Super Bowl XLIX

New England Patriots (12-4) vs. Seattle Seahawks (12-4), 6:30 p.m.    Sports Radio 1400 WSJM, 3:30

Super Bowl XLIX – All eyes on Brady
Tom Brady’s cold continues to be big news in Phoenix as the Patriots and Seahawks gear up for Sunday’s Super Bowl. The Patriots QB still sounded congested when he said Thursday “I expect to be 100 percent on Sunday. I’ll be ready to go.” He participated fully in practice on Wednesday and said he felt a lot better today. On the Seattle side of things, running back Marshawn Lynch actually made some comments to reporters. In short he simply said he’s got nothing to talk about. He left after his mandatory five minutes.

NFL – Deflategate – NFL says referees did their job
NFL officiating chief Dean Blandino says the inspection of the footballs by referee Walt Anderson before the AFC championship game was handled properly. But Blandino also said the process of checking the footballs and security surrounding the inspections will be enhanced for Sunday’s Super Bowl.  As the league’s investigation into the Patriots’ use of under-inflated footballs moves along, Blandino made it clear the officiating crew for New England’s win over Indianapolis did its job. As Blandino put it, “Officiating is not part of the investigation.”

Michigan State 71, Rutgers 51 – Dawson has 17 and 11, Michigan State beats Rutgers 71-51
Brenden Dawson had 17 points and 11 rebounds and Michigan State used a 20-2 run to start the second half to roll over Rutgers 71-51 on Thursday night in a game that was postponed earlier in the week by the threat of a blizzard in New Jersey. Bryn Forbes added 18 points as the Spartans  (14-7, 5-3  Big Ten) shot 51 percent from the field, limited Rutgers to 29 percent shooting and led almost every second of the game. Travis Trice added 10 points and five assists before leaving late in the game, seemingly favoring his left arm. Kadeem Jack had 17 points to lead Rutgers (10-11, 2-7) which has lost five in a row since beating Wisconsin earlier this month. Michigan State, which had lost two of its last three games, blew this one open at the start of the second half.

Lakers 123, Bulls 118 – 2OT – Lakers stop 9-game skid, edge Bulls in double OT 123-118
Jordan Hill scored 26 points and forced the second overtime with a clutch jumper, and the Los Angeles Lakers snapped their nine-game losing streak in thrilling fashion with a 123-118 victory over the Chicago Bulls on Thursday night. Wayne Ellington scored 23 points and rookie Jordan Clarkson added 18 for the Lakers, who held off the Bulls for their first victory since Jan. 9. With big late baskets from everybody in their patchwork lineup, the Lakers avoided matching the 1994 squad coached by Magic Johnson for the longest skid in the 16-time champion franchise’s history. All-Star Jimmy Butler matched his career high with 35 points for the Bulls, who rallied from a nine-point deficit in 70 seconds late in regulation.

Tampa Bay took a 4-1 lead at 11:03 of the second when Paquette completed his first hat trick from the right circle during a short-handed 2-on-1. NHL – Canucks acquire D Adam Clendening from Blackhawks
The Vancouver Canucks have acquired minor league defenseman Adam Clendening in a trade with the Chicago Blackhawks. Clendening, 22, was selected by Chicago in the second round of the 2011 draft and made his NHL debut in November. He had a goal and an assist in four games before he was sent down to Rockford of the American Hockey League. The Canucks sent 18-year-old defenseman Gustav Forsling to the Blackhawks to complete the deal. Forsling has three goals and two assists in 35 regular-season games with Linkoping of the Swedish Hockey League. Forsling was a fifth-round pick in last year’s draft. Blackhawks general manager Stan Bowman says Forsling is “an offensive defenseman that plays very well on the power play and has a big shot.” The trade was announced on Thursday night.

AHL – NHL’s top minor league to send 5 teams to California
The NHL’s feeder league will undergo a sizable westward shift, designed to bring five farm teams closer to their parent clubs. The American Hockey League announced Thursday the creation of a Pacific Division for next season, the product of nearly three years of discussions with the NHL. Anaheim (San Diego), Calgary (Stockton), Edmonton (Bakersfield), Los Angeles (Ontario) and San Jose (San Jose) will each move their primary minor league affiliate to the California cities this summer. Ducks prospects have been assigned to the Norfolk Admirals in Virginia. The Adirondack Flames have been playing in Glens Falls, New York. The Oilers have been tied to the Oklahoma City Barons. The Kings have been with the Manchester Monarchs in New Hampshire. The Worcester Sharks have been playing in Massachusetts.   American Hockey League President/CEO David Andrews made the announcement.  “Relocating five teams is a complex process, and we are very excited to have brought this initiative to a successful outcome,” said Andrews. “The Western-based NHL clubs have been in dialogue with our league for almost three years, and today’s announcement launches a new era for the American Hockey League and for professional hockey in California.”
