NBA – 2017 NBA Final (best of 7) – Game 1
Last Night
Golden State Warriors 113, Cleveland Cavaliers 90                              (GSW leads 1-0)

Warriors 113, Cavaliers 90 – Warriors roll to 113-91 win vs. Cavs in Game 1
Kevin Durant scored 38 points in his first NBA Finals game with Golden State, Stephen Curry added 28 and the Warriors rolled to their 13th straight win this postseason by beating the Cleveland Cavaliers 113-91 in Game 1.  With Durant on board, the opener of Cavs-Warriors III was a mismatch as Golden State scored the first 13 points of the third quarter to take a 21-point lead and never looked back. LeBron James had 28 points and 15 rebounds for the Cavs but also finished with seven turnovers. Cleveland has lost the opener in the Finals to Golden State for three straight years but did rally to win the championship in seven games last year.

NBA – McCloskey, GM who built Pistons’ “Bad Boys” teams, has died
Jack McCloskey, the general manager who built the Detroit Pistons’ “Bad Boys” championship teams, died Thursday. He was 91. The Pistons said McCloskey died in Savannah, Georgia. He had fought Alzheimer’s disease. Led by McCloskey draft picks Isiah Thomas, Joe Dumars and Dennis Rodman _ all Hall of Famers, along with coach Chuck Daly _ and trade acquisitions Bill Laimbeer, Vinnie Johnson, Rick Mahorn, Mark Aguirre and James Edwards, the Pistons won NBA titles in 1989 and 1990. Known as “Trader Jack,” McCloskey helped guide Detroit to nine straight playoff appearances, five Eastern Conference Finals in a row, and three NBA Finals. He was honored in 2008 with a retirement ceremony, where his name was lifted to the rafters.

NBA – NBA commissioner wants draft rules amended
NBA Commissioner Adam Silver wants the NBA’s draft-eligibility rules changed. To what, he isn’t sure. Less than a month away from a draft where about 20 players who completed just one year of college will be welcomed into the league, Silver expects the so-called “one-and-done” rule to be modified _ somehow _ before too long. But in saying that, Silver also acknowledged that even he isn’t certain what makes the most sense going forward. Speaking before Game 1 of the NBA Finals, Silver says the current system is “not working for anyone.” Silver says college coaches and athletic directors are among those not pleased. And he says NBA teams realize the players coming into the league are not getting the kind of training they would expect to see.

NHL – Predators coach refuses to discuss possible goalie change
Predators coach Peter Laviolette is giving no hint of whether goaltender Pekka Rinne will start in a pivotal Game 3 against Pittsburgh on Saturday night.  Laviolette pulled Rinne after the Predators gave up three goals in the first 3:28 of the third period Wednesday night for Juuse Saros. Pittsburgh finished off a 4-1 win for a 2-0 lead in the Stanley Cup Final. Asked Thursday if he’s made a decision for Game 3, Laviolette says he will not talk about lineup changes. Laviolette says the goalies know who will start.  Rinne went into the final with the stingiest numbers in net this postseason. Now he’s given up eight goals on 36 shots through two games.

Olympics – LA mayor ponders 2028 Games in exchange for youth funding
The mayor of Los Angeles is talking to Olympic leaders about having his city wait until 2028 to host the Summer Games in exchange for funding for youth sports programs. At a news conference this week, Mayor Eric Garcetti said he and Olympic leaders have discussed “what it would take for us to consider one of us going first and the other going second” _ a reference to the contest between Paris and Los Angeles for the 2024 Olympics. International Olympic Committee President Thomas Bach wants to award both the 2024 and 2028 Games and, while each city has repeatedly stressed its bid is only for 2024, Garcetti is now acknowledging discussions with the IOC about 2028. The IOC meets next week to discuss the possibility of awarding both Olympics later this year.

Golf – Jason Dufner, David Lingmerth share Memorial lead
Jason Dufner putted for birdie on every hole until the last one and shared the lead at 7-under 65 with David Lingmerth at the Memorial. Jordan Spieth wasted no time getting into the mix. One week after he finished a shot behind at Colonial, Spieth closed with a flourish of birdies at Muirfield Village and was among those at 66. Dufner hit every green in regulation until his 7-iron to the 18th came up short and into the bunker. He blasted out 12 feet by the hole and missed the par putt. Lingmerth, who picked up his first PGA Tour victory at the Memorial two years ago, also bogeyed his last hole. Dustin Johnson was on the other end of the spectrum. He didn’t make a birdie and shot 78.

Tennis – French Open – Madison Keys loses; Murray, Wawrinka advance
Madison Keys has been upset at the French Open by a 290th-ranked qualifier, Petra Martic of Croatia, 3-6, 6-3, 6-1.  The 12th-seeded American was bothered by her surgically repaired left wrist, which was checked by a trainer after the second set. Keys missed the start of this season after having an operation on the wrist.  Among other action Thursday:  Top-seeded Andy Murray is through to the third round of the French Open after beating Martin Klizan of Slovakia 6-7, 6-2, 6-2, 7-6.  No. 3 Stan Wawrinka also advanced, beating Alexandr Dolgopolov 6-4, 7-6, 7-5. The 2015 French Open champion hit 45 winners to beat Wawrinka hasn’t dropped a set so far.

NCAAFB – Prosecutors seek jail time for ex-Penn State president
Prosecutors want a judge to jail former Penn State President Graham Spanier for his conviction in hushing up suspected child sex abuse in 2001 by Jerry Sandusky.  Prosecutors say state sentencing guidelines indicate Spanier should get up to a year in jail for child endangerment. Spanier’s lawyer is asking for probation. Sentencing is today. In a court filing unsealed Thursday, the Pennsylvania attorney general’s office also assails two one-time Penn State administrators for their testimony in Spanier’s March trial after they pleaded guilty in the case. But prosecutors didn’t recommend sentences for ex-athletic director Tim Curley and ex-vice president Gary Schultz.
