MLB – Major League Baseball
Last Night
Chicago White Sox 2, Houston Astros 1
Milwaukee Brewers 5, Chicago Cubs 3
Tigers were off

White Sox 2, Astros 1 – White Sox edge Astros, 2-1; Sale dominates, moves to 9-0
Chris Sale went the distance on a masterful four-hitter on Thursday night, becoming the first major league pitcher since 2008 to win his first nine starts, and the Chicago White Sox edged the Houston Astros 2-1 to snap their season-high four game losing streak. Sale walked none and struck out a season-high nine en route to his second straight complete game. No other pitcher has more than seven victories in the big leagues this season. The Arizona Diamondbacks’ Brandon Webb had been the last to post a 9-0 record in his first nine starts. The last White Sox to accomplish the feat was Eddie Cicotte in 1919, when he won 12 in a row. Houston broke the shutout bid in the eighth, when Evan Gattis clubbed Sale’s first pitch for a home run.

Brewers 5, Cubs 3 – Guerra strikes out 11 as Brewers slow Cubs with 5-3 win
Junior Guerra struck out a career-high 11, Kirk Nieuwenhuis and Chris Carter homered and the Milwaukee Brewers slowed the Chicago Cubs with a 5-3 victory Thursday. Jason Hammel (5-1) allowed four runs and five hits in six innings. He had been 8-0 with a 2.37 ERA in 11 career starts against the Brewers. Chicago, a big-league best 28-11, has lost three times in a four-game span for the first time this season. The Cubs scored seven runs in the three-game series. Making his first start against Chicago, Guerra (3-0) gave up Dexter Fowler’s 15th career leadoff homer but settled down to allow three runs and five hits in seven innings.

NBA – 2016 NBA Playoffs – Conference Finals (Best of 7)
Last Night
Cleveland Cavaliers 108, Raptors 89                                         (CLE leads 2-0)

Cavaliers 108, Raptors 89 – Cavs a perfect 10 after a rout of Raptors
LeBron James had a triple-double and the Cleveland Cavaliers stayed postseason perfect through 10 games with a 108-89 victory over the Toronto Raptors on Thursday night in Game 2 of the Eastern Conference finals. James had 23 points, 11 rebounds and 11 assists as the Cavs became the fourth team in NBA history to start 10-0 in the playoffs, joining the Los Angeles Lakers (1989, 2001) and San Antonio Spurs (2012). Only the second Lakers team won an NBA title, and the Cavs are now two wins from appearing in their second straight NBA Finals and trying to end Cleveland’s 52-year sports championship drought. Kyrie Irving scored 26 and Kevin Love 19 for Cleveland.

NHL – 2016 Stanley Cup Playoffs (Conference Finals – Best of 7)
Last Night
San Jose Sharks 3, St. Louis Blues 0                                          (SJS leads 2-1)

Sharks 3, Blues 0 – Jones’ 2nd shutout gives Sharks 2-1 series lead over Blues
Martin Jones made 22 saves in his second straight shutout and Tomas Hertl scored twice to give the San Jose Sharks a series lead for the first time in four trips to the Western Conference final with a 3-0 victory over the St. Louis Blues in Game 3 Thursday night. Joonas Donskoi also scored to give the Sharks a 2-1 series advantage and move them as close as they have ever been to reaching their first Stanley Cup final. San Jose had won just three games in its first three trips to the conference final, part of a long history of playoff disappointment that is showing signs of coming to an end. St. Louis has gone 150:45 without scoring since Jori Lehtera’s second-period goal in Game 1 led to a 2-1 victory.

Tonight
Pittsburgh Penguins at Tampa Bay Lightning, 8:00 p.m.                (PIT leads 2-1)

NCAA Football – Fired Weis was Notre Dame’s highest-paid coach in 2014-15
Charlie Weis remained the highest-paid coach on Notre Dame’s payroll last year despite being fired in 2009. The university paid Weis $2,054,744 between July 1st, 2014, and June 30th, 2015, according to Notre Dame’s most recent IRS documents made public this week. The documents say the payments ended last December. The documents also show football coach Brian Kelly was paid $1.62 million, including $450,995 in bonus and incentive pay. Defensive coordinator Brian VanGorder was paid $1.1 million. Athletic director Jack Swarbrick was paid $1.61 million, including $225,471 in bonus and incentive pay. Men’s basketball coach Mike Brey was paid $970,177 and received an additional $1.15 million from its sports properties. Women’s basketball coach Muffet McGraw was paid $1.38 million and was paid an additional $300,000 from its sports properties.

Golf – Mickelson has to return nearly a million bucks
Five-time major champion Phil Mickelson has agreed to forfeit nearly $1 million dollars that the Securities And Exchange Commission says he earned in an illegal insider trading scheme.  Mickelson’s management group issued a statement saying he “has no desire to benefit from any transaction that the SEC sees as questionable.” The SEC says a gambler received tips and business information about Dean Foods Co. from a former Dean Foods director. Authorities say one of those tips was passed along to Mickelson, who made a big, successful stock trade with the information.

Golf – PGA – Garcia, Lee lead Nelson; Spieth one back
Sergio Garcia, Johnson Wagner and Danny Lee were clubhouse co-leaders when the first round of the Byron Nelson Classic was suspended by darkness.  Garcia opened with a 7-under 63 that included five birdies and an eagle on the par-5 seventh hole.  Lee had seven birdies, including three straight to start the back nine. Wagner also birdied seven holes in a bogey-free round. Jordan Spieth and Dustin Johnson completed 6-under 66s, as did Freddie Jacobson. Tom Hoge was 6-under through 14 before he was one of 30 players still on the course when play was stopped.

Golf – Champions – Perry in front
Kenny Perry fired an 8-under 64 for a two-stroke lead over Bernhard Langer and Gene Sauers through one round of the Regions Tradition.  Perry birdied five of the first eight holes in a bogey-free round, but he was tied for the lead until he birdied the final hole while Langer bogeyed it. Sauers birdied four of the final six holes, including 18.

Golf – LPGA – Miyazato leads
Mika Miyazato had five birdies in a six-hole stretch en route to a 6-under 65 and the first-round lead in the Kingsmill Championship. Miyazato closed her opening nine with the birdie run, dropped a stroke on the par-5 third, and rebounded with birdies on the par-4 sixth and eighth holes. Defending champion Minjee Lee and Brittany Lincicome were a stroke back.

Tennis – Federer pulls out of French Open
Roger Federer has pulled out of the French Open, ending his record of 65 consecutive Grand Slam tournament appearances since 2000.  The 17-time Grand Slam champion had knee surgery this year and returned to play at the Monte Carlo Masters in early April. Federer has also been dealing with a back problem that has limited his schedule in recent weeks. The last major Federer missed was the 1999 U.S. Open.

Olympics – USA Swimming won’t train in Puerto Rico
USA Swimming is taking a precautionary measure due to the threat of the Zika virus. A person familiar with the situation said national team athletes and coaches have been told the team has moved a pre-Olympic training camp from Puerto Rico to Atlanta. The U.S. team is still scheduled to hold a training camp in San Antonio from July 11-21. After that, the team had been planning to make a stop in Puerto Rico for several more days of training before traveling on to Rio de Janeiro.  The Olympic swimming competition begins Aug. 6.
