Tigers 10, Royals 4 – Victor Martinez hits 3 homers as Tigers pound Royals 10-4
Victor Martinez matched a career-best with three home runs, the Tigers pounded six as a team and Detroit sailed to a 10-4 victory over the Kansas City Royals Thursday night to open their four-game series. Martinez hit a pair of solo shots and Nick Castellanos went deep before James McCann homered off Royals reliever Luke Hochevar (1-1) leading off the seventh to knot the game 4-all. Cabrera followed moments later with a two-run shot that gave the Tigers their first lead of the game. Detroit added three more runs in the eighth before Martinez hit his third homer in the ninth. Justin Verlander (7-5) allowed four runs on eight hits over seven innings, continuing his mastery of the Royals at Kauffman Stadium. Verlander improved to 13-5 in 22 starts at KC.

MLB – Tigers’ J.D. Martinez leaves game with fractured elbow
Detroit Tigers outfielder J.D. Martinez left Thursday night’s game against the Kansas City Royals with a fractured right elbow that he sustained when running into the wall while chasing a fly ball. Martinez managed to grab the ball hit by Paulo Orlando in the second inning and lobbed it to the infield, but it was clear something was wrong. He was examined by a trainer and Tigers manager Brad Ausmus before leaving the game. Martinez will have a CT scan Friday to confirm the diagnosis. It’s unclear how long he will be out.

Cavaliers 115, Warriors 101 – Cavs come through again, force Game 7 against Warriors
LeBron James had his second straight 41-point game and the Cleveland Cavaliers won their second straight must-win game, beating Golden State 115-101 to force a decisive Game 7 Sunday night in Oakland. No team has come back from a 3-1 deficit to win an NBA championship series, but the Cavs are giving it their best shot. Afterward James said of the 3-1 comeback jinx: “Records are made to be broken.” James also grabbed eight rebounds and dished out 11 assists. Kyrie Irving added 23 points as the Cavaliers led by as many as 24. Stephen Curry had 30 to lead the Warriors before getting ejected with 4:22 left. It’s the first ejection in the NBA MVP’s career.

NHL – Red Wings sign Riley Sheahan to 2-year, $4.15M contract
The Detroit Red Wings have signed center Riley Sheahan to a two-year, $4.15 million contract.   The team announced Sheahan signed the deal Thursday. Sheahan had 14 goals and 25 points in a career-high 81 games last season. The 24-year-old Sheahan has 36 goals and 85 points in his career, which began toward the end of the 2011-12 season. Detroit drafted him in the first round out of Notre Dame in 2010.  Detroit also signed defenseman Brian Lashoff to a two-way contract. He will make $650,000 if he plays in the NHL and $275,000 if he is in the AHL again with the Grand Rapids Griffins. The 24-year-old Lashoff played for the Griffins all of last season after playing in 117 games for the Red Wings the previous three years.

NHL – Chicago Blackhawks extend affiliation with Rockford IceHogs
The Chicago Blackhawks have extended their affiliation deal with the Rockford IceHogs of American Hockey League through the 2021-22 season. The extension, announced Thursday, takes effect during the 2017 to 2018 season. The two teams began the partnership for the 2007 to 2008 season, Rockford’s first in the AHL. Over the following nine seasons, 67 players have dressed for both the IceHogs and the Blackhawks.

Golf – PGA – US Open – Rain limits play in opening round
Not much golf was played on opening day of the US Open with rain interrupting the action three times before it was suspended. They will try to complete the first round early this morning. Little-known Andrew Landry tops the leaderboard at 3-under through 17 holes and set up a 10 foot birdie putt on the final hole when play was halted.  The PGA Tour rookie is ranked 624th in the world. Amateur Scottie Scheffler has the clubhouse lead after posting a 1-under 69.Only nine of the 156 golfers were able to complete their round. Defending champ Jordan Spieth is 1 over through 11. Masters champ Danny Willett is 4 over through 12 and Rory McIlroy is 4 over through 13 holes.

Golf – LPGA – Defending champion Lexi Thompson tied for Meijer LPGA lead
Defending champion Lexi Thompson shot a 6-under 65 on Thursday for a share of the Meijer LPGA Classic lead, with Brooke Henderson, Lydia Ko and Ariya Jutanugarn close behind. The 21-year-old Thompson played the front nine, her final nine at Blythefield, in 6 under. After parring the first nine holes, she holed out from 71 yards with a lob wedge for eagle on the par-5 first and birdied Nos. 3-5 and 8, playing the three front-nine par 5s in 4 under. Thompson was tied for the lead with 52-year-old Laura Davies, Sei Young Kim, Carlota Ciganda and Paula Reto. U.S. Women’s Open champion In Gee Chun was at 66 along with So Yeon Ryu, Jodi Ewart Shadoff, Jaclyn Jansen, Alena Sharp, Amelia Lewis and Q Baek. Henderson, coming off a playoff victory Sunday over the top-ranked Ko in the KPMG Women’s PGA Championship outside Seattle, matched Ko with a 67. Jutanugarn, third last week after winning her previous three starts, bogeyed the last two holes for a 68.

NFL – Bears sign tight end Tony Moeaki, lineman Marquis Jackson
The Chicago Bears signed tight end Tony Moeaki and defensive lineman Marquis Jackson Thursday. The Bears waived defensive lineman Kenton Adeyemi and linebacker Don Cherry. Both joined the club this year as undrafted free agents. Moeaki, who has battled knee issues in the past few years, got off to a fast start for Kansas City after being drafted in the third round in 2010. In 49 games over two seasons for the Chiefs, the Buffalo Bills in 2013, the Seattle Seahawks in 2014 and Atlanta Falcons last season, Moeaki has 91 receptions for 1,201 yards and six touchdowns. He missed the 2011 season with a knee injury. Jackson, who attended Bears’ minicamps this year, played in two games for the Portland Thunder of the AFL, posting 1 1/2  tackles, two pass breakups and one fumble recovery.

USA Soccer – US edges Equador in Copa America
The United States edged Equador 2-1 to reach the semifinals of the Copa America tournament. Clint Dempsey opened the scoring with a header into the net in the 22nd minute. Gyasi Zardis added a goal in the 66th minute.  The Americans will play the winner of Saturday’s Argentina-Venezuela quarterfinal next Tuesday in Houston.
