MLB – White Sox rookie Anderson leaves after being hit by pitch
Chicago White Sox rookie Tim Anderson has left Thursday’s game at Detroit in the first inning with a bruised left hand after being hit by a pitch. X-rays were negative. Anderson was leading off the game when he was hit by Jordan Zimmermann’s pitch. He was able to stay in initially and eventually came around to score a run, but he was removed when the White Sox took the field. Second baseman Tyler Saladino moved over to replace Anderson at shortstop, and Carlos Sanchez went in to play
second. Anderson is hitting .264 with five home runs and 12 RBIs since being called up from the minors in June.

MLB – Mets put Cespedes on DL
Mets slugger Yoenis Cespedes has been put on the 15-day disabled list because of a sore right quadriceps that has bothered him since July 8. Mets manager Terry Collins has teed off on those wondering whether the outfielder aggravated his injury playing golf.  The team recalled outfielder Brandon Nimmo from Triple-A Las Vegas to replace Cespedes, who is hitting .292 with 22 homers and 59 RBIs this season.

NFL – Bears sign veteran fullback Darrel Young, waive Joe Sommers
The Chicago Bears have signed veteran fullback Darrel Young and waived rookie Joe Sommers. The Bears announced the moves on Thursday, a week after players reported to training camp. Young has started 36 of his 90 career games, totaling 185 rushing yards on 51 attempts and seven ouchdowns with the Washington Redskins from 2010-15. He also had 45 receptions for 432 yards and six touchdowns. Sommers had joined the Bears as an undrafted free agent out of Wisconsin-Oshkosh. The Bears also announced offensive lineman Amini Silatolu has passed his physical. Silatolu signed with the team on July 20th after four seasons with the Carolina Panthers. Silatolu was declared active/PUP before training camp because of a knee injury.

NFL – Appeals court upholds Peterson suspension
A federal appeals court has ruled that the NFL was within its rights when it suspended Minnesota Vikings star Adrian Peterson in 2014 after he was charged with child abuse. The three-judge panel wrote that the players’ union and the league both agreed to be bound by the arbitrator’s decision and that Commissioner Roger Goodell had acted within his authority. U.S. District Judge David Doty tossed out an arbitrator’s ruling last year, saying the arbitrator overreached his authority.  Peterson was suspended under the league’s personal conduct policy following a charge of child abuse after he disciplined his son with a wooden switch. He wound up playing only 1 game that year.

NHL – New home of Detroit Red Wings reaches construction milestone
The new home of the Detroit Red Wings has reached a construction milestone. A ceremony took place Thursday to mark the placement of the final piece of structural steel for the roof of Little Caesars Arena. Olympia Development of Michigan says the piece of steel, in keeping with tradition, bears the signatures of the project’s ironworkers. The arena is scheduled to open in 2017 after the Red Wings play a final season at Joe Louis Arena. It’s part of an entertainment district being built north of downtown. Mike and Marian Ilitch co-founded Little Caesars in 1959 and bought the Red Wings in 1982. Mike Ilitch bought the Detroit Tigers in 1992.

NCAA – NCAA internal report finds enforcement cases moving faster
The NCAA enforcement department reduced the average duration of its most serious cases by nine percent while its case load grew by 26 percent over the last three years, according to an internal review. The department underwent an overhaul that included new leadership and personnel, along with numerous reforms, starting in 2013. Jon Duncan was named director of enforcement in 2014. The changes came at a time when NCAA enforcement was receiving criticism for mishandling the Miami case involving booster Nevin Shapiro. Part of those reforms required a three-year self-assessment delivered to NCAA President Mark Emmert. The NCAA released Thursday the reviews done by enforcement and the committee on infractions.

NBA – Westbrook gets new contract
A person with direct knowledge of the deal says Russell Westbrook and the Thunder have agreed to a three-year, $85.7 million contract extension that runs through 2020-21. The five-time All-Star averaged 23.5 points, 7.8 rebounds and 10.4 assists last season as Oklahoma City reached the Western Conference finals before blowing a three-games-to-one lead against Golden State. The signing comes one month after All-Star Kevin Durant left the Thunder for a free-agent contract with the Warriors.

Olympics – Report: USA Gymnastics failed to act on abuse complaints
An investigation into USA Gymnastics finds the organization collected complaints of improper conduct by more than 50 coaches over 10 years and regularly declined to forward them to the authorities unless asked.  That opened the door for further abuse in some cases. The Indianapolis Star found four separates instances when USA Gymnastics didn’t take action about potential misconduct by a coach, with each of the four coaches later being charged or convicted of abuse.   The report’s release comes as the U.S. women’s team heads to Rio as the heavy favorites to defend the gold medal.

Olympics – IOC OK’s 271 Russian athletes
The International Olympic Committee has approved the entry of 271 Russian athletes for the Olympics in Rio de Janeiro. The IOC decision comes about 24 hours before the opening ceremony of the games. The 271 approved athletes come from Russia’s original entry list of 389. An investigation for the World Anti-Doping Agency detailed state-sponsored cheating in Russia.

Golf – PGA – Taylor, Loupe share lead
Jerry Kelly fired a 6-under 64 for a share of the first-round lead with Vaughn Taylor and Andrew Loupe at the Travelers Championship near Hartford. Kelly started his round on the back nine, sinking a 45-foot putt for eagle on his sixth hole of the day.  Taylor strung together five consecutive birdies starting on the 12th hole and shot a 30 on the back nine. Loupe had seven birdies and a bogey as he seeks his first PGA victory.  Jon Rahm, Ben Martin and Marc Leishman are one stroke back.
