Golf – The Masters – Monkey off, green jacket on Garcia’s back
Sergio Garcia is no longer in the conversation of outstanding golfers to never win a major. Not after he slipped his arms into a green jacket on Sunday. Garcia has won the Masters in comeback fashion, beating Justin Rose in a sudden-death playoff. The 37-year-old Spaniard trailed Rose by two shots with six holes remaining before ending his two decades of close calls and major meltdowns in major tournaments. Rose sent his first playoff drive into the trees on 18 and managed to punch out before failing to sink a 15-foot par putt. That opened the door for Garcia to win the title by two-putting from 12 feet out. Garcia wasted no time wrapping up the Masters, sinking a birdie putt before crouching in disbelief while hearing chants of “Ser-gee-oh! Ser-gee-oh!” from the gallery. Rose patted his opponent on the cheek before they embraced. Garcia and Rose began the final round tied for the lead before carding 3-under 69s to finish at minus-9. Charl Schwartzel closed with his second straight 68 to finish third at 6 under, one shot ahead of Matt Kuchar and second-round co-leader Thomas Pieters. Paul Casey’s 4-under total was one better than Rory McIlroy and Kevin Chappell.

Red Sox 7, Tigers 5 – Red Sox rally with 4 in 8th inning, beat Tigers 7-5
Sandy Leon broke an eighth-inning tie with a two-run single, part of a four-run rally that lifted the Boston Red Sox to a 7-5 victory over the Detroit Tigers on Sunday. The Red Sox rallied four times from one-run deficits, finally taking the lead against the Detroit bullpen. The Tigers led 4-3 in the eighth when Bruce Rondon (0-1) allowed a leadoff walk to Mookie Betts and a single by Chris Young. A throwing error on Young’s single by left fielder Justin Upton left runners at second and third. After an intentional walk, Kyle Ryan came in and walked pinch-hitter Brock Holt to force in the tying run. Leon followed with a line drive to center, and Boston led 6-4. Matt Barnes (1-0) got the win in relief. Craig Kimbrel allowed a run in the ninth but recovered for his second save of the season. He’s converted 21 chances in a row.

Twins 4, White Sox 1 – Sano, Polanco homer to help Santana, Twins top White Sox 4-1
Miguel Sano and Jorge Polanco homered to back Ervin Santana’s six scoreless innings as the Minnesota Twins beat the Chicago White Sox 4-1 on Sunday. Santana (2-0) held the White Sox to two singles and lowered his ERA to 0.69. Minnesota, which finished with the worst record in the majors last season, has the top mark in the American League at 5-1 after taking two of three from Chicago. Jose Quintana (0-2) regrouped from a rough opening day start to allow two runs and strike out seven in 6 1/3 innings. Quintana, who has been the subject of trade speculation for the rebuilding White Sox, gave up six runs and three homers against Detroit in his season debut.

Cubs 7, Brewers 4 – Schwarber, Zobrist homer in Cubs’ 7-4 win over Brewers
Kyle Schwarber and Ben Zobrist hit home runs and Jake Arrieta threw seven strong innings as the Chicago Cubs took the weekend series from the Milwaukee Brewers with a 7-4 victory Sunday. Chicago scored four runs in the top of the first off Brewers starter Zach Davies (0-2) on a two-run double by Addison Russell and a two-run triple from Jason Heyward. Arrieta (2-0) allowed just three hits with 10 strikeouts over seven innings, the only blemish on his line a three-run home run hit by Ryan Braun in the third. The right-hander retired 13 of the 14 batters following Braun’s home run, including a stretch of five consecutive strikeouts. Schwarber connected for a solo homer off Davies in the second, while Zobrist increased Chicago’s lead to 6-3 with a blast off reliever Carlos Torres as part of a two-run seventh.

Red Wings 4, Devils 1 – Red Wings beat Devils 4-1 in last game at Joe Louis Arena
Riley Sheahan had two goals and Henrik Zetterberg scored in his 1,000th NHL game, helping the Detroit Red Wings beat the New Jersey Devils 4-1 Sunday in a party-like atmosphere for the final game at Joe Louis Arena. Zetterberg put Detroit up 3-0 midway through the second period following Sheahan’s and Tomas Tatar’s goals in the first. Sheahan didn’t have a goal in his first 79 games this year but scored his second of the game with 2:33 left to bring fans to their feet, where they stayed for the game. Jimmy Howard stopped 24 shots for the Red Wings, who failed to make the playoffs for the first time since 1990 to end a postseason streak that tied for the third longest in league history. Cory Schneider made 31 saves for the Devils, who haven’t earned a spot in the postseason since advancing to the 2012 Stanley Cup Finals.  After the game, nearly 90 former players and coaches were on hand in a ceremony to close the storied arena.

Russell Westbrook has added to his NBA resume. Westbrook broke Oscar Robertson’s 55-year-old mark with his 42nd triple-double of the season while leading Oklahoma City’s 106-105 win at Denver. Westbrook poured in 50 points, grabbed 15 rebounds, dished out 10 assists and won it with a buzzer-beating 3-pointer that eliminated the Nuggets from the playoff race. Meanwhile, the Cleveland Cavaliers have fallen into a tie with Boston for the No. 1 seed in the east with two games. The Cavs coughed up a 26-point, fourth-quarter lead in a 126-125 overtime loss in Atlanta.

NASCAR – Changed track, same result at Texas with Jimmie Johnson win
Jimmie Johnson has earned his first win of the Monster Energy season, going from the back of the field to Victory Lane at Texas Motor Speedway.  The seven-time Cup champion charged under Joey Logano with 16 laps to go and claimed his 81st career victory. Johnson had to start at the back of the 40-car field because of a tire change after a spin in qualifying.  It was Johnson’s seventh victory at Texas, six coming in the last 10 races there.  Points leader Kyle Larson finished second for the fourth time this season. Logano, polesitter Kevin Harvick and Dale Earnhardt Jr. rounded out the top five.
