Seattle Mariners 5, Chicago White Sox 4
Chicago Cubs 9, Cincinnati Reds 5

Tigers 6, Orioles 5 – Tigers homer twice off Bundy, edge Orioles 6-5
Victor Martinez hit a two-run homer off Dylan Bundy to put Detroit ahead in the fifth inning, and the Tigers went on to a 6-5 victory over the Baltimore Orioles on Thursday. J.D. Martinez hit a three-run shot in the third for the Tigers, who ended a streak of eight straight quality starts by Bundy (5-2) to start the season. The Baltimore right-hander allowed six runs and eight hits in six innings. Jordan Zimmermann (4-2) allowed four runs and seven hits in six innings, and three relievers finished for Detroit. Alex Wilson pitched a perfect ninth for his second save. Chris Davis, Adam Jones and Seth Smith homered for the Orioles. Baltimore led 3-0 before J.D. Martinez tied it with his fifth home run in six games. Detroit’s Miguel Cabrera sat out with a strained oblique, and Baltimore’s Manny Machado was out with a sore finger.

Mariners 5, White Sox 4 – Mariners blow lead, rally in 9th to beat White Sox 5-4
Pinch-hitter Guillermo Heredia’s two-out single in the ninth inning scored Jarrod Dyson from second base to give the Seattle Mariners a 5-4 win over the Chicago White Sox Thursday night. Batting for Ben Gamel, Heredia looped a breaking ball from Dan Jennings (2-1) into shallow right-center field and allowed the speedy Dyson to race home from second with the winning run after Seattle’s bullpen blew a 4-0 lead. Seattle’s Jean Segura matched the longest hitting streak in baseball this season with a three-run home run early in the game and Dyson added a solo shot. Chicago rallied also thanks to the long ball. Matt Davidson hit a two-run homer in the seventh inning, and Todd Frazier and Tim Anderson added back-to-back solo shots off Seattle reliever Dan Altavilla with two outs in the eighth to tie it. Seattle reliever Nick Vincent (2-1) settled the shaky bullpen with a perfect ninth inning to get the victory.

Cubs 9, Reds 5 – Baez hits grand slam, Bryant homers as Cubs beat Reds 9-5
Javier Baez hit a grand slam, Kris Bryant homered and the Chicago Cubs beat the Cincinnati Reds 9-5 Thursday to complete a three-game sweep. Chicago outscored Cincinnati 25-15 in the series and has 23 wins in its last 28 games against the Reds. Baez had three hits and a season-high five RBIs. He capped a five-run first inning against Amir Garrett (3-3) with his third career slam.  Bryant hit his eighth homer this season in the fourth, a solo drive, and the Cubs took a 9-0 lead in the fifth.  John Lester (2-2) improved to 11-0 in his last 15 regular-season home starts, allowing three runs and six hits in six-plus innings. He left with a 9-1 lead after giving up singles to Jose Peraza, Tucker Barnhart and Arismendy Alcantara in the seventh.

MLB – Cubs raise new flag to honor Jackie Robinson
The Chicago Cubs have raised a new flag in honor of Jackie Robinson on the 70th anniversary of his first game at Wrigley Field. His granddaughter Meta Robinson helped raise a white flag with “Robinson 42” in blue letters on the right-field foul pole hours before Thursday’s game against the Cincinnati Reds. Robinson’s first appearance at Wrigley Field came on May 18, 1947, about a
month after he broke the majors’ color barrier. He went 0 for 4 with a walk and two strikeouts for the Brooklyn Dodgers before 46,572, the largest paid regular-season crowd ever at the ballpark. Wrigley is the only remaining major league stadium where Robinson played. A “JR 42” flag had flown on the roof after Major League Baseball retired his number 42 in 1997.

MLB – Chris Ilitch approved as the Tigers’ controlling owner
Chris Ilitch has been unanimously approved as the new controlling owner of the Detroit Tigers. Baseball Commissioner Rob Manfred made the announcement Thursday following the vote during a quarterly owners’ meeting. Tigers owner Mike Ilitch died in February at age 87. Ilitch Holdings Inc. announced a succession plan in May 2016 in which Chris Ilitch, a son of Mike and Marian Ilitch, would take over his parents’ roles. Mike Ilitch said then that their businesses, including the Tigers and the NHL’s Detroit Red Wings, would remain family owned.

MLB – Police investigating death of man who fell at Wrigley Field
Chicago police are investigating the death of a 42-year-old man who fell over a railing at Wrigley Field. Richard E. Garrity of Wheaton was pronounced dead Wednesday at Advocate Illinois Masonic Medical Center. An autopsy Thursday by the Cook County medical examiner determined he died of head injuries from an accidental fall. Authorities say Garrity fell and suffered head trauma as he was leaving the ballpark after Tuesday night’s game between the Chicago Cubs and Cincinnati Reds. Cubs spokesman Julian Green said Thursday the team doesn’t know how far Garrity fell, but it wasn’t from the upper deck. Spokesmen for the Chicago police and fire departments also said they didn’t have information on where or how Garrity fell. Garrity’s father, Richard Garrity Senior, told The Chicago Tribune his son had been attending a work outing with his wife and co-workers.
