MLB – Major League Baseball
Yesterday
Kansas City Royals 4, Detroit Tigers 0
Los Angeles Angels 3, Chicago White Sox 2
Chicago Cubs 16, Cincinnati Reds 0

Royals 4, Tigers 0 – Volquez sharp through 7 innings as Royals beat Tigers 4-0
Edinson Volquez tossed seven sharp innings, Mike Moustakas went deep and the Kansas City Royals pounded Mike Pelfrey in a 4-0 victory over the Detroit Tigers Thursday night. Volquez (3-0) retired the first eight batters and only had to wiggle out of one jam, when Alcides Escobar let a grounder go through his legs in the fourth inning. The Tigers went on to load the bases before Volquez struck out Jarrod Saltalamacchia to end it. Escobar atoned for his gaffe with a sacrifice fly off Pelfrey (0-3) in the bottom half of the fourth. Lorenzo Cain also drove in a run, and Kansas City tacked on another when a double-steal turned into an error on third baseman Nick  Castellanos that allowed a run to scamper home. Volquez scattered five hits and a walk while striking out five in the shutout at Kauffman Stadium.

Angels 3, White Sox 2 – Trout homers, reaches 4 times as Angels beat White Sox 3-2
Mike Trout hit a two-run homer and reached base four times, helping back Jered Weaver as the Los Angeles Angels beat the Chicago White Sox 3-2 Thursday to close a 10-game trip. Melky Cabrera’s solo homer in the seventh was the lone run off Weaver (1-1), who allowed three hits in seven innings despite velocity that topped out at 85 mph. Trout connected on a fastball from John Danks (0-3), driving the ball 419 feet to left-center with two outs in the fifth _ he has been 0 for 8 with four strikeouts against Danks. Trout also singled and walked twice.

Cubs 16, Reds 0 – Arrieta throws 2nd career no-hitter as Cubs beat Reds 16-0
Jake Arrieta of the Chicago Cubs pitched his second no-hitter in a span of 11 regular-season starts, shutting down the Cincinnati Reds in a 16-0 rout Thursday night. The reigning NL Cy Young winner threw the first no-hitter of the Major League Baseball season. Arrieta (4-0) struck out six, walked four and allowed only six balls hit out of the infield. He threw 119 pitches, retiring Eugenio Suarez on a routine flyball to right field to end it. Arrieta also no-hit the Dodgers 2-0 last Aug. 30, part of one of the best pitching stretches in club history. The Reds hadn’t been held hitless in a regular-season game since 1971, when Rick Wise did it for Philadelphia. In the 2010 NL playoffs, Roy Halladay of the Phillies pitched a no-hitter against Cincinnati.

DeMar DeRozan rebounded from his postseason shooting slump Thursday night, scoring 21 points, and Kyle Lowry also added 21 to help Toronto roll past Indiana 101-85. The Raptors lead the best-of-seven first-round series 2-1 and have reclaimed the home-court advantage they squandered by losing the series opener last weekend. Indiana was led by Paul George, who had 25 points, 10 rebounds and six assists. Rookie Myles Turner scored 11 of 17 points in the second half.

Lightning 1, Red Wings 0 – Killorn’s late goal lifts Lightning over Red Wings 1-0
Ben Bishop stopped 34 shots and Alex Killorn scored with less than two minutes remaining Thursday night as the Tampa Bay Lightning advanced to the second round of the Stanley Cup playoffs with a 1-0 shutout of the Detroit Red Wings. Killorn’s second winning goal of the series was set up by Ryan Callahan, who retrieved goalie Petr Mrazek’s bad pass behind the Detroit net and centered the puck in the crease for Killorn’s backhander at 18:17 of the third period. Tampa Bay eliminated the Red Wings in the first round for the second straight year. Detroit pushed the defending Eastern Conference champions to seven games a year ago, but could only beat them once in five attempts this time, with Killorn, Tyler Johnson and Nikita Kucherov picking up the offensive slack for Tampa Bay with star Steven Stamkos injured. Detroit only scored eight goals in the series, though not because of a lack of opportunities. The Red Wings finished 1 for 25 on the power play, and their futility was never more evident than Thursday night, when they failed to even get a shot on goal during a 5-on-3 advantage early in the opening period.

Blackhawks 4, Blues 3 – 2OT – Kane nets winner, Blackhawks beat Blues in 2OT
Patrick Kane scored on a backhander early in the second overtime and the Chicago Blackhawks avoided first-round elimination with a 4-3 victory over the St. Louis Blues early Friday. The game winner was the first goal in the series by the defending Stanley Cup winners’ stars, Kane and Jonathan Toews. Both assisted on Artemi Panarin’s goal in the final second of the second period for a 3-1 lead. Kane, who led the NHL in scoring with 106 points, circled the net to corral his own shot that slowly slid wide, and poked it past Brian Elliott at 3:07 to send a standing-room crowd of 19,956 home unhappy. David Backes tied it on a deflection that slipped past Corey Crawford with 5:10 to play. Rookie Robby Fabbri and Jaden Schwartz also scored for St. Louis.  Marian Hossa and Artem Anisimov also scored for Chicago, which will host Game 6 on Saturday.

NCAA – Michigan State announces partnership with Fox Sports
Michigan State’s athletic department has announced a 15-year multimedia rights partnership with Fox Sports that will provide guaranteed revenues of over $150 million. The partnership takes effect for the 2016 to 2017 academic year, with Michigan State granting Fox Sports marketing and corporate partnership rights. The rights will include radio and television programming. Michigan State says it was the last school within the top five conferences to manage its rights in-house. Athletic director Mark Hollis says it’s the right time to partner with Fox Sports, which can focus on building Michigan State’s brand. Fox Sports Detroit and the Big Ten Network are part of the Fox Sports family of networks.

NASCAR – Tony Stewart cleared to race, will be in car at Richmond
Tony Stewart has been cleared to return to racing and will be back in his car Friday at Richmond International Raceway. Stewart missed the first eight races of the season with a fractured vertebra suffered in a January all-terrain vehicle accident. Stewart has said he will retire after the season. Meanwhile, NASCAR has fined Stewart $35,000 for criticizing the series about a potential safety hazard during races. The three-time champion warned on Wednesday that a driver is going to get hurt if the series doesn’t start policing pit stops for missing lug nuts. NASCAR chairman Brian France said Stewart is “wrong” and the series takes pride in its push for safety.
