Justin Abdelkader’s power-play goal 24 seconds into overtime lifted the Detroit Red Wings to a 2-1 win over the St. Louis Blues on Sunday. The teams reignited their old Western Conference rivalry, accumulating 36 penalty minutes in a third period that included multiple skirmishes on the ice. The Red Wings had a man advantage for the final 1:21 of regulation and the opening moments of overtime. The penalty carried over to the extra session, when Abdelkader knocked in a rebound of a shot from Marek Zidlicky past Jake Allen for the game-winner. It was just the second power-play goal the Blues have allowed in 25 chances over the past seven games. The Red Wings’ Erik Cole tied the game at 1-1 just 24 seconds into the third period. Alexander Steen started the scoring for the Blues with a power-play goal at 9:38 of the second period.

MLB – Tigers’ Cabrera and Martinez see first at-bats of spring
Detroit sluggers Miguel Cabrera and Victor Martinez welcomed their first Grapefruit League at-bats of the season. Cabrera, who had offseason surgery to remove a bone spur from his right ankle and repair a stress fracture in his right foot, went 1 for 3 with a single and two strikeouts in a split-squad tie game against the Nationals. “I was restless,” he said. “It was like taking a long vacation.” Martinez, the 2014 AL MVP runner-up who had surgery to repair a torn meniscus in his left knee in February, was hitless in the split-squad loss to Atlanta. “It feels great to get the first one out of the way,” he said. Tigers manager Brad Ausmus said the odds of Cabrera being ready for opening day were better than 50-50.

NASCAR – Keseloski wins at Fontana
If you’re going to lead a NASCAR race for just one lap, it’s best to make it the final one. That’s what Brad Keselowski did in winning the Sprint Cup event at Auto Club Speedway in Fontana, Calif.  Keselowski roared past Kurt Busch on the final lap, capitalizing on two late restarts to a green-white-checkered finish. Kevin Harvick finished second to extend his remarkable streak of top-two Sprint Cup finishes to eight races dating to last season. Harvick fell just short of sweeping the three West Coast races. Busch finished third in his second race back from a suspension.

NCAA – Hockey – Minnesota State draws top seed for NCAA tournament

Minnesota State won the WCHA tournament and regular-season title to finish 29-7-3 and make the NCAA tournament for a third straight year.  The Mavericks will play RIT in South Bend, next weekend. The other Midwest regional semifinal will pit Nebraska Omaha of the NCHC against East Coast Athletic Conference tournament champion Harvard.

Golf – PGA – A win for Every
Matt Every has successfully defended his Arnold Palmer Invitational crown by sinking an 18-foot birdie putt on 18 to beat Henrik Stenson at Bay Hill. Every came from three shots behind Sunday with a 6-under 66 for a 13-under total.  Stenson had the lead heading into the round and owned a one-shot advantage with four holes to play before missing a 20-foot putt that would have forced a playoff. It was the ninth straight tournament in which a 54-hole leader failed to win.

Golf – Championship – Dawson gets the win
Marco Dawson has claimed his first Champions Tour title, capturing the Tucson Conquistadores Classic. The 51-year-old Dawson shot a 3-under 69 to finish at 13-under 203 in the first-year event at Tucson National. He had been winless in his first 20 starts on the Tour and never came away with a victory in 412 PGA starts. Bart Bryant had a 70 to finish second for the second straight event.
