Cubs 7, D’Backs 3 – Arrieta homers, pitches 7 innings to lead Cubs over Arizona
Jake Arrieta homered and pitched seven innings, helping the Chicago Cubs finish off an impressive first week by beating the Arizona Diamondbacks 7-3 on Sunday. Chicago is tied with Cincinnati for the best record in the NL at 5-1. The Cubs host the Reds in their home opener Monday night at Wrigley Field. Arrieta (2-0) allowed three runs and eight hits, striking out six. The reigning NL Cy Young Award winner gave himself a boost with a two-out, two-run homer in the second inning off Shelby Miller (0-1). Arrieta hit two home runs in 2015 and has three in his career.

Indians at White Sox, PPD – Indians at White Sox postponed because of rain
The Chicago White Sox’s game against the Cleveland Indians on Sunday has been postponed because of rain. The game will be made up on May 23 as part of a doubleheader that will begin at 4:10 p.m. The second game will start at 7:10 p.m. or 30 minutes after the conclusion of the first game.  The Indians have had three games rained out so far this season. The White Sox and Indians split the first two games of their series. Cleveland won 7-1 on Friday before losing 7-3 on Saturday. The White Sox play the Minnesota Twins on Monday in their home opener. The Indians are off on Monday before beginning a series against Tampa Bay.

Yankees at Tigers, PPD – Yankees at Tigers postponed by rain
The Detroit Tigers’ game against the New York Yankees on Sunday night has been postponed because of rain. With light rain falling and no end in sight, the game was called off several hours before the scheduled first pitch. Justin Verlander had been scheduled to make his second start of the season for the Tigers, while the Yankees planned to send Masahiro Tanaka to the mound. A makeup date was not immediately announced. The teams aren’t scheduled to meet again in Detroit this season. The Tigers host the Pittsburgh Pirates on Monday, while the Yankees have a day off.

MLB – White Sox put Adam Eaton on paternity list
The Chicago White Sox recalled right-handed pitcher Michael Ynoa from Double-A Birmingham and put outfielder Adam Eaton on the paternity list before their postponed game against the Cleveland Indians on Sunday. Eaton left the team on Saturday, when his wife Katie gave birth to their first child, Brayden. Manager Robin Ventura said he expects Eaton to join the White Sox on their trip to Minnesota. The White Sox play the Twins in their home opener on Monday. Eaton is off to a strong start at the plate, going 9 for 20 with a double, triple and two runs scored in five games. Ynoa has yet to pitch in the majors and threw one scoreless inning in Double-A. He went 0-2 with a 2.61 ERA, six saves and 40 strikeouts in 38 innings with Class A Winston-Salem last season. The White Sox acquired Ynoa from Oakland in 2014. “I’m still in shock,” Ynoa said. “I’m happy to be here and thanks to the White Sox for giving me this opportunity.”

NFL – Former Saints lineman shot and killed
Former New Orleans Saints player Will Smith was shot in the back and side, according to a warrant read in court Sunday night before a magistrate set a $1 million bond for the man accused of killing him. Police say 34-year-old Smith was killed in a case of road rage by a man who had rear-ended his car. They arrested 28-year-old Cardell Hayes on a charge of second-degree murder. Prosecutors have 60 days to decide whether to bring that charge against Hayes. Hayes’ Humvee H2 rear-ended Smith’s Mercedes G63 around 11:30 p.m. Saturday in the upscale Lower Garden District, pushing it into a Chevrolet Impala driven by two of Smith’s acquaintances. Police say the two argued, and Hayes shot both Smith and Smith’s wife, Racquel. She was taken to a hospital with a leg wound.

Golf – Masters – Englishman Willett wearing green jacket after Spieth loses 5-shot lead
Jordan Spieth suffered a monumental collapse on the back nine of the 80th Masters, handing the green jacket to Danny Willett of Sheffield, England.  Willett shot a final-round 5-under 67 to finish five under par to win by three shots. Spieth looked to be in the driver’s seat after he took a five-shot lead into the back nine. But the defending champion bogeyed 10 and 11 and then took a quadruple 7 on the 12th hole. Spieth finished with a final-round 1-over 73 that included a 41 on that fateful back nine. Spieth finished tied for second with Lee Westwood. Even more painful for Spieth was going to Butler Cabin and to the 18th green ceremony to present the green jacket to Willett. “It was a really tough 30 minutes for me that hopefully I never experience again,” Spieth said. Dustin Johnson, Paul Casey and J.B. Holmes finished tied at 1-under. Only six golfers broke par at the 80th Masters.

Solomon Hill had 13 points and 12 rebounds for Indiana while George Hill had 18 points, Ian Mahinmi had 16 and Paul George had 15. The Pacers jumped ahead 17-5 in the first quarter and led by as many as 42 points. Sean Kilpatrick led the Nets with 26 points. Markel Brown had 18 points and 11 rebounds. NHL – Red Wings’ Datsyuk plans to retire from NHL after playoffs
Detroit Red Wings center Pavel Datsyuk is expected to retire from the NHL after the playoffs.  Dan Milstein, his agent, confirmed Datsyuk’s plans Sunday. Milstein says Datsyuk wants to return to Russia to reunite with his teenage daughter and to play in the Kontinental Hockey League for at least one season. Milstein says Datsyuk’s plans will not be final until after the postseason when he meets with Red Wings general manager Ken Holland along with owners Mike and Marian Ilitch. The 37-year-old Datsyuk has one season left on his three-year, $22.5 million contract. He will count $7.5 million against Detroit’s salary cap next season even if he leaves. Datsyuk discussed his plans for the first time in an interview with the Detroit Free Press published Sunday.

NHL – Sens’ GM stepping down
Bryan Murray is stepping down as general manager of the Ottawa Senators. Murray, who has been battling cancer, will be replaced by assistant general manager Pierre Dorion.
