Springer singled in the first and scored on Anibal Sanchez’s wild pitch, and Springer hit his second home run in as many days leading off the third. Altuve made it 5-0 with a two-run single in the fourth. Jarrod Saltalamacchia and J.D. Martinez hit solo homers for Detriot. Ian Kinsler had a two-run homer and the second baseman made a heads-up play in the fifth when he let a Tyler White pop up in the infield fall in front of him in order to throw out Colby Rasmus out at second. Mike Fiers (1-1) gave up four runs and seven hits in 5 2/3 innings with five strikeouts.

Rays 3, White Sox 2 – Moore strikes out 10, Rays beat White Sox 3-2

After Enny Romero worked a perfect inning, Alex Colome got the final five outs for the Rays’ first save this season.  Jose Quintana (1-1) gave up three runs, seven hits and had six strikeouts in six innings for Chicago, which has lost two straight after winning five in a row. The left-hander entered with a four-game winning streak dating to last season.

Nolan Arenado hit two home runs, Tyler Chatwood threw seven shutout innings and the Colorado Rockies beat the Chicago Cubs 2-0 on Sunday. Brian Elliott made 44 saves, keeping St. Louis in the game during Chicago’s strong second period. Kane, the NHL’s leading scorer this season and one of the favorites for league MVP, got four minutes for a high stick on defenseman Alex Pietrangelo, and St. Louis made the most of the chance to go in front. NASCAR – Carl Edwards wins Sprint Cup Series race at Bristol Speedway
Carl Edwards avoided tire issues that hampered his teammates and took off on the final restart to win the NASCAR Sprint Cup Series race Sunday at Bristol Motor Speedway.  Starting on the pole for the second straight week, Edwards led 276 of 500 laps in Joe Gibbs Racing’s No. 19 Toyota en route to his first victory of the season and fourth on the half-mile oval. Dale Earnhardt Jr. was second, followed by Kurt Busch, Chase Elliott and Trevor Bayne. Edwards’ flawless day contrasted the right-front tire problems endured by teammates Kyle Busch, Matt Kenseth and Denny Hamlin after all of them started in the top five. Busch, the defending series champion and points leader, had trouble throughout the race. He exited after his car smacked the wall on Lap 259 and sustained heavy damage, failing to finish a race for the first time since June at Michigan.

NASCAR – Super Bowl champ Manning attends NASCAR race at Bristol
For one day, Dale Earnhardt Jr. was the second most popular guy at a NASCAR race. That’s what happens when the race is in Tennessee and former Volunteers great and Super Bowl champion quarterback Peyton Manning is in the house. Manning was a guest of the NASCAR driver for Sunday’s Sprint Cup Series race. The five-time NFL MVP got big cheers when he was introduced at the prerace drivers meeting and was understandably in demand while making his way around the Bristol Motor Speedway infield. Fans who normally crowd behind Earnhardt’s hauler seemed more focused on Manning as they screamed and shoved items at him to autograph. One admirer even
yelled at the recently retired champion to return to Rocky Top as a coach.

Golf – PGA – Grace earns title
South Africa’s Brandon Grace had five birdies on the front side en route to a 5-under 66 to win the RBC Heritage tournament.  It was Grace’s first win on the PGA tour and his 11th worldwide. Grace finished 9-under par for a two-shot win over Luke Donald and Russell Knox.  It’s Donald’s sixth top-three finish since 2009 at Harbour Town.

Golf – Champions – Austin wins in a playoff
Woody Austin tied the Mitsubishi Electric Classic record with an 8-under 64 and beat Wes Short Jr. with a par on the second hole of a sudden-death playoff. The 52-year-old Austin has two victories in the last three events on the Champions Tour.  Short could have avoided the playoff, but he missed a 6-foot birdie putt on No. 18 to tie Austin at 11-under.

NCAA Women’s Basketball – UConn coach Auriemma hospitalized with undisclosed illness
UConn women’s basketball coach Geno Auriemma has been hospitalized with an undisclosed illness. The school released a statement saying the 62-year-old Auriemma had boarded a plane Saturday morning at Bradley International Airport in Windsor Locks, but decided to deplane because he was not feeling well. The school says he was taken to a hospital for observation and is resting comfortably. The Hall of Fame coach guided the Huskies to an unprecedented 11th national title this month. But, he missed the victory parade in Hartford last weekend and did not accompany the team when it was honored by lawmakers at the state Capitol this week, because he was feeling ill.     He attended the WNBA draft Thursday, but did not speak with reporters. Auriemma is 955-134 in 31 seasons at UConn.

Running – Champs back in Boston but top Americans are resting for Rio
With the top American marathoners resting for the Rio Olympics, Neely Spence Gracey could be the best U.S. hope for a podium finish in Boston today.  The 26-year-old Coloradan will be making her marathon debut.  But the marathon has always been a part of her life. Her father, Steve Spence, was a bronze medalist at the 1991 world championships. He finished 19th in Boston in 1989 and was the No. 2 American overall.  And Neely was born while her father was running Boston in 1990.  Defending champions Lelisa Desisa and Caroline Rotich will lead the field of more than 30,000 runners across the start in Hopkinton this morning for the 26.2-mile trek to Boston’s Back Bay.
