Cubs 4, Cardinals 3 (11 innings) – Rizzo draws bases-loaded walk in 11th, Cubs beat Cards 4-3
Anthony Rizzo drew a bases-loaded walk from Zach Duke with two outs in the 11th inning and the Chicago Cubs beat the St. Louis Cardinals 4-3 Thursday night for their 10th consecutive win. Pinch-hitters Willson Contreras and Jorge Soler led off with singles against the lefty Duke (2-1) and Dexter Fowler walked to load the bases with one out. Kris Bryant struck out before Rizzo took a 3-1 pitch inside to give the Cubs their longest winning streak since getting 12 straight in 2001. Mike Montgomery (4-5) allowed a single and two walks to load the bases in the 11th before striking out Matt Carpenter to end the threat. He won his first game for Chicago since being acquired from Seattle last month. The Cardinals fell 13 games behind Chicago in the NL Central and lost Matt Holliday in the 10th after he was hit on the right hand by Mike Montgomery’s 94 mph fastball.

Royals 2, White Sox 1 – Duffy throws complete game, Royals beat White Sox 2-1
Danny Duffy pitched his first complete game to win his eighth straight decision, Cheslor Cuthbert had two hits and drove in a run and the Kansas City Royals beat the Chicago White Sox 2-1 Thursday night.  Duffy (9-1) limited the White Sox to seven singles, struck out six and walked none. He has not lost since June 6 and has a 1.73 ERA in his past five starts. Duffy threw 98 pitches, 71 for strikes. Cuthbert tripled home Jarrod Dyson in the sixth and is second among AL rookies with 93 hits, 24 multihit games and a .303 batting average. Dyson was initially called out trying to steal second, but the Royals appealed and the call was overturned. Cuthbert then scored the go-ahead run on Eric Hosmer’s single off Carson Fulmer (0-2). Fulmer has an 8.47 ERA in eight relief appearances.

MLB – Cubs reliever Pedro Strop out 4-6 weeks with knee injury
Chicago Cubs reliever Pedro Strop will be sidelined four to six weeks with a torn meniscus in his left knee. The right-hander will undergo arthroscopic surgery Friday after getting hurt fielding a grounder in the eighth inning of Wednesday’s victory over the Los Angeles Angels. The 31-year-old Strop was placed on the 15-day disabled list and right-hander Justin Grimm was recalled from Triple-A Iowa. With reliever Hector Rondon also sidelined with a triceps injury, the NL Central-leading Cubs will have to shuffle bullpen roles ahead of closer Aroldis Chapman.

MLB – White Sox starter Gonzalez leaves with groin strain
Chicago White Sox right-hander Miguel Gonzalez left with a right groin strain after 21 pitches Thursday night in his start against the Kansas City Royals. After Salvador Perez fouled off a full-count pitch leading off the second, White Sox manager Robin Ventura and trainer Herm Schneider came to the mound to see Gonzalez. Michael Ynoa replaced Gonzalez and hit Perez with his first pitch. The 32-year-old Gonzalez is 2-6 with a 4.05 ERA in 18 starts and one relief appearance this season after going 39-33 with Baltimore the previous four years.

NHL – Roy resigns
Patrick Roy has resigned after three years as head coach and vice president of hockey operations for the Colorado Avalanche, saying he and the team are not on the same wave length when it comes to club matters.  The Avalanche have missed the playoffs the last two seasons after winning the Northwest Division in Roy’s first year behind the bench. Colorado was 130-92-24 under Roy, but the Avs played .500 in finishing sixth in their division last season. The move comes just over a month before NHL training camps begin.

Olympics – Women’s Gymnastics
There was no beating Simone Biles in the women’s
gymnastics all-around at the Rio Games.  The 19-year-old American entered the event as the overwhelming favorite and was dominant in becoming the fourth straight American and fifth overall to win the all-around. Biles totaled 62.198 to finish well clear of silver medalist and American teammate Aly Raisman. The bronze went to Russian Aliya Mustafina. The victory comes after Biles helped the U.S. team capture gold in the team event.

Olympics – Swimming
Michael Phelps is the first swimmer ever to win the same event at four straight Olympics. He finished a full body-length ahead of the field in the 200-meter individual medley to earn his fourth gold medal of the Rio Games and 22nd overall. U.S. teammate Ryan Lochte led at the midway point before finishing fifth.

Olympics – Swimming

The governing body for World Sailing said the 2012 bronze medalist reported feeling sick after Wednesday’s races. Her poor performances have put her at risk of missing out on a medal in the Laser Radial class.

Olympics – Rugby
Fiji has its first-ever Olympic medal, and it’s gold to boot. Now that’s a reason to party. The Pacific Island nation erupted with joy Friday after its rugby sevens team crushed Britain 43-7 in final in Rio de Janeiro.  In the capital of Suva, fans packed the 15,000-seat National Stadium to watch the Olympic final on a big screen _ held Thursday night in Rio but at 10 a.m. Friday back home. Tense at first as they saw their nation on the brink of an historic achievement, fans relaxed and then rejoiced as Fiji ran away with the victory.

Broncos 22, Bears 0 – Sanchez makes good case for QB job, Broncos beat Bears 22-0
Mark Sanchez made a strong opening argument for the Denver Broncos’ starting quarterback job, throwing for 99 yards and a touchdown in the first quarter, and the defending Super Bowl champions beat the Chicago Bears 22-0 in the preseason opener on Thursday night. Sanchez came through with just the sort of performance he needed if he’s going to beat out Trevor Siemian.  He completed 10 of 13 passes in the first quarter and led a game-opening 76-yard touchdown drive. He was intercepted by Jerrell Freeman on the Broncos’ second possession. But overall? Not bad.  Sanchez maintained his cool against Chicago’s pressure and kept the opening drive going by completing three third-down passes _ including a 32-yard TD to a wide open Demaryius Thomas along the right side. As for Siemian, the former Northwestern star looked comfortable throwing short passes and was 7 of 12 for 88 yards in the second quarter. It was a rough start for a Bears team looking for more after going 6-10 in coach John Fox’s first season. Jay Cutler threw for 18 yards and got sacked twice in the first quarter. Brian Hoyer threw for 81 yards in the second period but was sacked three times.
