win the title. Draymond Green had 32 points, 15 rebounds and nine assists for the Warriors, whose bid for back-to-back titles was thwarted. Golden State won an NBA-record 73 games in the regular season, then fell short in the playoffs. They went scoreless in the last three minutes of the final game.

NHL – Blackhawks announce 3-year deal with forward Nick Schmaltz
The Chicago Blackhawks agreed to a three-year contract with forward Nick Schmaltz on Sunday. The Blackhawks selected Schmaltz in the first round of the 2014 draft. The deal helps ease the sting from the loss of Teuvo Teravainen, who was traded to Carolina on Wednesday so the Hurricanes would take Bryan Bickell’s contract off Chicago’s hands. The 20-year-old Schmaltz helped North Dakota win the NCAA title last season. He had 11 goals and 35 assists in 37 games.

Golf – PGA – US Open – DJ wins first major
Dustin Johnson no longer has to wear the unwanted title of “best golfer never to have won a major.”  Johnson, who tied for fourth at the Masters, finally has earned his first major with a three-shot victory at the 116th U.S. Open at Oakmont.  The long-hitting Johnson wrapped up a sparkling week with a birdie on the final hole to finish a final-round 1-under 69. He finished four under for the tourney — just one of four players to post sub-par scores for the Open. That was even being assessed a one-shot penalty following his round for slightly moving his ball on the fifth green. Johnson had a history of 18th hole disappointments in major tournaments. Not this time. Scott Piercy, Jim Furyk and Shane Lowry tied for second. Lowry started the final round with a four-shot lead. But the Irishman ballooned to final-round 6-over 76. Defending U.S. Open champ Spieth finished tied for 37th at 9-over. Masters champion Danny Willett also tied for 37th.

Golf – LPGA – A playoff for the women
After finishing in a tie after 72 holes Carlotta Ciganda and Sei Young Kim needed an extra hole to determine the winner of the Meijer LPGA Classic. The duo completed play at 17-under and on the first playoff hole Kim was the winner. The win is the second of the year for Kim and fifth in her career. In playoffs she is 3-0. Defending champion Lexi Thompson had a 1-over-72 on the last round to finish three shots back of the lead.

Golf – Symetra – Jackie Stoelting wins second straight Symetra Tour event
Jackie Stoelting won consecutive Symetra Tour events for the second straight year Sunday, taking the Four Winds Invitational by a stroke. Stoelting finished with a 5-under 67 for a 7-under 209 total at Blackthorn Golf Club in South Bend. She earned $22,500 to jump from sixth to second on the money list with $52,946, with the top 10 at the end of the season earning LPGA Tour cards.

NCAA Basketball – Ex-Michigan State standout Appling arraigned on gun charge
Former Michigan State University basketball standout Keith Appling is facing a charge of carrying a concealed weapon.  He was charged yesterday by the Wayne County Prosecutor’s Office following his arrest early Saturday morning during a traffic stop.  Detroit police say Appling had a handgun hidden under the driver’s seat when he was pulled over at 1:30 in the morning at Hanna Street and Seven Mile Road.

NASCAR – Sam Hornish Jr. wins Xfinity race in Iowa
Sam Hornish Jr. led 183 of 250 laps in his first race of 2016 and cruised to victory in Sunday’s NASCAR Xfinity race at the Iowa Speedway. Hornish, driving the No. 18 car for Joe Gibbs Racing, picked up his first win in two years, which also came at Iowa’s 0.875-mile oval.  Hornish was briefly pushed by Ty Dillon and Brad Keselowski on a restart with 7 laps to go. But Hornish held on to the outside groove for his fourth career Xfinity series win. Dillon was second, followed by Keselowski, Daniel Suarez and Alex Bowman. Pole sitter Erik Jones had issues with the No. 20 car all afternoon. He finished 27th.
