MLB – Cubs’ Addison Russell calls wife abuse allegation ‘false’
Major League Baseball is looking into a domestic violence accusation against Chicago Cubs shortstop Addison Russell. His wife, Melissa, posted a photo Wednesday on Instagram with a caption suggesting he was unfaithful to her. In another post, a user named carlierreed and described by Melissa as a close friend accused Russell of “mentally and physically abusing her.” The posts have been deleted. Russell issued a statement Thursday that said: “Any allegation I have abused my wife is false and hurtful. For the well-being of my family, I’ll have no further comment.”  Spokesman Patrick Courtney says MLB is looking into the situation. Chicago Police Department spokesman Anthony Guglielmi says the department “does not have any current investigation” into Russell or allegations of domestic violence. An All-Star last season, Russell is batting just .209 with three homers and 19 RBIs this year.

Six different players scored and Sidney Crosby had three assists as the Pittsburgh Penguins chased Pekka Rinne and blew out the Nashville Predators 6-0 in Game 5 of the Stanley Cup Final on Thursday night to take a 3-2 lead in the series and move one win away from a second consecutive title.  Justin Schultz, Bryan Rust, Evgeni Malkin, Conor Sheary, Phil Kessel and Ron Hainsey scored for the defending champions, who got 24 saves from goaltender Matt Murray. Rinne got the hook after allowing three goals on nine shots in the first period, and Nashville backup Juuse Saros didn’t fare much better, giving up three goals in relief. Crosby put on a dominant performance from his first shift, aside from a scuffle with Predators defenseman P.K. Subban and an incident where he threw a water bottle onto the ice. After combining for zero points in Games 3 and 4, Malkin had a goal and an assist and Kessel a goal and two assists. The final score tied for the seventh-biggest blowout in Cup Final history.  Game 6 is Sunday night in Nashville.

NFL – Lions add OT Tony Hills, DT Ego Ferguson and DT Bruce Gaston
The Detroit Lions have signed offensive tackle Tony Hills, adding depth to an offensive line that might be without Taylor Decker. Detroit added Hills among a series of moves Thursday, including signing defensive tackles Ego Ferguson and Bruce Gaston. The Lions also waived guard Connor Bozick, defensive tackles Nick James and DT Maurice Swain. Decker had shoulder surgery earlier this week and is out indefinitely after playing every snap on offense last year as a first-round pick.  Hills played in 19 games the previous two years with the New Orleans Saints. He has also appeared in games for Dallas, Indianapolis and Pittsburgh.  Chicago drafted Ferguson in the second round three years ago. Gaston was on Carolina’s practice squad last year.

NFL – Saints’ Nick Fairley seeing heart specialists
New Orleans Saints coach Sean Payton says defensive tackle Nick Fairley is seeing multiple heart specialists after one physician advised Fairley to stop playing football.   Payton says he hopes Fairley can return to the Saints, but not unless the 29-year-old defensive lineman has “full confidence” that continuing to play won’t worsen a heart condition he’s had throughout his six-year NFL career.  Fairley, a former Detroit Lions player, recently signed a four-year extension worth up to $28 million.
