#12 Michigan State 76, Northwestern 45 – No. 12 Michigan State makes 16 3s, beats Northwestern 76-45
Denzel Valentine made five of Michigan State’s season-high 16 3-pointers and the 12th-ranked Spartans clamped down on cold-shooting Northwestern for a 76-45 victory Thursday night. Valentine finished with 19 points, seven assists and six rebounds as the Spartans (18-4, 5-4 Big Ten) beat the Wildcats for the seventh straight time. Matt McQuaid scored 14 of his 17 points in the second half, and freshman Deyonta Davis had eight points, 11 rebounds and six blocked shots.  Northwestern (15-7, 3-6) shot a season-low 20.7 percent from the field in its fourth consecutive loss. It finished with more free throws (17) than field goals (12). Bryant McIntosh had 14 points on 4-for-15 shooting for the Wildcats, and Aaron Falzon finished with 11 points. Redshirt senior Tre Demps was 2 for 14 from the field, missing each of his seven 3-point attempts.

Syracuse 81, #25 Notre Dame 66 – Syracuse upends No. 25 Notre Dame 81-66
Trevor Cooney scored 22 points to lead four Syracuse players in double figures, and the Orange beat No. 25 Notre Dame 81-66 on Thursday night. It was the fourth victory of the season over a ranked team for Syracuse (14-8, 4-5 ACC), which built a 44-27 halftime lead and was not threatened in the second half by the Irish (14-6, 5-3), who played without injured point guard and leading scorer Demetrius Jackson. The loss snapped the Irish’s four-game win streak. Michael Gbinije, Tyler Lydon and Malachi Richardson each scored 15 for Syracuse. Notre Dame freshman guard Rex Pflueger made his first career start in place of Jackson, who is out with a pulled right hamstring with Steve Vasturia playing point guard. V.J. Beachem led ND with 22 points on 5-of-8 shooting from beyond the arc, four in the second half, while Vasturia finished with 16 points.

The Irish had missed 13 of 14 on 3s before Mabrey hit from the left side.

Iowa 85, Michigan 69 – Michigan can’t hold on against Iowa

Jimmy Butler had 26 points and 10 assists, and the Chicago Bulls opened their longest road trip of the season with a 114-91 victory over the spiraling Los Angeles Lakers on Thursday night. Pau Gasol had 21 points, 12 rebounds and seven assists while facing Kobe Bryant for the final time at Staples Center and the first time anywhere since the 7-foot Spaniard left the Lakers as a free agent in 2014. Bryant scored 10 points on 4-for-13 shooting after sitting out the previous game for the Lakers, who lost their season-worst eighth straight game to drop to 9-39. Calgary Flames defenseman Dennis Wideman has been suspended indefinitely pending a hearing for checking and knocking down linesman Don Henderson during Wednesday night’s game against Nashville.  Wideman got up after being hit and struck Henderson on the way to the bench. Wideman said he was in pain and was just trying to get off the ice, adding that he couldn’t avoid Henderson. Wideman apologized to Henderson after the incident.

NHL – NHL All-Star rosters shuffled
The National Hockey League’s All-Star break has begun. That means there are no games on ice tonight or Friday before All-Star Weekend begins in Nashville. The competition will take place Sunday with the regular season resuming play Tuesday. The league has announced some roster changes for the All-Star contest. Evgeny Kuznetsov (ehv-GEH’-nee kooz-NEHT’-sahv) replaces Capitals teammate Alex Ovechkin and James Neal of the Predators replaces Jonathan Toews (tayvz) of the Chicago Blackhawks. Islanders center John Taveras will take over for Ovechkin as the Metropolitan Division team captain.  Ovechkin pulled out of All-Star weekend with a lower-body injury, while Toews left Chicago’s game Tuesday with an illness. Both will have to sit out their team’s first game after the break as punishment for missing the midwinter classic.
