Lions 23, Jets 3 – Abdullah impresses in Lions’ 23-3 preseason win over Jets
Matthew Stafford threw a 35-yard touchdown pass to Golden Tate, and rookie running back Ameer Abdullah ran for 67 yards _ 45 on one play – to lift the Detroit Lions to a 23-3 preseason victory over the New York Jets on Thursday night. Stafford played only one possession in Detroit’s exhibition opener. He threw for 57 yards, completing his only two pass attempts _ both to Tate. The touchdown came on a throw over the middle, and Tate slipped between three defenders after the catch and ran to the end zone. Ryan Fitzpatrick played one drive for the Jets, going 2 of 3 for 16 yards and guiding New York to a field goal. It’s been a tumultuous week for the Jets, who lost quarterback Geno Smith to a broken jaw when he was punched by teammate Ikemefuna Enemkpali in the locker room Tuesday. Enemkpali was cut shortly after.

Bears 27, Dolphins 10 – Dolphins’ Tannehill looks sharp, Bears rally for 27-10 win
Ryan Tannehill picked apart a rebuilt defense, throwing for a touchdown on the game’s opening drive, and the Miami Dolphins led into the second half before the Chicago Bears rallied for a 27-10 victory in the preseason opener Thursday night. The Bears used two interceptions by reserves to set up a touchdown and field goal that gave them a 10-point lead early in the fourth quarter. The rally aside, it was not a promising performance by a team coming off a five-win season. The Bears hired general manager Ryan Pace and coach John Fox while overhauling the defense, but there clearly is work to do.  Miami, 8-8 last season, looked good until Chicago’s reserves made their move. Tannehill, armed with a $96 million contract extension, played like a big-money quarterback, going 6 of 7 for 56 yards.

MLB – MLB to provide candidates help
Major League Baseball has hired a search firm to help prepare candidates for openings in baseball operations throughout the league, with special emphasis for minority and female candidates. There has never been a female GM in baseball, and there are few women and minorities on that side of the organizational structure in the sport. MLB has had a minority interview requirement in place for several years, but Commissioner Rob Manfred says the league feels the agreement with recruitment firm Korn Ferry might help improve its effectiveness.

Golf – PGA Championship – Dustin Johnson vaults to lead
Dustin Johnson will carry a one-stroke lead into the second round of the PGA Championship at Whistling Straits. Johnson carded five birdies and an eagle in a 6-under 66 that puts him one troke ahead of David Lingmerth. Johnson surged to the top with his eagle on the par-5 16th before closing with back-to-back pars.  Lingmerth was at minus-6 with four holes remaining before he bogeyed the par-4 6th hole. Russell Henley, Matt Kuchar, Scott Piercy and Harris English fired 68s, as did J.B. Holmes, Jason Day, Danny Lee and Matt Jones. Holmes owned a share of the lead until he bogeyed his last two holes.  The marquee threesome was expected to be No. 1-ranked Rory McIlroy, Masters and U.S. Open champ Jordan Spieth and British Open winner Zach Johnson. McIlroy had four birdies and three bogeys in a 1-under 71 that matched Spieth, who bogeyed 11 before birdieing two holes. Johnson’s 3-over 75 included six bogeys. Four-time champ Tiger Woods continues his struggles, shooting a 3-over 75.That sets him up to miss the cut in three straight majors for the first time in his career.

She also won her seventh World Cup downhill title. Vonn was in a second week in New Zealand for her first on-snow training ahead of the new season.

The NBA star has partnered with the University of Akron on a program that will provide a guaranteed four-year scholarship to the school for students in James’ “I Promise” program who qualify. The scholarship will cover tuition and the university’s general service fee – currently $9,500 per year.

MMA – UFC’s Anderson Silva suspended, fined by Nevada regulators
Nevada fight regulators imposed the maximum penalty Thursday on former UFC champion Anderson Silva for testing positive for steroid use last January. Nevada Athletic Commission Chairman Francisco Aguilar said the 40-year-old Silva was suspended for one year, stripped of his January win over Nick Diaz and fined $380,000. The fight was ruled a no contest. It had represented Silva’s return to the cage at age 39 for the first time in 13 months after badly breaking his leg. Aguilar says Silva provided inconsistent testimony and records after testing positive for Drostanolone metabolites Jan. 9. Silva is considered one of the greatest mixed martial artists in the sport’s history.  He won 10 consecutive title defenses over seven years as the UFC’s 185-pound champion until losing the belt to Chris Weidman in 2013.
