2016 Senior PGA Championship presented by KitchenAid

Rocco Mediate ties course and Senior PGA record with 62
Rocco Mediate played the first 13 holes in 9 under and closed with five pars for a 62 to match the Senior PGA Championship and Harbor Shore records Thursday.  Taking advantage of greens softened by overnight rain, Mediate matched the marks set by Kenny Perry in the 2012 final round. The 53-year-old Mediate capped a front-nine 29 with an eagle on the par-5 ninth and added birdies on the par-3 11th and 13th holes at Jack Nicklaus-designed Harbor Shores. Gene Sauers had a bogey-free 63. Mike Goodes shot 64, and Kenny Perry, Kirk Triplett and club pro John DalCorobbo were another stroke back. Perry played alongside Mediate and two-time defending champion Colin Montgomerie, who had two late bogeys in a 67. Bernhard Langer, fresh off the 100th victory of his career, at a major, no less, at the Regions Tradition in Alabama, opened with a 69. The 58-year-old German is going for an unprecedented sweep of all five PGA Tour Champions majors. John Daly struggled to a 75 in his second senior major start. He had a 9 on the par-4 16th.

Indy 500 – Larger crowd means tighter security at this year’s Indy 500
An expected record-breaking crowd at this year’s 100th running of the Indianapolis 500 means that attendees should be ready for heightened security. Indianapolis Motor Speedway officials are encouraging attendees to arrive at least two hours earlier than they usually would due to the sold-out crowd and new security features. The speedway’s senior director of safety and security says every person and vehicle entering the venue on Sunday should expect to be stopped and checked by security. All bags and coolers will be checked upon entry, vehicles will be randomly searched and license plates will be scanned. The safety and security director says the number of public safety representatives, including police, medics and firefighters, will increase by 20 percent.     Officials expect about 350,000 fans to attend the race.

NASCAR – Truex Jr. starts on the pole
Martin Truex Jr. has won the pole for Sunday’s Coca-Cola 600, NASCAR’s longest race of the year. Truex turned a lap of 192.328 to take the top spot from Joey Logano, who had the top qualifying time in the first two rounds and won the All-Star race last week at Charlotte Motor Speedway. Ricky Stenhouse Jr. will start third, Denny Hamlin fourth and Brad Keselowski fifth.

NFL – Lions learning to live without retired WR Calvin Johnson
Matthew Stafford dropped back and sailed a spiral through the air, over his intended target and onto the ground.  Thud. The Detroit Lions gave their first glimpse of what life is like on the field without Calvin Johnson on Thursday, when the media had access to an offseason training activity for the first time this year. It didn’t look good without Johnson on the field, leaving a relatively lackluster lot of receivers in Honolulu blue and silver.  Stafford’s top options seemed to be a pair of newcomers, Marvin Jones and Jeremy Kerley, and TJ Jones. Golden Tate was absent from the voluntary workout, and Caldwell said he wasn’t hurt. Marvin Jones, meanwhile, also said he’s getting tired of hearing questions about joining a receiving corps that is expected to take a hit without the spectacular player known as Megatron.

NFL – Lawsuit alleges Bears’ practice field uses stolen tech
The developer of an artificial playing surface has filed a lawsuit against the installer of the turf at the Chicago Bears practice facility, accusing the company of using stolen technology.  FieldTurf USA says it owns the patent to the plastic and rubber-based turf developed by its founder, French Canadian tennis pro Jean Prevost, which is used by a number of NFL teams. In a lawsuit filed in U.S. District Court in Chicago on Wednesday, FieldTurf USA accuses Downers Grove-based UBU Sports of violating its patent when it installed an almost identical product at the Bears’ practice facility in Lake Forest. UBU Sports spokesman Dennis Van Milligen declined to comment on the lawsuit, but acknowledged the company installed the Bears’ practice field and also laid stadium turf for five other NFL teams.

Crews move Magic Johnson statue amid $50M renovation project
Construction crews at Michigan State University’s Breslin Center have moved a statue of Earvin “Magic” Johnson as part of an ongoing $50 million renovation project. The statue of the former basketball star was lifted by crane on Wednesday from its current location near the ticket office at the East Lansing arena to a temporary area about 100 feet east. Jason Van Zee, a construction project manager, tells the Lansing State Journal the statue will sit about 150 feet south of its former home when the project is completed. The statue is being moved to make way for the new Hall of History, a 26,000-square-foot addition to Breslin Center commemorating the school’s college basketball legacy. Breslin Center is open during renovations, which are expected to finish by June 2018.

MHSAA – St. Joe will open at the Big House
The St. Joseph football team will be taking an unexpected road trip to start the 2016 season. The Bears were scheduled to open up the year with a home game at Dickinson Stadium against Kalamazoo Central. St. Joe will still be the home team when the two teams meet at Michigan Stadium at the University of Michigan on August 26th at 4 PM. St. Joseph Head Coach Gandalf Church said, despite the location change, it’s still a regular football game.  "It’s going to be four quarters of football and blocking and tackling, and all those things are going to be what matter. It doesn’t matter if you’re in the Big House or in Dickinson Stadium."  The Big House will play host to 7 games on the opening weekend of high school football in the state, with two games each on Thursday and Friday, and a triple header on Saturday.
